UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending February 14, 1987 03 01 Bruce Willis & The Pointer Sisters Respect Yourself 11 12 Lionel Richie & Alabama Deep River Woman 13 14 Lionel Richie Ballerina Girl 17 18 Lone Justice Shelter TOP TEN ALBUMS 09 09 Lone Justice Shelter I see Bruce Willis' "Respect Yourself" was a #1 for you. I grew up with the Staple Singers version and could never embrace the remake. I was curious if you were very familiar with the original when you charted this or if the song was somewhat new to you at the time. We were scary similar on our Lionel Richie positions this week. Great to see Lone Justice on your chart also. Was surprised to see the album so high though. Not that it isn't deserving, because it truly is. But based on the moderate success of the single from the LP on your chart, you must have been very familiar with the group's first album and that helped push the follow-up into the Top 10 on the LP chart? The single reached #10 on my chart and the LP made it to #36 on my LP chart. Definitely should have charted the LP higher, but I wasn't as familiar with the group then as I am now.

You two were a lot more in synch with each other than with me...I was very much all over the place.

... February 15, 1987 9 19 Boom Boom - Paul Lekakis 13 16 Falling - Melba Moore Wow, I haven't thought about the "Boom Boom" song in years. There was a lot of controversy at the time surrounding it's release. And I just finished watching a Melba Moore documentary right before seeing your chart. Unfortunately the title of her song on your chart would represent her life in the upcoming years. But it's great she is back performing, looking great, and still has a wonderful sense of humor after all she went through.

Wow, I haven't thought about the "Boom Boom" song in years. There was a lot of controversy at the time surrounding it's release. It's funny that songs like "Boom Boom" and say, George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" would be extremely G rated today. Although I'm sure you could apply that statement about every generation 20 years later. Makes you wonder if today's top 40 will be G rated by the year 2030. You'd think eventually a limit will have to be reached...or maybe not? ??? Since 1987 has always been my all-time favorite year for music, I wish I had made a personal chart back then :'( Instead, I just listened to the weekend chart shows and wrote them down song by song, position by position. I probably have the '87 Countdown USA or Rockin' America listing from that week somewhere, if anyone's interested (although it wouldn't be that much different from AT40).

It's funny that songs like "Boom Boom" and say, George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" would be extremely G rated today. I think many of the sexual barriers in music were broken down in the 70's with songs like the orgasmic "Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer. In the late 80's, much of the controversy corresponded with the identification of the new HIV virus and how the once "anything goes" mentality with sex was being reevaluated. This has certainly loosened up again over time. The biggest difference I see over the years would be in music videos. Remember how innocent those early MTV videos were?

Nothing too exciting. Still compiling my chart the "old" way at this point...only records that I owned. Well, one exciting chart note. LaToya Jackson was coming off the first Jackson #1, the only other Jackson to have a #1 was Janet with "Come Back To Me" in 1990 and "Again" in 1993. Michael never made it to #1, "Rock With You" made it to #2.

But.....since I believe Michael sang on LaToya's song, some MJ fans may beg to differ. One of the things I enjoy about your charts is the number of dance classics that did not necessarily cross over to the pop charts. One of the best examples is the Unlimited Touch song with a hardcore dance groove that would have been a shoe-in for the Top 40 pop chart if released during the disco friendly period of the late 70's. We connected on the wonderful third single from Donna Summer's "Wonderer" LP that made it to the Top 10 on both of our charts. We also connected on another song that barely made it into Billboard's Top 40, but performed better on our charts. That would be "My Mother's Eyes" by Bette Midler. Although the song made it into my Top 20, the song continued to resonate with me over the years and now I consider it one of the most endearing classics of the 80's.

Hello all. I found this thread after someone from another web site mentioned that this thread existed for folks who kept personal charts starting from the 80's. I kept personal charts from mid '77 to late '81. Thought I'd post one for the week being discussed-Feb 28,1981. One notable/unusual fact of this week is that a novelty hit was number one, otherwise the rest of the chart is pretty indicative of the times.

Your #1 song was certainly a surprise. It also brought back some memories of how the Rovers song eluded me for weeks. I followed Billboard closely every week and made a point to listen to as many songs on the Hot 100 chart as possible. But I could not find a station that was playing the Rovers song. I nearly broke down and purchased the single just so I could hear it. But AT40 finally saved me as the song entered the Billboard Top 40 at #39 in April. Nice to see the great Cliff Richard song was a #1 for you. Some serious competition at #1 at the time prevented the song from reaching the top of my chart and it ended up enjoying a three week stay at #2. Also notable on both of our charts is the Queen single that failed to make the national Top 40. Yet it was riding high in the Top 10 on my chart and the second highest debut on your chart. I loved this song more than many of Queen's other singles in the 80's.

