.. It really started for me in the early 70's when I became a huge fan of the Poppy Family. "Which Way You Goin' Billy", "That's Where I Went Wrong" and especially "Where Evil Grows" were all superb. I lived relatively close to the border so I guess that also allowed me to tap into the music up North. The Poppy Family was great.."Where Evil Grows" was an excellent song..that's one 45 that my friends and I wore out the grooves on quickly. I was surprised that it didn't make the top 40 in the States. Where abouts did you live that was close to the border? I forgot to mention on your chart the #2 song, Leroux's single "Nobody Said It Was Easy" a song that would debut for me the following week.. It was a nice refreshing pop song that was very catchy. It's too bad that the band didn't have any success after that.

I think the next show scheduled was 4-14-84 and I have access to that chart on my notebook.
UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending April 14, 1984 01 03 Paul Young Come Back And Stay (only week at #1) 02 02 Rick Springfield Love Somebody 03 04 Nena 99 Luftballons 04 01 Pointer Sisters Automatic 05 06 Phil Collins Against All Odds 06 05 Thompson Twins Hold Me Now 07 09 Culture Club Miss Me Blind 08 ** Cyndi Lauper Time After Time 09 08 Eurythmics Here Comes The Rain Again 10 10 Yes Leave It 11 11 Rick Dibello This Wouldn't Happen To James Bond 12 13 Tracey Ullman They Don't Know 13 16 Eddie Money Club Michelle 14 14 Bonnie Tyler Holding Out For A Hero 15 23 Bryan Adams Heaven 16 17 Shalamar Dancing In The Sheets 17 20 Pretenders Show Me 18 07 Rockwell (w/Michael Jackson) Somebody's Watching Me 19 21 Alan Parsons Project Don't Answer Me 20 24 Daryl Hall & John Oates Adult Education 21 12 Patti Austin It's Gonna Be Special 22 22 Barbra Streisand Papa, Can You Hear Me 23 25 The Go Go's Head Over Heels 24 27 Sandy Stewart The Saddest Victory 25 26 DeBarge Love Me In A Special Way 26 30 Laura Branigan Self Control 27 31 Irene Cara Breakdance 28 36 Deniece Williams Let's Hear It For The Boy 29 29 Kool & The Gang Tonight 30 19 Gloria Gaynor I Am What I Am 31 34 Stevie Nicks Violet And Blue 32 28 Kenny Rogers This Woman 33 33 Dokken Breaking The Chains 34 37 Duran Duran The Reflex 35 35 Scorpions Rock You Like A Hurricane 36 ** Temptations Sail Away 37 ** Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax 38 ** James Ingram There's No Easy Way 39 40 Bon Jovi Runaway 40 ** Rita Coolidge Sugar Don't Bite
TOP TEN ALBUMS
01 01 various artists Footloose (soundtrack) (3rd of 10 weeks at #1) 02 02 various artists Against All Odds (soundtrack) 03 03 Michael Jackson Thriller 04 04 Eurythmics Touch 05 06 Huey Lewis & The News Sports 06 08 various artists Hard To Hold (soundtrack) 07 ** Nena 99 Luftballons 08 ** Cyndi Lauper She's So Unusual 09 ** various artists A Night In Heaven (soundtrack) 10 09 Lionel Richie Can't Slow Down
Nena was one week away from reaching number one in their 20th chart week, a record that stood until 1998.
Even though the movie was panned by critics, the soundtrack to "A Night In Heaven" proved to be much better. Bryan Adams' "Heaven" reached the the top ten on my chart in 1984 and then again in 1985 when it was officially released as a single from "Reckless". Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres' original version of "Obsession" was also included on the soundtrack and would become a national hit for Animotion a year later. Rita Coolidge charted with "Sugar Don't Bite" several months before Sam Harris released it as his debut single.
Another song that would become a bigger hit a year was "Relax". I was charting the 12" import in 1984. I think Gloria Gaynor's song was only available as a 12" single. The remixed singles by Duran Duran and Irene Cara were vast improvements over the album versions.

