This weekend's AT40 classic 80's countdown is from July 19, 1980, heres mine for the week. July 20, 1980 TW LW WKS .1...22...12...Funky Town - Lipps Inc. (1st of 1wk at #1) ..7....1...11...Steal Away - Robbie Dupree 14...15....4...Clones (We're All) - Alice Cooper 24...29....3...Doin' It Right - Powder Blues Band 34...24....4...Answering Machine - Rupert Holmes Some bizarre chart action at the #1 position. Previously "Funky Town" spent 7 weeks in the top 10, peaking at #2 and had been falling, but then it leaped all the way back up to #1. Otherwise a pretty normal week with the chart looking a lot like the top 40 charts of the day. Very strange chart movement with "Funkytown". Do you recall what happened that inspired the monumental jump back up and all the way to #1? Did it suddenly receive an abundance of airplay or maybe you saw a TV performance? Robbie would be pleased to see you had him at #1. I used to speak with him many years ago and told him that with all of the grief he received for supposedly copying "What A Fool Believes", I prefer listening to his song over the so-called "original" any day. Great to see you enjoyed the Alice Cooper song as well. That one peaked all the way at #2 on my chart. Powder Blues Band didn't receive any airplay that I recall in my neck of the woods. Which is odd because the radio stations in the midwest would have loved that one. What are the odds that you and I would have the exact same song at #34 moving down the chart. And a fairly obscure song to boot!

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending July 19, 1980 11 14 Linda Ronstadt I Can't Let Go 18 21 Queen Play The Game 38 38 Diana Ross Upside Down Great to see Linda doing well on your chart also with a song that should have been a bigger hit nationally. Interesting to see how "Play The Game" is on all three of our charts, yet it never made AT40. I noticed a number of early appearances on your chart. Most notably was Diana Ross struggling to hang on at #38. I bet that changed when the airplay suddenly spiked big time (it debuted in AT40 at #10 the following month).

Unexpectedly this weekend's SXM AT40 classic 70's countdown is from July 14, 1979, here's mine for the week. July 15, 1979 TW LW WKS .1....6....8...She Believes In Me - Kenny Rogers (1st of 3wks at #1) .2....3....7...Ring My Bell - Anita Ward .3....5....9...I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick .4...17....4...Bad Girls - Donna Summer .5....7....9...Chuckie's In Love - Rickie Lee Jones .6....8....7...Boogie Wonderland - Earth Wind And Fire .7....1...12...Just When I Needed You Most - Randy Van Warmer .8...13....7...Shine A Little Love - ELO .9...12....4...Makin' It - David Naughton 10...11....6...Heart Of The Night - Poco 11...20....5...Shakedown Cruise - Jay Ferguson 12...14....6...Shadows In The Moonlight - Anne Murray 13...15....7...Dance The Night Away - Van Halen 14....2....9...We Are Family - Sister Sledge 15...16....5...Gold - John Stewart 16...18....5...Days Gone Down - Gerry Rafferty 17...19....6...When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman - Dr. Hook 18...25....4...Mama Can't Buy You Love - Elton John 19...10...11...The Logical Song - Supertramp 20...21....6...I Can't Stand It No More - Peter Frampton 21...22....5...You Can't Change That - Raydio 22...27....4...I Was Made For Lovin You - Kiss 23...30....5...Ain't No Stoppin Us Now - McFadden & Whitehead 24...26....4...Do It Or Die - Atlanta Rhythm Section 25...28....3...Hold On - Triumph 26...36....3...Let's Go - The Cars 27...31....4...Does Your Mother Know - ABBA 28....9....8...Minute By Minute - Doobie Brothers 29...33....4...People Of The Southwind - Kansas 30...35....3...Getting Closer - Wings 31....4....9...You Take My Breath Away - Rex Smith 32...37....2...Nobody - Doucette 33...38....2...Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp 34...40....2...Suspicions - Eddie Rabbitt 35..---....1...Main Event/Fight Barbra Streisand 36..---....1...Lead Me On - Maxine Nightingale 37..---....1...Is She Really Going Out With Him - Joe Jackson 38...24...12...Hot Stuff - Donna Summer 39..---....1...Up On The Roof - James Taylor 40..---....1...Weekend - Wet Willie Amazing to see how different the music scene was just one year earlier. Your chart is another reflection of just how much I miss the 70's. So many classics. But based on my memory of what I was playing in the record store I worked at during this month, "Ring My Bell" would have been at #1 had I been charting then. So it was great to see it knocking on the door on your chart. The only song that somewhat surprised me was the Doucette song. But of course, the airplay in Canada would make sense. My record store received the promotional LP back in 1979 and I fell in love with the LP track called "Father Dear Father". Very touching song. But "Nobody" is really a radio friendly song that probably would have done better nationally if released a year later (away from the disco explosion).

