Really a nice trip down memory lane for me - I just wish I had kept my charts as well growing up. I started doing my own charts and countdown back around 1970 - did it for about 5 years (I think) - actually increased it to a Top 100 at one point. I agree with the part about songs debuting #1 - that always happened to me as well - you'd hear a song that you REALLY liked - would debut #1, then plummet a few weeks later (after wearing the record out and getting really sick of it - LOL) Example...."Tonight" by Raspberries - LOVED that record for about 2 weeks, then remember it dropped to around 34 - LOL Also, does anyone remember "We're On Our Way" by Chris Hodge from Summer of '72? It was a HUGE hit on my charts. Other HUGE hits that I can remember (off the top of my head) were Badfinger's "Baby Blue" and Moody Blues "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock N Roll Band), as well as Five Man Electrical Band's "Absolutely Right" and Alive and Kicking's "Tighter Tighter", and Three Dog Night's "Family Of Man". Great to know someone else was charting back then. Oh yes, I remember the great Chris Hodge song. I believe it was on the Beatles' Apple label. Should have been a bigger national hit. "Absolutely Right" was a Top 5 single in my part of the country and I loved it. Although I must admit that I actually purchased the "Signs" 45 but didn't buy their follow-up. My weekly allowance money meant I could only choose a couple of records every week. All of the other songs you mentioned were classics also and still hold up well to this day. That Moody Blues song is a great rocker. One of my favorite groups of all-time.

That was one of the first CD's I purchased after buying my first CD player. A very interesting release with the African/Latin influence. Nice to see the Madonna tune high on your list at #4 after only 3 weeks..most likely a future #1. La Isla Bonita is one of my favourite Madonna tunes. Also good to see a number of other memorable tunes from the dance clubs like Club Nouveau's 'Lean on Me" at #2 and Jodi Watley's "Looking For A New Love" doing well on your chart. Crowded House's great song "Don't Dream Its's Over" is moving up in the top 10..It and Cutting Crew's "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight" are a couple of my favorites of that year. At #36 Duran Duran's, The Skin Trade came off the Notorious album, which although did not match the commercial success of their previous albums, IMO, was their best. I'm very sorry I stopped charting early in the 80's because 1987 was clearly my favourite year of the decade. There seemed to be so much going on. Many artists were at the peaks of their careers and released great songs like U2, Madonna, Whitney, plus a lot of great new surprises like Whitesnake, Crowded House, Europe, Bon Jovi, Cutting Crew and mainstays like MJ and Bruce Springsteen. Hopefully there will be some more AT40 classic re-broadcasts of '87 soon and you can post some more of your '87 charts.

My first CD was a couple years earlier and it was a classical CD. The motivation there was I could finally listen to soft passages without pops and clicks. Regarding my #1, it's the only time Paul Simon hit #1 on my chart (although he was close with a couple other singles). Oh yes, the Madonna song was only one week away from #1. I was already very familiar with this song as I loved it as an album cut after buying the "True Blue" LP the prior year. So when it was finally released, it zoomed to the top in only it's 4th week. It would have been great to see you charting in 1987 with it being your favorite year of the 80's. Some very significant moments in my life occurred in 1987 and looking back at these charts really brings back some special memories.

Sorry I haven't been around too much to play along but I love reading all the comments. Here is my chart for 3/29/87: TW LW Song Artist WKS 7 7 Falling - Melba Moore 13 13 Hold Me - Sheila E 9 21 21 Someone Like You - Sylvester 32 37 Living All Alone - Phyllis Hyman 40 43 I'd Still Say Yes - Klymaxx Great to see both of us having the Sheila E song up there so high. Should have been a bigger hit nationally. An amazing coincidence is that there are 4 artists on your chart this week who have been recently spotlighted in the new TV One network series called Unsung. In fact, the Sylvester program just aired last night and was very good. Hope you are able to see the Unsung program because I think you would really enjoy it.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending March 28, 1987 05 07 Robert Cray Band Smoking Gun 22 23 Simply Red The Right Thing 28 32 Billy Joel & Ray Charles Baby Grand 33 40 Madonna La Isla Bonita 38 ** George Strait Ocean Front Property 40 ** Timbuk 3 Hairstyles And Attitudes It continues to amaze me how all of us have so many different songs represented on all of our charts on a given week in history. It's really a testament of how wide open music was back in the 80's where listeners could be exposed to so many songs on the radio and not have to suffer with the tightened playlists of today. Great to see the Robert Cray song in the Top 10 on both of our charts. Also great to see the Simply Red song on our charts because I recently heard it for the first time in about 20 years and forgot how good it was. "Baby Grand" was a future Top 10 song for me. Somewhat of a slow start on your chart for the new Madonna song that was leaping up my chart in record time. Although George Strait is one of the most popular country acts of the 80's that never appeared in my Top 40, "Ocean Front Property" was the closest he got as it was just bubbling outside the chart. The Timbuk 3 single is quite obscure. Nice to see it made your chart.

