I see one of two Sheena Easton singles on your chart. So did you chart "Machinery" at another time, disliked the song, or never heard the song at the time it was released? “Machinery” had just fallen off after peaking at #25. IWBFW would stop at #11. A few weeks after this chart, a local station began playing “Wind Beneath My Wings”, incorrectly calling it her next single. I charted it for three weeks (#32) before “pulling” it. (At the time I was trying to chart 45’s only.) Her version charted before Lou Rawls (#10) by a couple months, Gary Morris (#29) by ten months and Bette Midler (#8) by nearly 6 years. Sheena Easton’s version is still my favorite. If the national chart would have had Linda Ronstadt's song perform as well as it did on our charts, she may have never moved to a softer sound on her next LP. Since I was never a fan of her "What's New" period, that was a shame. I agree about Linda Ronstadt! She was a consistent hit maker on my chart. “Simple Dreams” and “Mad Love” are two of my favorite albums. I was so glad when she returned to top 40 radio in 1989. It was too bad her return to top of the charts was short lived. .2....4....6...I'm Never Gonna Say Goodbye - Billy Preston .7....1...13...What's Forever For - Michael Murphy *17...18....5...The Only Way Out - CLiff Richard What a cool surprise to see a relatively unknown Billy Preston song at #2! Did INGSG reach #1? I think the MM song really is an early 80's classic, perfectly combining pop/country & AC. I am glad to see it had been a chart topper for you. I've noticed Cliff Richard appearing on your chart regularly. He continued to release good singles (esp. "Wired For Sound") even though his national top 40 success just a a year or so earlier had cooled off.

Looking back, I bet EMI wished they had released it as a single considering how successful the song ended up being. The emotional delivery of the Michael Murphy song just chokes me up every time I hear it. A classic indeed. The Billy Preston song never made it to the top. It stayed at #2 for a couple of weeks. But like MM, another song with a very emotional delivery. Yes, you could tell I was a big fan of Cliff Richard. Not only solid singles, but his LPs were quite good too. But with all of the success he had on my chart, he will be known as the guy who just could not reach the top. He would peak at #2 with three of his 80's singles. One of those #2 singles ended up being one of my top 10 songs of 1981. So how did it not reach #1 when it charted? Just his luck, he was kept out of #1 spot by the third best record of 1981 after it held onto the top spot for 7 weeks.

It would spend 3 weeks on top. The biggest moves on my Top 50 is shared by two. "We'll Be Together" by Sting and "Faith" by George Michael jumped 11. It was a pretty tight chart week. The song that spent the longest within my Top 40 was "Only In My Dreams". Debbie was sitting on her 18th week at 24. Speaking of Debbie, she and Tiffany were starting their careers at this time. One of the 80's great pop rivalries, I was purely a Debbie's Gibson boy. She would end up with 9 number ones. Tiffany's best "All This Time" in 1989 would peak at #2

Tiffany's best "All This Time" in 1989 would peak at #2 You certainly started it out with a bang! Love the 70's connections with the T-Rex remake and most importantly, the Partridge Family??? They were all over my initial charts 17 years prior to this chart date and to this day I still love those classic songs. What prompted you to chart it in 1987? Did you mean "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany? Although Debbie never had a #1 on my chart while Tiffany did (just once), Debbie still won the rivalry on my charts also with many more charted singles.

To continue where Vic left off with the 70's connections, my #1 song was the live version of a song I adored from 1973. Although I MUCH prefer the original version (from the absolutely fantastic "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" LP), I loved the song enough to chart it even as the 80's live version.
Restless Heart made a hot debut at #27 and it would be the final country single to ever reach #1 on my chart.