I think the next show scheduled was 4-14-84 and I have access to that chart on my notebook. UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending April 14, 1984 08 ** Cyndi Lauper Time After Time 10 10 Yes Leave It 11 11 Rick Delbello This Wouldn't Happen To James Bond 22 22 Barbra Streisand Papa, Can You Hear Me 24 27 Sandy Stewart The Saddest Victory 37 ** Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax 40 ** Rita Coolidge Sugar Don't Bite Impressive debut for Cyndi Lauper. We debuted the song on the same week but in far different places on the chart. In fact, your debut eclipsed the peak position on my chart (#13). Nice to see the Yes song in the Top 10 on both of our charts. I just heard it the other day and it still sounds brilliant. Although we have the Barbra Streisand song in much different areas on our charts, still nice to see it included. Sandy Stewart sounds and looks so much like Martha Davis you would think they are sisters. Two tracks I have never heard from your chart: Rick Delbello - Novelty break-in maybe? Rita Coolidge - Sugar Don't Bite - I had no idea she recorded the Sam Harris song before he did. Doesn't seem like a song she would record. I'll have to check it out. Frankie Goes To Hollywood debuted on my chart the following week, so I also charted this very early. But it was available on a 7'' single on Island since I bought it at the time and I believe it was a slightly different mix than the one to come later.

Rick Delbello - Novelty break-in maybe? Rita Coolidge - Sugar Don't Bite - I had no idea she recorded the Sam Harris song before he did. Doesn't seem like a song she would record. I'll have to check it out. I should have corrected the spelling at #11. It should be Rick Dibello not Delbello. He has been involved in several bands in the Erie, PA area over the years. This song had an entertaining video that played on some local TV stations. Rita Coolidge's version of "Sugar Don't Bite" was uptempo, but not as poppy at Sam Harris'. I added this as an album cut because of her success a year earlier with the #1 hit "All Time High". Out of the 40 songs on your chart, 38 made my chart as well (except for Michael Gore and Cliff Richard). The Carpenters track only spent a single week on my survey a few months earlier. It's hard to believe Karen Carpenter would have only turned 60 this year. I was dissapointed "Papa Can You Hear Me" was released as the second single from Yentl. I was anticipating the studio version of "No Matter What Happens" would be next. In fact, it would make an appearance on my chart a few weeks later. That probably explains the low peak for "Papa", despite the strings intro to make the single more radio friendly. :)

That is really amazing you charted 38 of the 40 songs on my chart because I normally stray quite a bit from popular radio. If you wouldn't have told me which two songs they were, I probably would've guessed the Carpenters song was one of them. I'm a bit surprised that they were the Michael Gore and Cliff Richard tunes since I think they were fairly popular on AC stations. I think one of the reasons why the Streisand song was so huge on my chart was due to the very touching segment in the movie "Yentl". Probably one of the heartwrenching performances I have ever seen in a film. Since it has been some time that we have focused on 1991 and since it is a year not covered with Classic AT40, I think that would be a good chart to post next. If you tell me we have 38 out of 40 songs in common on that chart, then I will be speechless! :)

Time for 1991, since it is sadly a year we do not hear on Classic AT40. But it definitely has some spectacular songs.
April 19, 1991:

I recently mentioned that I thought "Chariots Of Fire" might have taken the most number of weeks to reach #1 at 11 weeks. But I was way off. When I grabbed my 1991 to post here I noticed that the Jesus Jones song was only at #8 in it's 9th week on the chart. I knew the song reached #1 on my chart so I looked at the chart history and discovered it reached #1 in it's 13th week. Totally forgot about that. It lost it's star 4 times during that climb. I recall the song was elevated to a new level when I heard a special radio edit that deleted the bridge and allowed the song to transition directly to the final chorus. It made me realize that I loved the song but the bridge was preventing it from being a #1 caliber song.

I know we've moved into 1991 but I love my chart, so here it is..lol. "Give Me Tonight" would be the #1 song of the year and still one of my all time favorites. "The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" was one of those quirky left field hits for me. Really too many others to mentioned...lol
Will post my 1991 chart shortly so I don't fall behind again. :)

I have no idea why LL Cool J debuted at #19. He would peak at #7 three weeks later.
The Triplets returned to the chart five years after winning a contest on MTV and charting with "Translate" in 1986.

It's a certified dance classic today. You've done it again. This week of Unsung spotlighted Stacy Lattisaw and there she is on your chart. Amazing coincidence that you keep hitting the artists on that program. I also charted "Perfect Combination" but just not on this week's chart. Even more amazing is the fact that you also charted "Relax" very early. I guess the three of us could recognize a great song right away and it just took most everyone else a bit longer. The Dominatrix song has a great beat and is easy to dance too, as the kids on American Bandstand used to always say. So it's not that quirky! The title does catch one offguard though. ;)

As I may have mentioned before, I was never a big fan of Whitney (only 2 top 10 songs). But she actually managed to reach #1 with one of those songs and you just happened to have that song in your countdown this week. "All The Man I Need" is the song that did it for me. Yes, I was surprised with the LL Cool J song debuting so high also. Maybe you saw the video, which was pretty good. I wasn't exactly a big rap fan, but "Around The Way Girl" actually did well on my chart. Great to see the Cinderella song on your chart. Speaking of nice videos, that one is a classic, especially for those who like trains.

