Classic AT40 will be airing June 5th, 1982 this weekend. Here is my chart for that week: June 4th, 1982: TW LW TTW .7...11....4...Play The Game Tonight - Kansas 13...13....5...Crimson & Clover - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 31..---....1...Fantasy - Aldo Nova Top 10 LPs: .2..---....1...Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project * Nice to see the underrated Kansas song doing so well on your chart and looking like a possible future #1. This song should have done better nationally. I'm usually not a fan of remakes. I loved Tommy James original version of "Crimson and Clover", but Joan Jett's version was pretty faithful to the original with a nice added rock edge..good tune. A high debut for another good rock tune, one hit wonder Aldo Nova's "Fantasy". It seems to be getting a lot of airplay on oldies stations in my area recently..definitely one to crank up the volume for. On your album chart, a high debut for the Alan Parsons Project album "Eye In The Sky" I anticipate that the title track would debut shortly and dominate your singles chart.

It seems to be getting a lot of airplay on oldies stations in my area recently..definitely one to crank up the volume for. On your album chart, a high debut for the Alan Parsons Project album "Eye In The Sky" I anticipate that the title track would debut shortly and dominate your singles chart. Although the Kansas song fell short of reaching #1 on my chart, it's good to know someone else remembers this one and appreciates it like I do. Kansas only hit #1 once on my chart and that was with "Can't Cry Anymore", which was on one of my recently posted charts from 1987. I have to agree with you that remakes are usually not a good thing and I also love the original version of "Crimson & Clover". But you were spot on by describing the added rock edge as the reason why Joan Jett was able to succeed with her remake. The Aldo Nova song is one of those timeless rock classics that can be played on radio today and it still sounds fresh. Although the "Eye In The Sky" LP was on it's way to #1, the title track was not as successful on my chart as you would think knowing how much I love this group. It would only make it to #6, which of course, is still quite good. But it may have looked like their string of a #1 single from every LP in the 80's was going to be broken. But then came "Old & Wise" as the third single, which really did dominate my singles charts with 6 weeks at #1. The 70's show for AT40 was 6/4/1977 over the weekend and I take it that was a little before you began charting?

Was thinking of posting my first chart (along with my last one), this past weekend but decided to wait for a couple of weeks for my first one. SXM may even play a '77 re-broadcast soon as I think they are overdue for that year, but even if they don't, I'll post it next weekend to coincide with the date.

I can't help but notice that I only have one single in the Top 40 this week that is "certified gold". Although there are some really good songs on here, apparently I was not as enthusiastic about the music of this time as I had been earlier in the decade. .

There were a few landmark events on my chart on 6-19-84. Some were immediately known, some would not be realized for years to come.
Scandal debuted at #23 with "The Warrior". Their single would go on to spend 11 weeks at #1 and spend 36 weeks in the top 40 (both were records at the time). "The Warrior" remains the biggest hit ever on my chart.
With "Time After Time" wrapping up it's run at the top, Cyndi Lauper had her first two chart appearances go to number one, the first act to do so.
Michael Jackson became the first act to simultaneously chart as a solo act, part of a group and with a duet (were both acts were established separately).
Whitney Houston climbed to #31 in her second chart week. She would eventually lead in nearly every record category possible on my chart and has been the most successful artist.

It's interesting that the greatest single of all-time on your chart wasn't the highest debuting song in it's first week. But "State Of Shock" was really promoted heavily when it was first released so I understand why it was one step higher than "The Warrior". I assume in week #2 "The Warrior" bypassed "State Of Shock". And speaking of Michael Jackson, he would achieve that same amazing chart statistic on my chart the following week when "State Of Shock" debuted. But you are one up on me because you have "Thriller" high on your LP chart well after it was released. In fact, "Thriller" had dropped off my Top 40 LP chart a few weeks earlier than this chart date after spending 78 consecutive weeks on my LP chart. Since none of the Michael Jackson connections on your chart are from "Thriller", it is interesting to still see it up so high on the LP chart. The thing we have most in common on our charts is the fact that random country music songs appear almost every week throughout the 80's. Many of these songs were not heard on pop radio at all. While you have Moe & Joe and Dolly Parton, I have Michael Martin Murphy & Sylvia on this week's chart. We do have the Juice Newton song in common, but that did receive some airplay on pop radio.