One of my biggest and favourite hits of the summer of '80, spending 10 weeks in the Top 10. Alice Cooper's "Clones' was not widely played so it's great that it made it so high on your chart. I still like the song a lot today.

Kim Carnes has the highest debuting song in the history of my 80's and 90's charts. It was a song I was already very familiar with as an LP cut.

The ballads by Slade and The Scorpions are great. Chris Deburghs "High on Emotion" had big top 40 hit written all over it, but never got very high on the charts. And of course the very good Alan Parsons tune along with the fine Yes song. The number #1 song is a bit off the map for me though, I don't remember hearing it .

I think it would be safe to say that nobody else but me would be familiar with this song. It was released on the grp label, which is mainly known for jazz recordings. But this song did not follow that trend. In fact, I heard it on a pop radio station back then and it was on a regular rotation. My guess is the Program Director thought it was a great song, and needless to say, I completely agreed with him. I had to write the label directly to get a copy of this song.

I don't think I have ever seen a chart quite like it. Especially #1 dropping all the way to #22. But it's filled with a lot of great songs. Nice to see the Todd Rundgren song doing so well. I always thought it should have been a bigger hit nationally. As well as the Paul Davis single, which I played a lot in the record store I worked in to make up for the lack of exposure on the radio. Really tough to predict which song would have been #1 on my chart if I had been charting this week. I was traveling across the upper midwest this very week in 1978 and I heard all of these songs on the many radio stations I tuned into during that trip. But "Bluer Than Blue" and "Mr Blue Sky" were the songs I always looked forward to hearing, so no doubt they would have been fighting for the top spot.

This weekend Classic AT40 The 80's played 7/31/1982. Here's my chart for that week:
July 30, 1982 TW LW TTW .1....2....5...Blue Eyes - Elton John .2....1....8...Hard To Say I'm Sorry - Chicago .3....9....4...Love Is In Control - Donna Summer .4....4....9...Let It Whip - Dazz Band .5....5....7...Your Imagination - Hall & Oates .6....8....6...Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project .7....7....8...Landslide - Olivia Newton-John .8...11....5...Do I Do - Stevie Wonder .9...13....6...Who Can It Be Now - Men At Work 10...15....4...Words - Missing Persons 11....3...12...Finally - TG Sheppard * 12...18....4...Happy Man - Greg Kihn Band 13...14....6...Ring On Her Finger - Lee Greenwood 14...16....4...Early In The Morning - Gap Band 15...21....4...Hot In The City - Billy Idol 16...17....4...I Know What Boys Like - Waitresses 17...22....3...I Ran - A Flock Of Seagulls 18...27....3...Wasted On The Way - Crosby Stills & Nash 19...23....3...Forget Me Nots - Patrice Rushin 20...30....2...Only Time Will Tell - Asia 21...26....4...Out Of Work - Gary US Bonds 22...10...10...Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band 23...24....5...Love Will Turn You Around - Kenny Rogers 24...29....3...Love Plus One - Haircut 100 25...32....2...Jack And Diane - John Cougar 26...28....3...Love Or Let Me Be Lonely - Paul Davis 27...33....2...And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going - Jennifer Holliday 28...31....3...Paperlate - Genesis 29....6....8...What Kind Of Fool Am I - Rick Springfield 30..---....1...Do You Wanna Touch Me - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts 31...34....2...Going To A Go-Go - Rolling Stones 32...35....2...Think I'm In Love - Eddie Money 33..---....1...Let Me Tickle Your Fancy - Jermaine Jackson 34..---....1...Oh Julie - Barry Manilow 35..---....1...Never Been In Love - Randy Meisner 36..---....1...Gloria - Laura Branigan 37...12...11...This Man Is Mine - Heart * 39...32....9...Still They Ride - Journey 39...38...21...Chariots Of Fire - Vangelis * 40...39...18...The Visitors - Abba *
Top 10 LPs: .1....2....2...Donna Summer - Donna Summer ** .2....1...14...Jump Up - Elton John ** .3....3....8...Chicago 16 - Chicago ** .4....4....9...Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project ** .5....5...45...Private Eyes - Hall & Oates ** .6....6...12...12 Greatest Hits - Neil Diamond ** .7....7...42...Physical - Olivia Newton-John ** .8...17....2...Hooked On Classics II - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra * .9...11....4...Mirage - Fleetwood Mac 10...15....4...Daylight Again - Crosby Stills & Nash
Elton John was beginning a 6 week run at #1 with the song that would be my #1 song of 1982. The LP it was from would also be a favorite as it would "jump up" to the #1 spot on the LP chart three different times during its chart run.
A lot of good songs were released in the past month, which created quite a roadblock. Next week's chart would have 7 songs in the Top 20 that all debuted the same week (5 weeks earlier). It also didn't help that all 5 debut songs this week would end up in making my Top 10.