This week's edition of classic AT40 spotlights March 9th, 1985. Below is my chart from that week.
This chart is notable because it includes the biggest drop of all time (30 notches). There were a number of songs making big moves upward that General Public ended up suffering for it.

brought back some memories of how the Rovers song eluded me for weeks. Ironically north of the border we could not avoid hearing the song In those days I was initially skeptical of new music released by homegrown artists due to mandatory airplay as required by Canadian Content regulations. However in this case I liked the song a lot because it was very catchy, fun and it became a big hit. Nice to see the great Cliff Richard song was a #1 for you. Some serious competition at #1 at the time prevented the song from reaching the top of my chart and it ended up enjoying a three week stay at #2. The "I'm No Hero album" had some good tunes on it including Dreaming from the previous year. Cliff was a massive star in the UK for many years but never quite had that status in North America and that was the only music of his that I ever owned. I missed mentioning another notable fact. I had a notation on that week's chart stating that Christopher Cross had been on the Top 40 for 52 consecutive weeks, a run that included "Ride Like The Wind", "Sailing" and then ultimately ended one week later with "Never Be The Same's" last week for a total span of 53 weeks.

Cliff Richard's "I'm No Hero" LP spawned another #2 song on my chart with the follow-up to "A Little In Love". I found that most of his albums were solid. Funny you mentioned the Christopher Cross statistic because I noticed "Never Be The Same" had spent a long time on your chart. If they would have released "Say You'll Be Mine" a little sooner, I bet that streak would have continued well into 1981 (assuming you enjoyed that song as well).

This week's 70's rebroadcast of American Top 40 is March 13th, 1971. This should really age me, but I actually made a chart from that time. I wasn't even 10 years old yet, so this was one of the first charts I ever completed. Like many of our early charts, this one consisted only of records my family had purchased. Back then, songs would debut at #1, as we see with this chart.
TW LW .1...---...We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder .2....1....No Love At All - BJ Thomas .3....2....Me And You And A Dog Named Boo - Lobo .4....6....She's A Lady - Tom Jones .5....4....Hey Tonight - CCR .6....5....Have You Ever Seen The Rain - CCR .7....3....Wild World - Cat Stevens .8....9....One Bad Apple - Osmonds .9...13....Temptations Eyes - Grass Roots 10....7....Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted - Partridge Family 11...10....Burning Bridges - Mike Curb Congregation 12...14....I'll Be There - Jackson Five 13...11....Knock Three Times - Dawn 14...12....Cried Like A Baby - Bobby Sherman 15...22....Jam Up And Jelly Tight - Tommy Roe 16...21....Come And Get It - Badfinger 17....8....You Are Always On My Mind - Partridge Family 18...16....I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmunds 19...18....Sugar Sugar - Archies 20...19....Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel 21...25....Ooh Child - Five Stairsteps 22...17....One Day Of Your Life - Andy Williams 23...24....Julie Do Ya Love Me - Bobby Sherman 24...23....My Baby Loves Lovin - White Plains 25...20....Lay A Little Lovin On Me - Robin McNamara 26...26....Daughter Of Darkness - Tom Jones

But don't worry about your age ..i'm not that far behind. Interesting number one by musical genius Stevie Wonder actually doing a cover of somebody else's tune...of all people the Beatles. I understand the debut at the number one position. In those days I would go to the record store when a great new song was released, put down my .99 cents for a 45, and then come home and play the record over and over again till the grooves wore out. Nice to see Lobo's first hit song high on your chart. I enjoyed Lobo's 3 big hits in the early seventies. My favourite was Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend. Also good to see CCR's double sided hit Hey Tonight/Have you ever seen the rain too...both great classics. I could make this post a lot longer..but will shorten it...I also loved the Bad Finger, Dave Edmunds and Mike Curb Congregation tunes. Bring back a lot of great memories from my youth.