AT40 The 70's is playing another 1971 show this weekend, so let's go with a year they never air. Let's focus on March 31, 1979. Although I wasn't charting then (I was working at a record store at night during my high school years), there's a lot of great songs. Based on my record purchases and memory of what I loved at that time, no doubt the Bee Gees "Tragedy" would have been #1 on my chart this week.

2 2 Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart 17 17 No Tell Lover - Chicago 23 22 A Little More Love - Olivia Newton-John Wow only charting records you own. You must have spent a lot money on records if you could make a top 27 each week I did a quick count of my chart out of curiousity and I owned 14 of the songs, mostly from albums, but a few singles too.. so I don't think I had enough to produce a chart of "owned" music. I see the fine Amii Stewart song "Knock On Wood" solidly entrenched in your #2 position. I heard it the other day on the radio and still think it's a great song with that pounding beat. Chicago's "No Tell Lover" was not that big a hit nationally compared to some of their other ballads, but I liked the song a lot and it spent 3 weeks at #1 on my chart in Feb of '79. When ONJ's "A Little More Love" came out, it was a little different, faster paced than her previous hits. It's one of my favourites by her.

Well I had a pleasant surprise. Recently I started looking back at my old charts after many years and found charts up to October '81, but I had thought that I charted until '82. I kept them in small spiral bound booklets that were numbered, but I had a number of unmarked booklets that contained AT40 countdown charts. One of the unnumbered ones I just discovered actually contained my own charts(the last ones I did) and went to mid May '82. So I am not senile...my memory was correct after all and I have one to post coincidental to this weeks AT40 classic 80's countdown. April 3, 1982 TW LW WKS .1....3...12...Sweet Dreams - Air Supply .2....2....9...Key Largo - Bertie Higgins .3....9....5...We Got The Beat - The Go Go's .4....5....5...Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis & The News .5....1....6...Freeze Frame - J. Good of you to choose one of my charting years...so here goes..a chart dated April 1, 1979. April 1, 1979 TW LW WKS .1....4....8...What A Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers (4 wks non-consecutive at #1) .2....3....7...Everytime I Think Of You - The Baby's .5....5....9...Tragedy - Bee Gees .6....6....5...Music Box Dancer - Frank Mills .8....9....8...Wheels of Life - Gino Vanelli 11...23....3...Roller - April Wine 16...25....3...Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart 25...10....7...Every Which Way But Loose - Eddie Rabbitt 32...31...16...A Little More Love - Olivia Newton John 36...37....4...Rasputin - Boney M Oh, the memories! The late 70's will always have a special place in my heart because of high school and actually selling this music at the record store I worked at. We were constantly getting tons of promo LPs and singles that allowed me to listen to EVERYTHING that was in the Hot 100 and beyond. Needless to say, all of the songs from your chart bring back those great times. I see my #1 is your #5. Not bad! I too loved the Doobies song but it wore on me with overexposure at the record store and radio play. Interesting to see it jump back up after being all the way down to #4. I think the Babys tune is vastly underrated as it didn't even crack the top 10 in Billboard. Still holds up well today. One of the elements I have missed on radio the past 20 years is variety, and that is exactly what "Music Box Dancer" was. I heard it a few months ago for the first time in ages and it sounded fresh again. I sold more sheet music to that song than any other song in my years at the store. A close second would be "You Light Up My Life". The Gino Vannelli song somewhat bombed in the States, which is a shame because it is a beautiful song. Hard to believe he performed this on Soul Train in 1979. And speaking of songs I heard recently, "Roller" by April Wine appeared on my Ipod and I was immediately jamming. What a great intro that song has, and what a giant mover on your chart. Looks like a future #1 for you. Also a big jump for "Knock On Wood", which was a song I played A LOT in store. Very well produced remake. I love to see the variety with Eddie Rabbitt in your Top 10 the prior week. His next single would be my favorite song of his of all-time. I agree about the ONJ song. I felt that song completely reinvented her music career. Gone were the country crossovers. At least for 20 years. And finally, Boney M received no airplay in the States. Talk about a shame because outside of "Rivers Of Babylon", radio stations ignored this group here yet they were huge everywhere else. "Daddy Cool" is probably my favorite.

