The Kim Carnes "Cafe Racers" era began with the first of four Top 10 songs from that album, with three of them going to #1.
My mourning of the death of Karen Carpenter continued as they began releasing recordings from the vault and their success on my chart would continue all the way up to 1990.
ELO were on their way to #1 with a tragically overlooked beauty called "Stranger".

Since Martin Page co-wrote most of the singles from "Café Racers", I was wondering if his other songs such as "We Built This City" and "These Dreams" also did well on your chart? How about his solo hit from 1994 "In The House Of Stone And Light"? Which singles from CR reached #1? I think I screwed up the chart run for "I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is". I waited and waited for it to be released as a single before charting it. By the time I added it as an album cut it didn't fare very well, making a single week appearance at #40.

i didn't have a chart in 77. I wish i did! I do remember one song back then that really stuck with me. It was "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" by Andy Gibb so I would guess that woulda been my number one...maybe for the whole year! LOL Nov 19, 1983 02 01 Telefone - Sheena Easton 05 02 Uptown Girl - Billy Joel 01 03 Suddenly Last Summer - Motels 10 04 Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar 03 05 Islands In The Stream - Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton 07 06 Crumblin' Down - John Cougar Mellencamp 04 07 Can't Shake Loose - Agnetha Faltzkog 08 08 Weapons - Rough Trade 06 09 Modern Love - David Bowie 14 10 PYT - Michael Jackson 19 11 Burning Down The House - Talking Heads 26 12 Twist of Fate - Olivia Newton-John 09 13 All I Need - Toronto 16 14 Don't Forget To Dance - Kinks 18 15 All Night Long - Lionel Richie 21 16 Cum On Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot 12 17 Making Love Out Of Nothing At All - Air Supply 15 18 Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler 11 19 True - Spandau Ballet 24 20 Say Say Say - Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 13 21 Sitting At The Wheel - Moody Blues 23 22 If Anyone Falls - Stevie Nicks 29 23 Dr Hekyl & Mr Jive - Men At Work 27 24 Love Is A Stranger - Eurythmics 36 25 Foolin' - Def Leppard 17 26 King Of Pain - Police 31 27 Take Another Picture - Quarterflash 30 28 Never Say Die - Cliff Richard 34 29 Big Log - Robert Plant 45 30 Church Of The Poison Mind - Culture Club "Even though "Total Eclipse of The Heart" was on it's way down it was only after spending almost 3 months at the top of the chart and almost 6 months total at this point, it would eventually fall off right before the end of the year. To this day, one of my favorite songs of all time." I am right with you there. It was my number one song of the year. And I just did my All Time 1111 (that is another thread) and it was #3!

I am right with you there. It was my number one song of the year. When I tabulated my year end chart in 1983, I had Bonnie Tyler at #1. It wasn't until 20 years later when I was transferring all my charts to my computer that I caught a math error. The correct points total put TEOTH at #2 behind The Pretenders.