I have to admit that my youth produced a number of embarrassing misspellings on my original pencil-written charts. I contemplated typing them as I wrote them in 1971, but decided against it. Let's just say I was VERY happy when a certain group became known as CCR after I destroyed the spelling in their long name! ;) Regarding Stevie Wonder, I wasn't familiar with the Beatles version since that was 5 years prior and I was a baby then. So the song was new and fresh to me. But I must say that after hearing the Beatles version later on, I still thought Stevie's version was better. Glad you recognized the Mike Curb Congregation as being great. It's seems to be forgotten by most everyone nowadays but it is a very good record.

I'm a bit behind on the 80's charts. There was March 12. 1983 last weekend and March 15, 1980 is scheduled for this weekend. So I will post the 1983 chart now and the 1980 chart later.
My March 12, 1983 chart was the final time in my chart history where a log jam of strong songs at the top actually forced songs out of the #1 spot in consecutive weeks even while they were still gaining or holding strength (still bulleted). Although I can't replicate the stars (bullets) with the chart numbers here as I did on my original charts in pencil, the #2 song has a bullet this week as it drops to #2. The #3 song was especially odd because it had dropped from #1 to #3 on the chart the prior week with a bullet and still retained a bullet this week while holding at #3. As it turns out, the #1 song and the #3 song this week were the top two songs for the entire year of 1983.

That album had some other great songs such as the title track and Sirius. I still have it in a bankers box in my basement. I'm getting the urge to bring out my turntable again . I liked Greg Kihn's Jeopardy, a very catchy song and whenever I hear it these days, I automatical remember Weird Al Yankovic's spoof which extended the song's popularity. I see some influence of the British/Aussie invasion type bands that I was in to at the time such as A Flock of Seagulls, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Duran Duran, and Moving Pictures. What about me by by Moving Pictures, still stands up well today. Your number one of the previous week, Billie Jean, is my favourite MJ tune.

I'll post a chart to coincide with this weeks AT40 80's broadcast. I'll use SoundMag's format which is more readable. Nothing monumental happening this particular week...just a lot of good pop songs mixed in with some rock, which was indicative of the year.

To coincide with this week's AT40 70's broadcast, here is a chart from Mar 17, 1978. It's a pretty volatile week with a lot of big leaps. My charts did not list the artist name, only the song title. I'm pretty good at remembering the names, but am stumped by the artist of one minor hit at #27. Might have been an album cut.

Alan Parsons rose to fame when he produced the classic Pink Floyd album "Dark Side Of The Moon". His late 70's LPs such as "I Robot" and work with Al Stewart ("Year Of The Cat") cemented his place in music history. But it was in the 80's where he released what I felt were his greatest singles that struck a nerve with me with all of the elements I so adore in music. A combination of somber topics, melodramatic production, and a hint of classical arrangements were brilliantly crafted into pop singles. It started with "Time", which spent 8 weeks at #1 on my chart. "Who knows if we shall meet again, if ever". Then "Old & Wise" would spend 6 weeks at #1. "To those I left behind, I wanted you to know. You've always shared my deepest thoughts. You follow where I go". These two songs are in the Top 5 of the longest running #1 songs on my chart from 1980 to 1991. APP would perform well on my chart with other singles, including a couple of other #1 songs. But those two monster #1 songs would represent the most touching moments for me in the 80's. And speaking of touching moments, yes, "What About Me" still sounds great today. It had reached #1 on my chart in 1982 and I was glad to see it make another chart run on the national chart 7 years later.

I always liked the single version which you never hear on the radio today. The follow-up single also reached my top 10. Also big jump for Christopher Cross as we now see the beginning of the long streak you mentioned when sharing your 1981 chart. And no doubt headed for #1. Not much airplay in the states for the XTC and Trooper song. In fact, only "Raise A Little Hell" seemed to garner any significant airplay from Trooper. What a shame too because songs like "Janine" are top-notch and as good as anything in the Top 40 in the states. Great to see your 1978 chart, which I will comment on tomorrow.

It hit #1 for 2 weeks in early July 1981 and after falling out of the number 1 position, 7 weeks later went back to number 1 at the end of August. It stayed on for 21 weeks in total. A great song. By the time the Eye In the Sky album was released, I had unfortunately stopped charting. I am sure that the title track would have produced some more #1 weeks.

Your peak positions out-performed the peak positions on the national chart for all of these songs. For the time period our charts overlapped, we were very close as "Games People Play" peaked at #7 on my chart and we shared the #1 peak position for "Time". The chart action for "Time" on your chart was indeed very unusual. Returning to #1 only occurred a handful of times on my chart and there was never more than a two week period that the song was out of the #1 spot before returning. Since those rare instances were some of the biggest songs of all-time on my charts, I can certainly understand just how much "Time" meant to you also.