I was in FULL disco mode..lol 1 1 There But For The Grace Of God Go I - Machine 3 3 Souvenirs - Voyage 6 6 I Want Your Love - Chic 17 17 No Tell Lover - Chicago 25 25 Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet - Gonzalez 26 26 Chic Cheer - Chic Disco rules indeed! One of the local radio stations would play exclusively disco music (often times the 12'' versions) all weekend long during this time and your #1 would always be heard. The Voyage song was TOO GOOD to just miss Billboard's Top 40. Love that song. Nice to see the ballads represented with "Don't Cry Out Loud" and "No Tell Lover". These were great records. Besides the Bee Gees song, there are two other songs on your chart that would have been #1 songs on my chart had I been charting in 1979: "I Want Your Love" by Chic and "Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet" by Gonzalez. I purchased both of those LPs to get the 12'' versions of those songs. If I remember correctly, the Gonzalez LP was re-issued to include the disco version. That was happening a lot back then. Looks like you owned the "C'est Chic" Lp also.

April 3, 1982 TW LW WKS That is great news!!! I had planned on including my Top 40 chart for this date in the next day or so. I'll do so and comment on your chart then also. We have some cool similarities to share.

Roller, for lack of better description, is a great ball busting tune that rocketed up the chart and peaked at number 3, being held out of the number 1 spot due to the Doobies who just started their 1st of 4 non consecutive wks at #1 and another Canadian act that would hit #1, Frank Mills. In any case I still like to listen to this great rocking tune these days. Speaking of Music Box Dancer, I loved the song and had not heard it for many years either..but recently got the sheet music for it and I am having my young son play it as part of his daily piano lessons. Gotta take some of his time away from playing Beethoven and the other classics to play something I really want to hear I agree that "Everytime I Think Of You" was underrated..I like the song a lot and think that maybe the band's name held it back from being more successful.

They would play all the songs in your list - I was especially fond of "Souvenirs" by Voyage - they would always play the 12" version of every song. I remember recording the station on 8 TRACK TAPE (Yes I'm dating myself, but there wasn't a lot of choice back then) - I just recently transferred it to my computer in MP3 format - doesn't sound great, but at least you get a gist of what it sounded like back in the day. If I remember correctly, 1979 seemed last the last hurrah for disco - then came the big backlash - I really missed it. Anyone remember Dancer/Dance to Dance by Gino Soccio - LOVED that song then, and still do.

It was another fixture on the All-Disco weekend and you bet they always played the 12'' version. Loved the intro where the pounding disco beat started a couple of measures into the song. My favorite memory was when I was working in a warehouse in 1979 by myself at night and blasting the radio with this song echoing throughout the building. My supervisor (who was an elderly lady!)happened to make a surprise visit and if you recall during the bridge of "Dancer", you hear an erotic moan from a female vocalist. Well, wouldn't you know, that segment came on right as she was walking up to me. She immediately looked towards my radio and gave a look of disgust that I will never forget.

Medley mania as 4 songs on this week's chart show my love for the format.
Abba debuts at #25, which is one of the highest debuts on my charts in the 80's/90's. This song was already getting lots of rotation as an LP cut on my turntable when it was released as a single.
Shout out to my friends up north as Chilliwack & Prism are representing your fine country.
Monster singles dominate this chart as 8 songs have stayed at least 13 weeks on the chart. Including my favorite Sheena Easton single of all-time. My second favorite Kiss song of all-time. And my favorite Hall & Oates single in the 80's.