My inspiration for starting a chart of my own in 1978 was having direct participation in tabulating the monthly music chart for our grade school paper. Some charts were shorter than others, but I think it was because the teacher had to trim it to make it fit. After helping the older kids a few times, I decided to do my own chart starting over Christmas break 1977. This chart was the first survey for the 1977-78 school year so there were no previous positions listed. OCTOBER 1977 1. KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND - Keep It Coming Love 2. Star Wars Theme(I do not know if this is John Williams or Meco, the list only has the movie title) 3. RAM JAM - Black Betty 4. PAUL NICHOLAS - Heaven On The 7th Floor 5. STEVE MILLER BAND - Jungle Love 6. LINDA RONSTADT - Blue Bayou 7. ELO - Telephone Line 8. SHAUN CASSIDY - That's Rock 'N Roll 9. KISS - Christine Sixteen 10. DEBBY BOONE - You Light Up My Life 11. DAVE MASON - We Just Disagree 12. HEATWAVE - Boogie Nights 13. FIREFALL - Just Remember I Love You 14. SEALS & CROFTS - My Fair Share 15. ANDY GIBB - I Just Want To Be Your Everything I was writing album reviews for my school paper in 1978 & 1979. I wish I would have thought about the charting idea as well for my school paper. What method was used to come up with the chart positions? I would bet money that the Star Wars Theme was the Meco version. It was the only version deemed acceptable to the students at my school. I remember that the classical version was viewed as, "What with this classical music stuff?". Of course, I grew to appreciate it years later.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending November 19, 1983 08 12 Joe "Bean" Esposito Lady, Lady, Lady 18 ** Marilyn McCoo Heart Stop Beating In Time 33 25 Carly Simon You Know What To Do 40 31 Dottie West & John Schneider Lover To Lover The Joe Esposito song would reach #11 a couple months later for me. The Flashdance soundtrack was fantastic! I assume you were introduced to the Marilyn McCoo song when she performed it on Solid Gold? Great to see the great Carly Simon song on both of our charts. I love the video for it also. And there's John Schneider again! LOL I wonder if we look back at all of the 80's charts we have posted in this thread if we would find at least one song by JS on your chart and at least one song by Kim Carnes on my chart. It seems like we have been hitting charts where those two artists are always included. :)

11/20/83 1 2 Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar 2 1 Love Is A Stranger - Eurythmics 3 4 How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye - Luther Vandross & Dionne Warwick 5 6 Pilot Error - Stephanie Mills 12 11 I Am What I Am - Gloria Gaynor 14 5 Angel Eyes - Lime 17 18 Invisible hands - Kim Carnes MTV was a huge factor for me during this time. I charted alot of songs early because of it and some exclusively because of it. Interesting that your top two songs are both analogies on what love is. Great to see the Dionne Warwick song in the Top 4 on both of our charts. I don't think they played the Stephanie Mills music video on MTV. It's somewhat of a cheesy video (like many were in the early 80's), but the song is good. Nice to see the club classics by Gloria Gaynor & Lime up there on your chart. For me, the Kim Carnes song had a great dance mix and was the reason for being at #1 on my chart.

This was only my 6th chart and I was still working things out...lol. At this point, only records that I owned charted, which explains why so many songs are from earlier in the year. That was how I charted when I first began charting in 1971: Only records I owned. But I had a number of flip sides charting as I discovered some pretty cool songs on the B side too. And songs would debut at #1 for me back then as well. I could have guessed the Odyssey song would have been huge for you. Great song!

The ballad "I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is" is a nice song indeed. Lots of gems on that album. The songs that reached #1 for me were: "Invisible Hands" "I Pretend" "Hurricane" "You Make My Heart Beat Faster" only reached #10. Although "Hurricane" was the flipside of "I Pretend", it started to be promoted as the follow-up single of "I Pretend" when a 12'' dance remix was released for it. It had already been an LP favorite and in my case, my wish came true true when it was released as a single. I enjoyed both "We Built This City" and "These Dreams", with the Heart song being the biggest (top 5). I was not charting when the Martin Page solo song was released, but I liked it a lot and know it would have been a Top 10 song for me.

I wasn't charting in 1977 either but that song would have been a giant if I had been. Great to see the Agnetha song so high on your chart. It was still barely hanging on my chart this week after being a former #1 song. Interesting to see Rough Trade was still hitting your chart in late 1983. It seemed like their successful run on the national charts had come to an end by then. And wonderful to see the Cliff Richard song on both of our charts. It sadly missed the American Top 40, although the song is as good as his early 80's material that did so well.

This weekend's edition of AT40 is from 11/13/1982.
Since we haven't had a 1989 chart yet, how about we do 11/11/1989 as well? It seems fitting as we approach the end of this decade that we reflect on where we were 20 years ago on our charts.