Fleetwood Mac made it two in a row from "Tango In The Night" when "Little Lies" followed "Seven Wonders" to #1. The first single, "Big Love", only made it to #17. LL was also the oldest song on my top 40 at the time at 14 weeks.
"Those Memories Of You" was the third and biggest hit from the many years in the making "Trio" project, perhaps my favorite album release of 1987.
Laura Branigan always seemed to be at the losing end of any cover battle on the national chart. Even though she released versions of "How Am I Supposed To Live With You", "Der Kommissar", "The Power Of Love", "I Found Someone" and "Moonlight On Water" with varied success, other acts always seemed to do much better afterwards with the same songs. On my chart, she fared better with a few. For example, Cher was on her way to a #18 peak with "I Found Someone", a song Laura Branigan took to #8 in early 1986. However, Laura Branigan's version of "The Power Of Love" was also on it's way to #8, a song Celine Dion would peak at #3 with a few years later.
Further down at #40 was the return of Dusty Springfield, who would find herself at #1 a few months later with The Pet Shop Boys.

Not only with Fleetwood Mac at #1, but it looks like many songs were mutual top ten or top 20 hits. As for the Tiffany/Debbie Gibson rivalry, they were pretty much even on my chart. Through 1990, each had five top ten hits and a single trip to number one.

I charted the version performed at Princess Diana's funeral, not the studio recording produced by George Martin. I would like to think the original version would also have been a hit on my chart when "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was released. I thought Bourgeious Tagg were going to be big after "Mutual Surrender" in 1986. Too bad they faded away quickly on the national scene. Did IDMAA make it to #1? Were any of their other singles successful on your chart? I think "Something In Your Eyes" would have been a classic had Karen Carpenter been able to record it. Nontheless, Dusty Springfield absolutely made it her own.

I thought that Partridge Family song was in fact re-released!?!? But I think it was in the 90s. Either that or remade.

A month later, I sort of had a top 8. I couldn't decide what should be #5 that week so I opted to go with a four-way tie for #5 hahaha. I thought Bourgeious Tagg were going to be big after "Mutual Surrender" in 1986. Too bad they faded away quickly on the national scene. Did IDMAA make it to #1? Bourgeois Tagg was the opening act. My friends and I thought they sucked! When we discovered the "I Don't Mind" video on MTV shortly after that, we always made fun of it . I will admit, though, that I changed my tune a few years later when Brent went solo. "Dare To Fall In My Love" didn't chart too highly on my PC since it only peaked at #32 nationally, but it did chart :)

I have never had a song take that long to reach the top. Was that an oddity or common on your charts? Interesting that you and I have one country song on our charts this week and they just happen to be impressive debuts. Yet they are completely different songs/artists. Regarding Laura Branigan, in my case, there were not as many songs to compare chart peaks. For example, I really didn't care that much for any version of "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You", "The Power Of Love", or "Moonlight On Water". I just dislike the basic compositions, not the artists performing them. But "I Found Someone" is a song I really liked a lot. Laura peaked at #8, while Cher peaked at #5. So I guess that follows the perception of Laura getting the short end of the stick. But I still enjoy listening to both versions. I like your Top 10 LPs addition. When did you start charting LPs? I had stopped charting LPs earlier in 1987.

It's interesting that the original version of "Candle In The Wind" was never released as a single in the US considering the success of the remakes in the 80's and 90's. Yes, "I Don't Mind At All" reached #1 the following week and stayed there for 3 weeks. Their only other chart appearance was with "Cry Like A Baby", which peaked at #7 in 1988. Of course, Brent Bourgeois would chart with his solo hit in 1990. That peaked at #11. What was your chart history for BT? I have also thought about SIYE being recorded by Karen. If only. I agree that Dusty does do justice to the song. But a Karen Carpenter sung version would have indeed been a classic.

My favorite years where in the 70's and how sad that I really didn't start seriously charting every week until 1980. Your four-way tie for #5 was definitely a clue that you needed to expand! LOL I have never seen BT in concert, but I imagine they wouldn't have been a good attraction for a younger crowd. I think they were more directed towards an older audience. I know that I loved "I Don't Mind At All" because it reminded me of the Beatles.