Although there are some really good songs on here, apparently I was not as enthusiastic about the music of this time as I had been earlier in the decade. . Maybe you explained this before, but what was your criteria for gold status? There really wasn't any set criteria for gold record awards on my chart. It was more of a recognition for an outstanding single that went beyond simple chart accomplishments of peaking high or spending a long number of weeks on the chart. It was a feeling that the song was in an elite class by being an outstanding record. Of course, most of that time that would be reflected in a high peak or chart longevity. But when there are a lot of great songs charting at one time, that competition can drive chart peaks down, so the gold record award was an alternate method to recognize a great song. There were some strong periods in the 70's where more than half of the songs on my chart would have been gold singles. Early 1976 comes to mind.

We haven't done a non-Classic AT40 year in some time, so I thought 1991 would be a good one to choose:
June 21, 1991
TW LW TTW .1....3....7...3 Strange Days - School of Fish .2....2....8...Place In This World - Michael W Smith .3....5....4...It Ain't Over Til It's Over - Lenny Kravitz .4....4....8...Someone To Love - Roger McGuinn .5....6....8...Power Of Love/Love Power - Luther Vandross .6....9....7...Caravan - Inspiral Carpets .7...14....4...Only Time Will Tell - Nelson .8....8....7...When He's Gone - Bee Gees .9....1...11...Moonlight Dancing - Bette Midler * 10...12....5...I'll Be There - Escape Club 11...21....3...Together Forever - Lisette Melendez 12...22....3...Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) - Crystal Waters 13...15....6...This Time Make It Funky - Tracie Spencer 14....7....8...Halo - Depeche Mode 15...19....4...Mea Culpa (Part 2) - Enigma 16...10....8...Ordinary Average Guy - Joe Walsh 17...18....7...Compared To Nothing - Jude Cole 18...13....6...Miss Freelove '69 - Hoodoo Gurus 19...24....3...Kiss Them For Me - Siouxsie & The Banshees 20...30....2...Piece Of My Heart - Tara Kemp 21...11...12...See The Lights - Simple Minds 22...20....6...Fancy - Reba McEntire 23...31....2...There She Goes - La's 24...16...10...Let's Push It - Innocense 25...32....2...Unconditional Love - Susanna Hoffs 26...33....2...Passion - Rhythm Syndicate 27...28....5...Rush Rush - Paula Abdul 28...29....4...A Better Love - Londonbeat 29..---....1...Crazy - Seal 30...17...10...People Are Still Having Sex - LaTour 31..---....1...Shiny Happy People - REM 32..---....1...(Everything I Do) I Do It For You - Bryan Adams 33..---....1...Temptation - Corina 34..---....1...Mother's Eyes - Enuff Z'nuff 35..---....1...Part Of Me Part Of You - Glenn Frey 36...25...18...Right Here Right Now - Jesus Jones * 37...34...14...Innuendo - Queen * 38...26....5...The Other Side Of Summer - Elvis Costello 39...39...21...Mother's Pride - George Michael * 40...27....7...Black White & Blood Red - Bodeans
A lot of great dance songs on this chart. It may be the last era of popular dance music as music was getting ready to change significantly.
One of those great dance records fell out of the #1 spot all the way down to #9. I can't recall a larger drop from the top than this on my 80's/90's charts.
The biggest record on the chart is a very touching song by George Michael. Sadly overlooked, it is one of his finest moments.

