Whew....finally catching up after vacation! In 1980....it was all about Donna Summer and "The Wanderer"...one of my favorites (and probably one of the most underrated). 2 3 The Wanderer - Donna Summer 5 6 Who Do You Think You're Foolin' - Donna Summer 10 8 Stop Me - Donna Summer 13 14 Runnin' For Cover - Donna Summer 16 17 Cold Love - Donna Summer 20 23 Breakdown - Donna Summer 21 26 Grand Illusion - Donna Summer 22 24 Looking Up - Donna Summer 23 27 Nightlife - Donna Summer Wow! All you're missing is "I Believe In Jesus"! I was just looking over my archives to see if all tracks from any album have ever charted. The best I could find was Whitney Houston's debut album with 9 out of 10 over a two year span. You did it in one week!

All three of her singles from that LP hit my Top 10. She was dealing with the disco backlash, but still managed to produce hits. And speaking of another song that should have been a bigger hit, the Viola Wills disco version of "If You Could Read My Mind" was overlooked except on the disco chart. Sadly, Viola passed away earlier this year. Interesting to see the Blondie song charting a year after it was released. So the burning question that is lingering, what happened to John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over" on your chart? Did it ever make your chart and if so, what was the chart history?

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending November 24, 1990 01 02 Winger Miles Away 02 10 Donny Osmond My Love Is A Fire 40 ** Led Zeppelin Travelling Riverside Blues TOP TEN ALBUMS 10 08 Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin Finally getting around to the 1990 charts. Winger only had two Top 20 songs on AT40. "Miles Away" (your current #1) and "Headed For A Heartbreak" (which was a #1 on my chart a year or so earlier). So looks like we had them represented nicely. Cool to see Donny Osmond way up at #2. After he and his brothers were frequent visitors to my chart in the early 70's, I never imagined he would be able to come back in the 80's like he did. Now he's shooting for #1 on Dancing With The Stars. And another retro connection, this time the single release of the Zeppelin song, 20 or so years after it was recorded. I always thought it was interesting that they released this and "Over The Hills & Far Away", both with promo videos to boot. Can't recall for sure but I thought these releases were to promote the box set. But it looks like you were wise and charted the original 1969 LP instead on your LP chart.

With Donna Summer, I think it was more the fact that she went so far away from her usual frothy disco that people didn't quite know what to do with her. I know the first time I heard "The Wanderer" on the radio, I didn't know it was her. Unfortunately, I was on the "John Lennon is dead, so I'm now a fan" bandwagon. I got the Double Fantasy" album for Christmas that year. "Starting Over" only peeked at #16. Subsequent singles would do better. "Woman" peaked at #6 and "Watching The Wheels" peaked at #10. "If You Could Read My Mind" is still one of my favorite all-time songs spending 12 weeks at #1...knocked out by the first member of the Jackson family to have a #1 song....Latoya (!) with "Night Time Lover". Janet is the only other jackson to hit number 1, she did it twice. Michael only made it as high as #2.

Especially the techno dance material. The Pet Shop Boys disappeared from my chart by the 90's, but after I stopped charting they released one of my favorite songs of the 90's called "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing". Did you chart this one?

Don't feel guilty about the John Lennon reaction because I think many of us were touched to some degree and it showed in our charts. With Viola Wills spending so many weeks at #1, did that prevent all of Donna Summer's songs from going to #1? And shocked to discover Michael Jackson never made it to #1 but Latoya did! Now that's a great chart story!

This weekend's edition of Classic AT40 will be jumping well into December, spotlighting 12/15/1984.
I have included the top 10 of my LP chart for the first time to demonstrate how significant of a month this was for me. My favorite Christmas album of all-time had been the Carpenters' Christmas Portrait and when I discovered Richard was releasing another Christmas album with 70's recordings from the vaults, I was beyond thrilled. Since it included recordings that didn't make it onto the original Christmas Portrait LP, I wondered about the quality. But I was completely blown away when I heard it. The LP debuted at #2 on my LP chart the prior week and immediately earned my "platinum" award. This week would be the start of a 5 week stay at #1. Yes, this Christmas LP was #1 well into January and would rechart into the top 10 every December for the remaining life of my LP chart, which ended in 1987.
In addition, the classic single from the Christmas Portrait LP was recharting on my singles chart this week.