This weekend's AT40 has been announced. It is 11/22/1980. This was a couple of weeks before John Lennon's death and it will be interesting to see where everyone has his comeback song on their chart in the days before that horrible evening. There has been an ongoing debate on whether "(Just Like) Starting Over" would have been a giant if John Lennon would not have died. Maybe we can help answer that question with our own charts.
How about we also take a look at 10 years later (11/24/1990).

Roy Orbison, Selena, Warren Zevon and Laura Branigan have had posthumous number one songs on my chart, but John Lennon would be the only act to be at number one at the time of his death. JLSO would take over number one after Bruce Springsteen's HH.
I was charting A & B sides together for awhile, but this was the last week Yoko Ono's "Kiss Kiss Kiss" would appear on my chart. "Tight Pair" was not the flip side of the Lipps, Inc single. I think Billboard's Disco chart listed the songs together though.
Ten debuts meant I was cleaning house on the chart. Former number one songs by Johnny Lee and Diana Ross left the chart as well as Barbra Streisand's "Woman In Love" which had been at #6 the week before.
Robbie Dupree and Jermaine Jackson were at the lower end of the chart with their current singles. Both singers had spent tiem at #1 earlier in the year.
Local radio continued to influence my chart as Cleveland OH based Lakeside and Michael Stanley were beginning successful chart runs.

This week would be the beginning of a massive fight for the top 3 positions of my chart. I used to "star" the positions of songs that would be either sustaining or increasing interest to me, just like Billboard would do for increases in airplay/sales. Starting this week and lasting until February 1981, every song that fell from #1 would keep its star. So although the Journey song fell from #1 to #3, it actually sustained or increased my interest from the prior week. The strength of songs in the top 3 positions was remarkable during this period and I would never see this happen again.

I believe it was the piano only mix I enjoyed the best. 39...37...30...Let's Get Serious - Jermaine Jackson ** 30 weeks in an amazing run on a top 40 chart! Is this a record?

"Tight Pair" was not the flip side of the Lipps, Inc single. I think Billboard's Disco chart listed the songs together though. Robbie Dupree and Jermaine Jackson were at the lower end of the chart with their current singles. Both singers had spent tiem at #1 earlier in the year. Very surprised to see the Yoko Ono song being acknowledged. I thought I was the only one who liked the song. I know I have received plenty of abuse over the years! :) Excellent to see all of the rarities on your chart. The Rupert Holmes and Bette Midler songs would be Top 20 on my chart within the next few months. The Lipps Inc tune is good and would have been more popular nationally if disco hadn't "died". Jermaine had two #1's in a row on my chart, but failed to even chart with his most recent single. He would return to the Top 10 with the follow-up, "You Like Me Don't You".

I believe it was the piano only mix I enjoyed the best. 39...37...30...Let's Get Serious - Jermaine Jackson ** 30 weeks in an amazing run on a top 40 chart! Is this a record? I originally heard the non-strings version of "Out Here On My Own" when I began charting the song and discovered the strings version while the non-strings version was still climbing. Because I felt it enhanced the listening experience, I chose that version as the one I would credit. Yes, the 30 week run for the Jermaine Jackson song was indeed a record. The song would fall off the following week, but I never had another song with that kind of chart longevity.

"(Just Like) Starting Over" was #1 for 3 weeks, from December 13-27, replaced by "Love On The Rocks" on January 3, 1981. Your situation is similar to mine. In the weeks prior to John's tragic death, the movement on my chart was as follows: 32, 23, 14, 11, 8 Then after his death: 5, 2, 1 "Love On The Rocks" was one of the biggest hits of all-time on my chart and it spent 3 weeks at #1 before John Lennon knocked it down. "Love On The Rocks" would then return to #1 for 5 more weeks. So I can conclude that although the John Lennon song was a Top 10 smash on my chart, it is doubtful that it would have made it to #1 if the sad event didn't occur. So for the critics who said the song was such a giant as a result of his death, my chart would support that. Possibly yours too? But an opposing opinion would point to Prenatt's chart as he already had the song as a #1 smash prior to JL's death. Unfortunately we only had three charts to analyze and based on those charts, we really could not come to a definite conclusion.