This weekends's SXM AT40 classic 70's countdown is from Jun 17, 1978, here's my chart for that week.
Jun 16, 1978
TW LW WKS
.1....1....9...This Time I'm In It For Love - Player (3rd of 3 wks at #1) .2....2...13...Feels So Good - Chuck Mangione .3....3....8...Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb .4....4....6...Deacon Blues - Steely Dan .5....6....5...Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty .6....7....7...Too Much, Too Little, Too Late - Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams .7....8...10...Love Is Like Oxygen - The Sweet .8...13....6...You Belong To Me - Carly Simon .9...14....6...Take A Chance On Me - ABBA 10...11...12...Baby Hold On To Me - Eddie Money 11...21....6...I Was Only Joking - Rod Stewart 12...20....5...Only The Good Die Young - Billy Joel 13...15....6...Heartless - Heart 14...16....5...You're The Love - Seals & Crofts 15...17....9...Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad - Meatloaf 16...18...11...Coming Home - Ian Thomas 17...28....4...Still The Same - Bob Seger 18...29....3...Miss You - Rolling Stones 19...30....5...Because The Night - Patti Smith 20...24....6...Maybe Your Heart - Christopher Ward 21...25....8...It's A Heartache - Bonnie Tyler 22...31....3...Out Of The Blue - The Band 23...22....5...Daylight Katy - Gordon Lightfoot 24....9....6...On Broadway - George Benson 25...27....4...Bluer Than Blue - Michael Johnson 26...23...10...Your The One That I Want - John Travolta & Olivia Newton John 27...12....6...F.M. (No Static At All) - Steely Dan 28...32....5...Every Kind Of People - Robert Palmer 29...34....5...Dance With Me - Peter Brown 30...38....3...Even Now - Barry Manilow 31....5....8...Movin Out - Billy Joel 32...10...10...Disco Inferno - Trammps 33...37....2...Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton 34...26...11...The Closer I Get To You - Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway 35...---...1...The Load Out/Stay - Jackson Brown 36...19....8...Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmy Buffett 37...---...1...I Can't Stand The Rain - Eruption 38...36...12...With A Little Luck - Wings 39...40....2...Let The Song Last Forever - Dan Hill 40...---...1...Follow You, Follow Me - Genesis
There's not much movement near the top this week. Two hit wonder "Player" holds on for a 3rd week at #1 with "This Time I'm In It For Love". It was actually the bigger of their 2 hits as "Baby Come Back" spent 2 weeks at #1. It and Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" at #2, were 2 of the biggest songs of the year. In fact there are a lot of strong hits in the top 10, 5 of which went to #1.
One of my Favourite bands of the 70's, Steely Dan, have 2 hits on the chart, one of which would reach #1, "Deacon Blues".
An oddity, there are a number of songs on their second wind, rising after peaking in previous weeks: "Coming Home", "Love is Like Oxygen", "Baby Hold on to Me", "It's a Heartache" and "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad".

I can't recall a larger drop from the top than this on my 80's/90's charts. What a great diversity of songs on this chart! I will have to make a playlist on my ipod including these songs. I think Bette Midler's "Some People's Lives" album was a great adult pop record with several potential hits besides "From A Distance". Unfortunately I was reluctant to add "Moonlight Dancing". The Pointer Sisters had released a version a few months earlier that I liked better. I know she also had your final number one song with "The Gift Of Love". How well did "From Distance" and "Night And Day" fare?

This is one of the first charts I did all by myself. It's pretty much a slight variation of Billboard's Hot 100 with a heavy AM radio influence. The summer of 1978 would be dominated by the soundtracks to "Grease", "Thank God It's Friday", "FM" and "Eyes Of Laura Mars".
This was Donna Summer's first of 8 consecutive number one singles. No one has come close to this record on my chart set from 1978 through 1980.