Wow! What a chart back then...As I type that its chock full of "veteran" acts who hit the charts in the decade before. 18 of them. It doesn't seem like we have alot of acts who have a 10 year hit streak behind them anymore.
".9....6....8...If You Asked Me To - Patti Labelle" what a fine song...for me Patti's version is a very close second behind Celine's version. Both versions hit number one for me.
"37 40 Karen Carpenter If I Had You" what a thrill it was to have a Karen Carpenter release. This would eventually top my chart in 1990. Still one of my faves from the Carpenters. such a loss.

10...20....3...Another Day In Paradise - Phil Collins 23...32....2...Poor Little Girl - George Harrison We talked about this before, but I see Phil Collins was charging into the top ten on both of our charts this week. The “…But Seriously” singles did pretty well on my chart. #05 Another Day In Paradise #01 I Wish It Would Rain Down #02 Do You Remember #01 Something Happened On The Way To Heaven #11 Hang In Long Enough The George Harrison song remains one of my favorites. 49 37 Bring It All Back - Grayson Hugh Nothing against Grayson Hugh, but I think ONJ was robbed of a hit with “Talk It Over”! 13...10....9...Planes - Jefferson Airplane 24 23 Summer Of Love - Jefferson Airplane We almost had all three singles from Jefferson Airplane’s reunion album charting at the same time. “True Love” would debut on my next chart at #40 (11-18-89).

This chart isn't too much different than AT40 at the time. I think all the songs were currently on the Hot 100. Songs #1 and #2 were by two of the biggest acts during the first few years on my chart.
Frida and Scandal were beginning chart runs that would last 6 months for each song despite not reaching #1. IKTSGO would peak at #2 and GTY would reach #3. Patty Smyth & Scandal had one of those songs that suffered on the year end survey by charting during two calendar years. GTY ranked at #5 using 1983 points only. If I included points from 1982, it would have been the #1 song of 1983.

"Pump Up The Jam" was spending it's first of 12 weeks at the top.
I didn't remember "Love Shack" being such a big song on my chart but with a 40-18 jump, I had to check it out. Ended up only peaking at #13 and falling off rather quickly.
"Losing My Mind", the genious pairing of Liza Minelli with the Pet Shop Boys, was on it's way to becoming a #3 smash. The album also spawned many album cuts that charted.
Won't be able to respond to all your charts as I'm going on vacation tomorrow but looking forward to seeing them all when I get back next weekend!

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending November 11, 1989 05 05 Patti LaBelle If You Asked Me To 10 23 Phil Collins Another Day In Paradise 26 26 George Harrison Poor Little Girl I was surprised to find I was the only one who had a number of alternative rock songs in their Top 40, like the Camper Van Beethoven and Lenny Kravitz singles. No one else watched 120 Minutes on MTV? But I was happily surprised to see there were a couple of others with "If You Asked Me To" and your chart with the great "Poor Little Girl" single. It was also a surprise to see three of us have the Phil Collins single at #10 and moving up quickly. Although in my case, it would be a run that would ultimately go to the top of the chart.

Nov 11, 89 48 12 Reach Out For Me - Olivia Newton-John 24 23 Summer Of Love - Jefferson Airplane 17 29 You On My Mind - Swingout Sister 39 31 You Win Again - Bee Gees Wow! What a chart back then...As I type that its chock full of "veteran" acts who hit the charts in the decade before. 18 of them. It doesn't seem like we have alot of acts who have a 10 year hit streak behind them anymore. Cool stat about the number of retro acts charting. As Dave mentioned, three of us had different Jefferson Airplane singles charting about the same time, which really gave an indication of the strength of veteran artists in 1989. Plus, even the newer artists were releasing songs "sounding" very retro, such as the Swing Out Sister song on your chart. That was a massive jump by Olivia on your chart. Unfortunately not heard on too many stations in the states. The excellent Bee Gees tune appeared on your chart two years after the song had originally been released.