The first thing I noticed when I pulled this chart was the number of former #1 songs holding their position or falling slowly. Former chart toppers by Madonna, Barbra Streisand and Scandal (“Hands Tied”) were still in the top five. John Schneider just fell out of the top ten with a song that had been at #1 seven weeks earlier. The Pointer Sisters and Scandal (“The Warrior”) were both past the 20 week mark as well.
Johnny Lee had his biggest hit on my chart after “Looking For Love” from “Urban Cowboy” (The #1 song of 1980) with YCHAHB.
Earlier in 1984 Jermaine Jackson and Michael Jackson were not eligible to chart on Billboard’s Hot 100 with “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming” because it wasn’t released as a single. Later in the year I was surprised when I found a 45 with TMIND and Jermaine’s duet with Whitney Houston on the flip side. I am not sure where this single was officially released (Canada maybe?), but I remember buying it in Erie, PA at a store that sold a good number of imports.
I was always intrigued by the story printed in Billboard concerning “What About Me”. Apparently Kenny Rogers originally wanted to record the song with Barbra Streisand and Lionel Richie, but there must have been schedule or label conflicts. Kenny Rogers did record a version with Olivia Newton-John and Jeffrey Osbourne, but it was shelved for unknown reasons. Nonetheless, I think the final released version with Kim Carnes and James Ingram turned out just as well.

I like your enthusiasm for one of Karen Carpenter's most endearing songs! Since 1980 I have had an annual Christmas Top 40 chart. The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" is the only song to appear in the top ten every year including 2009. Speaking of Christmas albums, 1984 saw the release of Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton's "Once Upon A Christmas", one of my most favorite collections. The album's first single, "The Greatest Gift Of All" would reach #8. Interestingly, a different single was released in 1985 ("Christmas Without You") which would be a #1 hit on my hcart. Another single appeared in 1987 reaching #22, three years after the album's intial release ("I Believe In Santa Claus"). PS - Please continue to post your top ten albums!

Evelyn King was spending her 2nd of 8 weeks at #1. MTV was alive and well on my chart with songs by Romeo Void, Eurogliders, Bronski Beat and Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
After a very slow start, "Missing You" would eventually go to #1.
In my opinion, these were Donna Summer's dark years...lol. Cats Without Claws and All Systems Go were two of her weakest albums, in my opinion. "Supernatural Love" was just ok. She really didn't come back to me until Another Place and Time which I can listen from beginning to end....yes many, many album cuts from there as well..lol
Had my usual flair for R&B ballads..."Stronger Than Before", "All Behind Us Now" & "Black Butterfly"
I never had an album chart since I usually purchase singles, then eventually get the album if it has 3 or 4 songs that I liked.

Great to see the Streisand love reflected on your charts this week with two singles in the top 10 and a long running #1 LP. Interesting enough, only Barry Manilow's involvement with Jim Steinman produced a top 5 single on my chart while all of the others charted lower, including "Left In The Dark", which had a somewhat disappointing peak of #25. Yet the "Emotion" LP still spent 6 weeks at #2 on my album chart thanks to a number of strong songs that were about to be released and some amazing LP cuts. One LP cut in particular would turn out to be one of my favorite Streisand recordings of all time: "Clear Sailing". Each single from "Emotion" charted higher than the prior: "Left In The Dark" #25 "Make No Mistake" #6 "Emotion" #5 Interesting story about "What About Me". I agree that it turned out great as is, but it does make you wonder what it would have sounded like with the other artists. I recall watching a moving performance by Kenny/Kim/James on Solid Gold back then. Johnny Lee has an exceptional voice and glad to see him up so high on your chart. I was very surprised to see the Jermaine Jackson/Whitney Houston duet. I take it you no longer have the record to verify it is an import? I'm pretty sure it is. And finally, great to see you celebrating Christmas music with the Kenny & Dolly LP. I missed this Christmas special so maybe that's why I never got into the music from it. As you saw, the Carpenters were already dominating my chart so much that anything else probably would have gone unnoticed anyway.

A 30 year run on the Christmas chart is spectacular and no doubt that would have been my situation as well if I had been making such a chart. Up until the 90's, that song was without question my favorite Christmas sngle of all time and I didn't think anyone could touch it. But then from out of nowhere in 1997, a single is released by a country music artist that simply blew me away. "Once Upon A December" by Deana Carter. I don't recall ever hearing a song by Deana Carter before or after this song, nor did I see the film the song was from (Anastasia). Yet the song ranks right up there with one of the finest Christmas recordings of all time.

12/15/84 1 1 Just For The Night - Evelyn King 7 8 Stronger Than Before - Joyce Kennedy 10 19 Homecoming Queen - Julie Brown 28 28 Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat 29 29 Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood Lots of surprise songs on your chart, including the #1 song, which no station in my area played back then. The Joyce Kennedy song was a #5 song for me back in 1981 by Carole Bayer Sager. Definitely see the MTV influence in the Julie Brown song! That was one hilarious video. And speaking of good videos, the Bronski Beat video is also a classic. I was relieved to see someone else have my #1 song on their chart. Only #29, but still nice to see it.