This weekends's SXM AT40 classic 70's countdown is from Jun 17, 1978, here's my chart for that week. Jun 16, 1978 TW LW WKS .1....1....9...This Time I'm In It For Love - Player (3rd of 3 wks at #1) 11...21....6...I Was Only Joking - Rod Stewart 16...18...11...Coming Home - Ian Thomas 20...24....6...Maybe Your Heart - Christopher Ward 22...31....3...Out Of The Blue - The Band 23...22....5...Daylight Katy - Gordon Lightfoot 39...40....2...Let The Song Last Forever - Dan Hill There's not much movement near the top this week. Two hit wonder "Player" holds on for a 3rd week at #1 with "This Time I'm In It For Love". It was actually the bigger of their 2 hits as "Baby Come Back" spent 2 weeks at #1. Oh, the memories. I was traveling throughout the midwest a lot around this time and I heard about every one of these songs 100 times on that trip There was no down year in the 70's for music and your chart reaffirms that. I also preferred Player's second single. I take it you didn't like or never heard their third single "Prisoner Of Your Love" towards the end of 1978? It reached the Top 40 in the States and I like it a lot. Too bad they didn't get much exposure after that. They had a song in 1982 that should have returned them to the Top 40 called "If Looks Could Kill". One of the group members ended up becoming a daytime soap star for many years. I think the band got back together in the past couple of years and were touring. Nice to see Rod Stewart make a big jump. That was my favorite of all of his songs from 1973 - 1978. The Band at #22 was probably the biggest surprise. I never heard that on radio back then. Nice to see the Canadian acts represented. Christopher Ward would really hit it big as a songwriter a decade later after he co-wrote "Black Velvet" (Alannah Myles).

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending June 17, 1978 01 07 Donna Summer Last Dance (1st week of 7 at #1) 04 05 Billy Joel Only The Good Die Young 12 13 Heatwave The Groove Line 14 17 Love & Kisses Thank God It’s Friday 34 ** Barbra Streisand Songbird 37 ** Gene Cotton & Kim Carnes You're A Part Of Me 39 ** Mary MacGregor I've Never Been To Me 40 ** Paul Simon Stranded In A Limousine This was Donna Summer's first of 8 consecutive number one singles. No one has come close to this record on my chart set from 1978 through 1980. I thought I would continue with 1978 before moving to 1991 tomorrow. The 8 consecutive singles by Donna Summer is truly amazing. She would have had 19 consecutive Top 10 singles on my chart from "I Feel Love" in 1977 through "She Works Hard For The Money" in 1983, except for one problem: I didn't care that much for "Bad Girls". Ironically her biggest charting single in Billboard. Billy Joel was represented well on both of your 1978 charts with a song that was probably held down on the national charts due to it being banned on many radio stations. I know one of the stations where I was living at the time refused to play it and when that station aired AT40, they would play a different song to fill in the time at that point of the countdown. Based on my projections of what I bought and was obsessed with at this time, "The Grooveline" would have been my #1 song this week. The Love & Kisses song was also a fave at the time and I was in soundtrack heaven as well. I recall how cool it was to get three LPs when buying the "ThanK God It's Friday" soundtrack. Although the third record was really just a 12'' disco single. I was really disappointed that "Songbird" didn't chart higher in Billboard. I loved that song, but people were really in the mood for dancing then! A future #1 for me would be the Gene Cotton/Kim Carnes duet. It was breaking on midwest radio big time during my summer trip in 1978 and it brings back the most memories for me. The final two songs are a surprise. Especially Mary MacGregor performing the Charlene song. She does one heck of a version of the song and it's a shame more stations didn't pick it up.

I only owned Players first album and didn't hear "Prisoner Of Your Love" many times in my area so I guess it never grew on me due to little exposure. "The Band" was a well respected mostly Canadian Band that released what was to be their final album in '78, a 3 album set "The Last Waltz" that got a lot of play an album Rock stations. They were not a singles band, but the ballad "Out Of The Blue" was one of their few. My favourite is their '60s anthem "The Weight". Christopher Ward was on our television sets up here after his performing/recording career on late night shows and was one of the first VJ's on our first music video channel.."Much Music". How I miss the days when music video channels actually played only music videos

Good to also see 2 other great albums of the '70s doing well on your chart by Eric Clapton and Billy Joel. Both memorable recordings.