Another chart with very little movement..lol. Really, my chart is usually not this boring..lol. The featured albums this time around looked to be "Physical" by ONJ and "Something About You" by Angela Bofill.
"Making Love" was #1, a beautiful song from a movie that really made a profound impact on me.
1 3 Making Love - Roberta Flack 2 1 Make A Move On Me - Olivia Newton-John 3 2 We Got The Beat - GoGo's 4 4 I Love Rock N Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 5 5 Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 6 6 Mirror Mirror - Diana Ross 7 7 You Can - Madeline Kane 8 10 Recovery - Olivia Newton-John 9 9 Pac Man Fever - Buckner & Garcia 10 11 Tainted Love - Soft Cell 11 8 Physical - Olivia Newton-John 12 16 Carried Away - Olivia Newton-John 13 15 Take It Easy On Me - Little River Band 14 12 Our Lips Are Sealed - GoGo's 15 14 Private Eyes - Hall & Oats 16 17 One Hundred Ways - Quincy Jones f/James Ingram 17 18 When All Is Said And Done - ABBA 18 19 Love Is Like A Rock - Donnie Iris 19 20 Chariots Of Fire - Vangelis 20 21 Find Another Fool - Quarterflash 21 13 Let The Feeling Flow - Peabo Bryson 22 24 Should I Do It - Pointer Sisters 23 25 You Never Gave Up On Me - Crystal Gayle 24 27 The Lonely One - Madeline Kane 25 28 Holding Out For Love - Angela Bofill 26 22 Falling - Olivia Newton-John 27 23 I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World - Ronnie Milsap 28 26 Love In The First Degree - Alabama 29 29 Shake It Up - Cars 30 31 Break It To Me Gently - Angela Bofill 31 36 Endless Love - Diana Ross 32 30 Centerfold - J Geils Band 33 32 Can't Hold Back - Kano 34 33 Leather And Lace - Don Henley & Stevie Nicks 35 34 Love In The Fast Lane - Dynasty 36 35 Just Once - Quincy Jones f/James Ingram 37 37 Something About You - Angela Bofill 38 39 The Old Songs - Barry Manilow 39 38 I Can't Go For That - Hall & Oats 40 40 The Rain Is Falling - ELO

Here's my chart from April 2, 1982: TW TW TTW .6....7....8...I Believe - Chilliwack 15....9...14...You Could Have Been With Me - Sheena Easton * 22...25....4...Hooked On Tchaikovsky - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 24...31....2...Stars On 45 III - Stars On 45 29...35....2...Since You've Gone - Cars 37...37...19...Hooked On Classics - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra * I see Chilliwack was more successful on your chart at #6 than it was on mine. Although their preceding single went to number 1# on my chart, "I Believe" peaked at #10 for me. The Car's "Since You're Gone" was a great song that does not get any airplay these days. It has the distinction of being #1 on the very last chart I made in May '82. Ahh the medley songs. They were great starting with "The Medley" by Stars On 45 the previous year. Thats a concept that should be used again today...being the critic I am of today's music..maybe we should rehash more of yesterdays great hits into more medley songs I agree with you on the Sheena Easton tune "You Could Have Been With Me", it's one of my favourites by her too.

Those were exciting times, when new girl bands like the Go Go's broke out and of course Joan Jett's classic "I Love Rock And Roll". Quarterflash has to be included too with their 2 very good songs, "Harden My Heart" and "Find Another Fool". Plus the established artists like Olivia Newton John and Diana Ross were doing well. "Make a Move On Me" was very successful on all 3 of our charts posted for the week.