I think the record company really messed up and originally released "Where Evil Grows" as the B side. By the time they realized radio stations were more interested in the B side, the momentum of their prior hits was gone. The song was already #1 in my area of the country by the time it debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. So the airplay/sales were spread out quite a bit as each area of the country picked up on the song. I lived in Minnesota at that time. LeRoux is a one-hit wonder on my chart, but it certainly is a good one! I agree about Louisiana's LeRoux - that was a great song. I'm curious - did either of you ever chart "New Orleans Ladies"? That was a pretty good song as well - was a minor hit for the group back in the summer/fall of 1978 - it was their first song to chart on Billboard's Hot 100 (if I remember correctly) I enjoy reading all of the personal charts on here - just wish I had kept mine from the early to mid 70s..........sigh

That's one area that is sadly lacking in the personal charts site. I know one person outside of this site who was charting weekly from 1965 - 1975 and he still has his charts. My charting was so inconsistent back then. And then I completely dropped it from 1975 - 1979, which include some of my favorite years in music. Ouch! Because I wasn't charting in 1978, I can't say how (if) I would have charted "New Orleans Ladies". I say "if" because that song was not played very much at all in my area of the country so I would have had limited exposure. But I certainly enjoy hearing the song today. There are a couple of other people on this site who were charting in 1978 so maybe they could give us some feedback on whether the song made their charts.

It's a nice ballad and the chorus rings home..."From Bourbon St. to Esplanade" as we have a street here in town named "The Esplanade". I'm sure it would have done well on my chart if I heard back in '78. You mention that you didn't keep your charts...but I'm sure you must have some recollection of tunes that made it big on your charts..Why don't you share some of those memories?

I would have loved to see your early 70's charts. Wow charts from the 60's and early '70's...I'd really like to see them. The person you know should post some of his charts..and if you have some from the early '70' s that would be fantastic too. Some of my favourite years of music all time are '71, '72 and '74. Although I was quite young, the '60s were historically significant to me..I was big Monkee's fan as a young child along with the Beatles too. Maybe a new thread should be opened up for "1965 to 1979 Personal Charts". Please encourage your friend to post.

I know the biggest challenge for him will be typing them up. By the time the 70's rolled around, his chart sometimes were into the Top 130 songs of the week. That's right, his charts actually went that far down. He photo copied some of them for me and they truly are amazing. And you are right, the 60's were incredible. I only wish Casey would have started AT40 earlier so we could be enjoying those programs on radio as well. But thankfully there are shows that represent my favorite years of 1970, 1971, & 1972.

Tough week on my chart with only one song certified gold and that was barely hanging on at #40. Plus only half of the Top 10 albums reaching platinum status. But that was partially a reflection of the music that was moving out as there were a number of songs on this chart that would eventually be certified gold in the weeks to come. Including all of the songs in the Top 6 this week, with the #7 song just missing out on gold.

4/23/88 19 25 I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue There are a couple of songs on your chart that I am not familiar with that I'll have to check out. But one I am very familiar with is the Kylie Minogue song, which also reached my Top 20. It's rare for an artist who began in the 80's to release a song after year 2000 that I consider their best work, but that's what happened when "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was released in 2001.

But thankfully there are shows that represent my favorite years of 1970, 1971, & 1972. I'm with you on 2 of your favourite 70's years. My favourites in order are 1971, 1972 and 1974. I remember listening to an AT40 classic countdown last September from 1971 and was really enjoying all the great songs like "Maggie May", "Signs", "Uncle Albert", "Superstar", "Do You Know What I Mean", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"..some of my favourite songs of all time. After it was over, I said to myself, that was one heck of a countdown!

I've had a one month hiatus due to the dates of recent Classic AT40 70/80s broadcasts. Good to get back into posting form. Here's one for this weekend's classic 80's broadcast.
It's an extremely volatile week with some big leaps into the top 5. Ambrosia rockets up to #5 with "Biggest Part Of Me" that would become the song of the year and spend 5 weeks at #1, which is the most of any song in my charting years. Looking back at the songs, I see a lot of easy listening, AOR type songs that year. It didn't seem unusual at the time, but now it really seems to stand out.