I promised a few weeks ago that I would post one of my first charts..last week however SXM came though for me with a '78 countdown, so I will go ahead and post a non classic AT40 countdown from this week in 1977, my second chart ever.
Jun 24, 1977
TW LW WKS
.1...14...11...Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft - Klaatu (1st of 1wk at #1) .2....4...10...Lucille - Kenny Rogers .3....3....7...Undercover Angel - Alan O'Day .4...18....7...Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band .5...24....7...Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett .6....5....7...You Won't Dance With Me - April Wine .7...10...11...Sub-Rosa Subway - Klaatu .8....2....9...Heard It In A Love Song - Marshall Tucker Band .9....1...10...Feels Like The First Time - Foreigner 10....7...11...Lonely Boy - Andrew Gold 11....8....4...Da Doo Ron Ron - Shaun Cassidy 12...16....3...Back Together Again - Hall & Oates 13...22....3...Slow Dancin - Addrissi Brothers 14....6...10...Life In The Fast Lane - Eagles 15...20....3...I'm In You - Peter Frampton 16...29....3...I Just Want To Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb 17...17....8...Fly At Night - Chilliwack 18...11...17...Hotel California - Eagles 19...28....3...Ariel - Dean Friedman 20...30....3...Do You Wanna Make Love - Peter McCann 21...13...20...Rich Girl - Hall & Oates 22...12...19...Lido Shuffle - Boz Scaggs 23...15...11...Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder 24...---...2...Looks Like We Made It - Barry Manilow 25....9...12...Couldn't Get It Right - Climax Blues Band 26...27....3...Timeless Love - Burton Cummings 27...21....7...Peace Of Mind - Boston 28...---...3...Slow Down - John Miles 29...26...14...So Into You - Altlanta Rythm Section 30...23...19...I'm Your Boogie Man - KC And The Sunshine Band
The band Klaatu is flying high this week with 2 singles in the top 10 from one of my favourite albums of the '70's, "3:47 EST". "Calling Occupants", a classic, is the 7+ minute epic song from the album, which contains a lot of great tunes. There were some mild rumours that this was the Beatles making an anonymous comeback(although I didn't believe them), especially with the McCartney-esque vocals of "Sub-Rosa Subway", which is a great Alfred Beech history lesson.
A few clarifications are in order. On my very first chart, I estimated the # of weeks on for each song, based on how long I thought that the song had been around before I began charting. So even though this was chart #2, songs have been around for greater than 2 weeks.
I started out with a Top 30, but found this to be very restrictive as I was debuting songs that I had heard for awhile with greater than 1 week such as the 2 debuts this week. After 6 months, I expanded to a top 40 chart and this solved the problem.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending June 22, 1991 03 04 Glenn Frey Part Of You, Part Of Me 14 17 Joe Walsh Ordinary Average Guy 40 ** Bette Midler Moonlight Dancing Three songs we have in common that never made Billboard's Top 40. In fact, two of them never even made the Hot 100! I never heard the Pointer Sisters version of "Moonlight Dancing", but I will have to check it out. Like you, I see many songs on these charts that I will have to put on iPod. It seems like the early 90's is ignored quite a bit on the oldies stations I listen to and I long to hear these songs after reviewing all of our 90's charts.

We haven't seen that very often in our postings. I see just how much you loved Debbie Gibson as she has two songs on your chart. I really wish radio wouldn't have given up on her because she had loads of talent. Nice to see the Simple Minds song on both of our charts. Definitely a song I want to dig up and listen to again after all of these years.

I bit risky for them, but they recognized a great song and I actually love both versions of the song to this day. I also remember all of the Beatles rumors. Another fave of mine is the Chilliwack song. I may have beat your peak on that one if I had been charting back then. I see Shaun Cassidy dropping after only 4 weeks on the chart. I mention this because I hesitantly admit that this would have been the #1 song on my chart if I had been charting back then. Great pop record for the teen crowd, which I was a member of back then.

Chilliwack's "Fly at Night" has been getting airplay recently on a local oldies station...I think I'm in to it more now than back then...a very good song. Don't be hesitant , after a brief drop that week, "Da Do Ron Ron" started rising again and did indeed hit #1 in the weeks ahead.

Some bizarre chart action at the #1 position. Previously "Funky Town" spent 7 weeks in the top 10, peaking at #2 and had been falling, but then it leaped all the way back up to #1. Otherwise a pretty normal week with the chart looking a lot like the top 40 charts of the day.