Rob's Top 25 -- November 11, 1989 TW LW 2W Wks Song-Artist ** 2 weeks at #1 ** 01 01 02 12 Listen To Your Heart-Roxette 25 20 16 14 We Could Be Together-Debbie Gibson Both of us had the Roxette song at #1 the prior week. Looks it took some time to finally make it to the top of your chart. I find the song very endearing and it remains one of my favorite tunes from the 80's. Although I never charted the Debbie Gibson song, I was surprised to discover the number of people who had it on their chart as it was the 4th single from Electric Youth and never made it to AT40.

"Pump Up The Jam" was spending it's first of 12 weeks at the top. "Losing My Mind", the genious pairing of Liza Minelli with the Pet Shop Boys, was on it's way to becoming a #3 smash. The album also spawned many album cuts that charted. Dance chart central again for you! "Pump Up The Jam " is one of my favorite grooves as well. But I was surprised that "Love's About To Change My Heart" by Donna Summer wasn't on this chart since I was hearing it continuously in the clubs in late 1989. My favorite Pet Shop Boys pairing was with Dusty Springfield, but not "What Have I Done To Deserve This". It was the second time they worked with her and released a beauty called "Nothing Has Been Proved".

I thought I better get my 1982 chart finally out before the weekend was up. I'll reply to the remaining charts tomorrow.
Neil landed his fourth #1 single in two years and it would be his final. Larry Lee's solo venture landed him a Top 10 hit outside of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. He was part of the class of Oct. 15th, 1982 where 5 of the debut songs that week were in my top 10 this week, including two eventual #1's.
Sheena Easton achieved a rarity as two singles released at the same time would be moving up my chart. EMI apparently was trying to promote her from two angles: The pop market and the adult contemporary market.

UU-BRU Radio PlaylistFor Week Ending November 13, 198204 05 Linda Ronstadt Get Closer 16 22 Sheena Easton I Wouldn't Beg For Water 17 21 Charlene & Stevie Wonder Used To Be 19 15 Donna Summer State Of Independence 32 39 Frida I Know There's Something Going On This chart isn't too much different than AT40 at the time. If the national chart would have had Linda Ronstadt's song perform as well as it did on our charts, she may have never moved to a softer sound on her next LP. Since I was never a fan of her "What's New" period, that was a shame. I see one of two Sheena Easton singles on your chart. So did you chart "Machinery" at another time, disliked the song, or never heard the song at the time it was released? I also charted the Charlene song (it was a couple weeks away from debuting). Although it only peaked at #29, it was a nice song and I'm glad someone else enjoyed it back then. Nice to see the Donna Summer song doing well on your chart also. Frida's song definitely had some staying power on the national chart as well. For me, the song would reach #1. But a bigger story on my chart was her LP. It had peaked at #33 on my LP chart the prior month and fell off, simply charting based on the Abba connection. It would re-enter a month later at #28, then move to #11, #4, and then to #1 based on the strength of the single and a really incredible overall LP. The LP would spend 52 weeks on my chart and it remains one of my favorite LPs of the 80's.

Haddaway, "What is love" Two of my favorite songs of the 90's debut on your chart in the Top 10 this week. And what a monster move to #1 for Haddaway. When I hear it today, I immediately think of the head-bobbing on SNL. :)

11/11/89 TW LW 27. ** Kiss, "Forever"??? (seems early for this to dabue but I can't imagine what other song it could be, unless "kiss" is the name of a song, 'kiss' is all I wrote, it climbed to #12 an fell off 1st of dec) 23. 28. Marcia Griffith , "Boogie woogie, electric slide" 19. 26. Rockset, "Listen to your heart" Maybe "Kiss" was the song title instead of the artist? I thought of Tom Jone's version of "Kiss", but that would have been early in 1989. The Marcia Griffith song is a good one that I sadly did not chart but wish I had. Loved your spelling of Roxette! I used to do that quite a bit on some of my earliest charts.