The drop from #1 to #12 is pretty spectacular itself. I never had a song drop out of the Top 10 from the #1 spot. But glad to see the Foreigner song was #1 because the LP it is from is one of my favorite LPs of the 70's. There were so many great songs being released every week in the 70's that charting must have been quite a challenge. I see the Bee Gees and Larry Evoy were dropping out of the top 10 after only 6 weeks on the chart. Even stranger is that the Bee Gees prior hit ("Stayin Alive") was charting higher this week than their follow-up single. It truly was staying alive! I was a big fan of Edward Bear and it's a shame that the States did not pick up Larry Evoy's solo material as well. Quality stuff. With so many big movers this week I bet the top spot in the upcoming weeks was going to be quite a challenge. Also you managed to have a top 10 that did not have one disco song in it. For 1978, that is pretty amazing. I assume that would change the following week with Yvonne Elliman zooming up the chart. And speaking of disco, it looks like you preferred the John Williams version of "Close Encounters" over the disco version by Meco. And finally, nice rarities by the Canadian bands Trooper and April Wine. I mentioned Trooper on your 1980 chart so I will focus on April Wine. Their first LP in the states was a favorite of mine, which was actually their second LP in Canada called "On Record". To add to the confusion, "On Record" was titled "April Wine" in the states, which was actually the title of the first LP in Canada. In any case, I lost track of them after "You Could Have Been A Lady" and "Bad Side Of The Moon" in 1972 because radio stations in the States wouldn't play their music until the great rocker "Roller" in 1979.

Foreigner was very successful on my charts with a total of 4 #1 singles from both the eponymously titled first album and Double Vision. In fact they hold the distinction of holding the number one position of the very first chart I made back in June '77 with "Feels Like The First Time." I guess I wasn't the biggest disco fan, but in the previous month of February, there was very good representation with the Bee Gees spending 2 weeks at #1 with "Stayin Alive", Chic one week at #1 with "Dance, Dance, Dance" and the heavily Bee Gee influenced Samatha Sang song "Emotion" also hitting number one. And yes Yvonee Elliman rocketed into the Top 10 the next week, eventually peaking at #2. Larry Evoy never reached the same success as a solo artist that he had with Edward Bear, but he had some good solo songs. He's one of those singers that has a very distinctive voice. Edward Bears "Last Song" and "You and Me and Mexico' are still favourites of mine after all these years. April Wine was a staple of the Canadian music scene all through the 70's. Everyone had at least one of their albums. Although one of their songs hit #1 on my chart in '77-"You Won't Dance With Me", my favourite is "Tonight is A Wonderful Night"...another great rocker by the band.

Really a nice trip down memory lane for me - I just wish I had kept my charts as well growing up.
I started doing my own charts and countdown back around 1970 - did it for about 5 years (I think) - actually increased it to a Top 100 at one point.
I agree with the part about songs debuting #1 - that always happened to me as well - you'd hear a song that you REALLY liked - would debut #1, then plummet a few weeks later (after wearing the record out and getting really sick of it - LOL)
Example...."Tonight" by Raspberries - LOVED that record for about 2 weeks, then remember it dropped to around 34 - LOL
Also, does anyone remember "We're On Our Way" by Chris Hodge from Summer of '72? It was a HUGE hit on my charts.
Other HUGE hits that I can remember (off the top of my head) were Badfinger's "Baby Blue" and Moody Blues "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock N Roll Band), as well as Five Man Electrical Band's "Absolutely Right" and Alive and Kicking's "Tighter Tighter", and Three Dog Night's "Family Of Man".

That's too bad that you didn't keep your charts. Didn't you know that 40 years later, there would be folks on the Internet wanting to see them? You mention that you did a countdown..Do you mean that you recorded it? That would have been cool. I liked the song "Absolutely Right" as well, but not quite as much as the Five Man Electrical Bands initial hit, "Signs". It's one of my all time favourites. I still think Alive and Kicking's "Tighter and Tighter" is a great song. Glad you mentioned Three Dog Night. They were my favorite band growing up in the early to mid seventies. I think I bought every album, they ever made. So many good songs in addition to "Family of Man", such as "Eli's Coming", "Liar", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Old Fashioned Love Song", "Never Been To Spain", "Joy to the World', "Black and White"..the list could go on...they were a hit making machine. Brings back a lot of good memories of my late childhood/youth.