I have one to post coincidental to this weeks AT40 classic 80's countdown. April 3, 1982 TW LW WKS .1....3...12...Sweet Dreams - Air Supply .7...19....4...Chariots of Fire - Vangelis .8...18....4...Make A Move On Me - Olivia Newton John 10...22....5...Edge Of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks 13...10....7...I Believe - Chilliwack 33...21....6...Letting Go - Straight Lines 34...--....1...Carousel - Michael Jackson Nice to see that particular Air Supply song at #1. It had peaked at #5 on my chart and was on it's way down when I heard the LP version. I fell in love with it even more. It's one of those songs that I regret not charting higher because it has ended up being my favorite Air Supply song. Looks like "Chariots Of Fire" was on it's way to #1 on your chart with the dramatic jump into the Top 10. That song took an unsually long time to reach #1 on my chart (11 weeks). In fact, that may be a record because I don't recall any other song taking that long. As you pointed out in another thread, lots of love for the ONJ song. While "Physical" spent one week at #1 on my chart, "Make A Move On Me" spent three weeks at #1. Interesting surge for Stevie Nicks this week after being much less noteworthy the prior 4 weeks. Nice to see that I eclipsed you on a song by a Canadian group! The Chilliwack tune is just so smooth. I was on my way to a late night party back in '82 and the song came on the radio. The nighttime driving with that song coming out of the new car stereo speakers I recently purchased really mellowed me out. Speaking of mellow, the Straight Lines tune is a beauty that few people know about in the States. If I had heard this song back then it would have done very well on my chart. The Michael Jackson song is a real head-scratcher. I thought it wasn't available until 2001. It was reportly left off of the "Thriller" LP in favor of "Human Nature". How did you come to hear it back then?

I guess I'll never know if it would have peaked at #1 although i did/do like the song a lot. It looks like you are the authority on Canadian music in the early 80's as you not only surpassed me on Chilliwack's "I Believe" but also on the Prism tune "Don't Let Him Know" as it never appeared on my charts..lol I had charted previous songs from the band starting in '77 like "Spaceship Superstar", "Armageddon","It's Over","Night to Remember" but their success was on the downswing in the 80's and I never really got into their last release. So now I know..when I need info on early 80's Canadian music...you'll be my reference I had mentioned previously that I only recorded the song names on my chart.(who needs the artist names as we will all be eternally young and remember everything right?) Now that I have been posting charts online I can go through at least 35-37 of the songs without much effort. Not bad for 30 yrs + later. I usually have to look up only a few artist names each time. Carousel was one of those songs that I couldnt really remember so I did some rudimentary searching for '82 and came up with Michael Jackson and it did sound familiar. Anyway as you pointed out it wasn't released till later...so I spent some more time searching and found the actual song. It was actually "On A Carousel" by an obscure band "Glass Moon" that did a remake of the old Hollies tune. It eventually peaked at #14. So I stand corrected.

I don't know if I would call myself an authority on Canadian music. Instead, I'd like to think I am an authority on good music. And there was plenty of that coming from Canada. It really started for me in the early 70's when I became a huge fan of the Poppy Family. "Which Way You Goin' Billy", "That's Where I Went Wrong" and especially "Where Evil Grows" were all superb. I lived relatively close to the border so I guess that also allowed me to tap into the music up North. My first exposure to Prism was their "See Forever Eyes" LP in 1978 and songs like "Flyin" and "You're Like The Wind". They reminded me a lot of Styx. Believe it or not, "Don't Let Him Know " made it onto the Billboard Top 40 singles chart in 1982 where it peaked at #39 and was a #1 album rock hit. I know what you mean about believing we will remember things forever and not document everything. Thankfully I never left out details with my charts but have done so in other areas. Of course, I should have made the connection with the Glass Moon song when I saw "Carousel" since I am familiar with the song. Haven't heard it in probably over a decade now and it peaked at #34 on my chart about a month later than this 1982 chart. I was hoping for a cool story like someone at a Canadian radio station got their hands on an early selection from the upcoming "Thriller" LP and played it a few times. Just to discover later that the song was pulled from the LP. ;)

1 3 Making Love - Roberta Flack 8 10 Recovery - Olivia Newton-John 12 16 Carried Away - Olivia Newton- 23 25 You Never Gave Up On Me - Crystal Gayle 26 22 Falling - Olivia Newton-John 33 32 Can't Hold Back - Kano 40 40 The Rain Is Falling - ELO I saw the "Making Love" film in the theater in 1982 as well and felt it was quite groundbreaking. The Roberta Flack song was delicately haunting and worked very well with the film. The song would eventually peak at #5 on my chart. Very cool to see it at #1 on your chart. The "Physical" LP was a fave of mine also. If I would have charted LP cuts. no doubt "Silvery Rain" would have been a #1 song. Wonderful Crystal Gayle song. Really happy to see it on your chart. Nice to see disco barely hanging on in 1982 with the Kano track. And very happy to see someone else charting the ELO song. It had recently fallen off of my chart after peaking at #11.