AT40 this weekend focuses again on December, with the 80's playing December 7, 1985 and the 70's airing December 10, 1977.
So in addition to seeing everyone's 80's charts for 12/7/1985, let's also see what you had charting high towards the end of 1977 as well for those who were charting at that time.

Bryan Ferry is spending the 4th of his 5 week run at #1.
The battle of the legendary divas was on as Streisand & Ross were climbing quickly with their latest singles. Streisand would win this time, going all the way to #1 while Ross would reach #4. Both are exceptional songs that I enjoy hearing today.
But Streisand would once again fail to reach #1 with her latest album as "The Broadway Album" would spend 5 weeks at #2. Although it joins "Emotion" and "Guilty" as albums that peaked at #2, she did make it to #1 in the 80's with "Yentl".

Kenny Rogers' "Morning Desire" didn't fare very well nationally, but I think it it one of his most underrated singles. I really enjoyed his George Martin produced album. I was hoping "The Best Of Me" would be his next single, but it did not happen. Fortunately, Olivia Newton-John and David Foster released their version in 1986. (A new cover by Donny & Marie is included on their upcoming album.)
The diva battle on my chart was between Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand. Nine tracks from Houston's debut album would keep her on my chart well into 1986.

The late Eddie Rabbitt certainly knew how to crossover from country to pop to AC during the 80's. He would have turned 68 last month.

The diva battle on my chart was between Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand. Nine tracks from Houston's debut album would keep her on my chart well into 1986. I couldn't agree more with the Kenny Rogers single and also the brilliant work of George Martin. If the country music crossover explosion of the early 80's hadn't fizzled out by 1985, I think the lackluster results for the song (and album) on the pop charts would have been much different. The promo music video for "Morning Desire" was brilliant also and really enhanced the song. And speaking of songs with lots of atmosphere performing better on our charts than the national charts, ONJ's song made it to the top 10 on both of our charts. When you mentioned 9 songs charted from Whitney's album, were you charting B side and album cuts at the time? 33 weeks on top of the LP chart is amazing. Would that place this album as your all-time favorite? Nice to see the non-Hot 100 Amy Grant single reaching your Top 40. It made it to #27 the prior month on my chart.

The late Eddie Rabbitt certainly knew how to crossover from country to pop to AC during the 80's. He would have turned 68 last month. With Whitney's stranglehold on the #1 spot on your LP chart, I'm surprised that Barbra was finally able to unseat her. What pushed "Yentl" to the top of my album chart was a combination of really enjoying the film (and thus, the soundtrack), plus the single "Papa Can You Hear Me?", which spent 5 weeks at #1 on my chart. Marillion had reached my top 10 with "Kayleigh" earlier in the year and that really introduced me to the dark music they were producing for the "Misplaced Childhood" album. That album was an emotional experience and one of the reasons why I also loved dramatic concept albums like "Dark Side Of The Moon" and many Alan Parsons Projects albums. "Lavender" would eventually reach #1 and to this day I remember exactly where I was when I first heard that haunting piano intro. I was fortunate to meet Eddie Rabbitt before he passed away. Not only a gifted singer/songwriter, but one beautiful individual.

Interesting to see the two different Linda Ronstadt singles combined into one chart position. Fantastic to see "I Love You" so high. That song and her "Once Upon A Time" LP was the high point in the disco era for me. I always seemed to give the nod to Meco's version when battling John Williams singles. Looks like you were opposite. The Helen Reddy entry was cool to see. Did the film "Pete's Dragon" influence you to chart the song?

Whew...sorry I'm so late to the party...been one of those weeks... Welcome back and the charts were great! I am also late in posting this weekend's AT40 chart, which is featuring 12/19/1981. ONJ's "Physical" was dominating the national charts. Let's see how it was doing on everyone's personal chart this week.

ELO was in the 3rd week of a 4 week (nonconsecutive) stay at #1. It would be their biggest hit of the 80's. One of the weeks they were knocked down from #1 was with Olivia's giant single "Physical". The one week stay at #1 for Olivia hardly seems impressive when compared to the 10 weeks it logged at #1 on the Billboard chart. Along with ELO, Eddie Rabbitt would be enjoying his biggest hit of the 80's. It was definitely a week for 60's veteran artists with Neil Diamond, Moody Blues, Beach Boys, Barbra Streisand & the Bee Gees all in my Top 13.
The album chart is significant because the album which debuts at #4 would end up being tied with Neil Diamond's "The Jazz Singer" as the biggest album of the 80's. The Abba album would spend 86 weeks on my LP chart and little did I know it would be their swan song.

The End
Music didn't really get good until Nirvana/Green Day came into popularity. Most music from before 1994 sucks rocks.

This weekend's AT40 is the first of what may be multiple year end countdown programs. It is the Top 40 songs of 1986. So for those who produced year end charts, now's your chance to post your Top 40 hits of 1986.