11....3...12...Finally - TG Sheppard * 19...23....3...Forget Me Nots - Patrice Rushin 30..---....1...Do You Wanna Touch Me - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts Did TG Sheppard reach #1? "Finally" peaked at #2 on my chart a couple months earlier. The video for "Forget Me Nots" was played constantly on Showtime between movies. Even though her song wasn't a big hit on my survey (#20), two songs that sampled FMN would reach #1 many years later by Will Smith ("Men In Black") and George Michael ("Fastlove"). Joan Jett was the highest debut on both of our charts this week!

Joan Jett was the highest debut on both of our charts this week! I was no longer charting at the time that you and SoundMag posted for this week..but I do love Joan Jett's remakes of "Crimson and Clover" and the song being discussed "Do You Want To Touch Me". I'm sure it would have been my highest debut too!

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending July 31, 1982 02 02 Donna Summer Love Is In Control 22 29 Steve Miller Band Abracadabra TOP TEN ALBUMS 02 02 Donna Summer Donna Summer Jennifer Holliday and Dolly Parton would each peak at #2 with their current hits. Years later, Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson would take their cover versions of "I Will Always Love You" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" to #1. I know many fans were not happy with Donna Summer's self titled 1982 album, but it is my favorite by her. Not only do we agree with our love for Donna Summer's lead-off single to her self-titled LP, but also how much we enjoyed her LP. It brought her back to the top of my LP chart after being absent from that spot for three years. I was surprised to see Steve Miller moving up your chart with a song that had been out for some time. Was this moving back up your chart again after falling from an earlier chart run? An amazing coincidence about the Jennifer Holliday and Dolly Parton songs performing better with their remakes years later. Now the tough question, which one of the versions do you prefer to listen to today? I've never been very accepting of remakes and I have to admit, I haven't even allowed myself to listen to Jennifer Hudson's version. Jennifer Holliday's performance is almost like a musical spouse to me and hearing anyone else perform it would be like cheating. :)

Joan Jett was the highest debut on both of our charts this week! Yes, "Finally" was a #1 song for me. Great that it charted so high for you too. Should have been a pop top 40 song nationally. "Forget Me Nots" was certainly a catchy little number and I didn't have Showtime back then, so it's interesting to know how heavy the video was promoted. Since MTV may not have played it, Showtime may have been the only outlet for the promo video. Your second highest debut was my third highest, so we were close on that also.

I was surprised to see Steve Miller moving up your chart with a song that had been out for some time. Was this moving back up your chart again after falling from an earlier chart run? SMB were on a rebound. After an early peak at #26, they would reach the top ten. :) Both versions of IWALY by Dolly and Whitney are pretty equal in my book. Holliday beats Hudson hands down! .6....7....5...Best Of The Monkees - Monkees We each had The Monkees compilation in the top ten consisting of songs 20 years old at the time with only three new tracks. I didn't usually chart greatest hits collections, but this was an exception.

This past weekend Classic AT40 replayed the countdown from 8/24/1985. Below is my chart for that week:
August 23, 1985:

Top 10 LPs: .1....1...18...Yesterday Once More - Carpenters ** .2..---....1...Eaten Alive - Diana Ross * .3....2...11...Barking At Airplanes - Kim Carnes ** .4....3....5...The History Mix Vol. I & II - Godley & Creme .5....8...19...Songs From The Big Chair - Tears For Fears .6....4...15...Brother Where You Bound - Supertramp ** .7....7...19...Behind The Sun - Eric Clapton ** .8....5...13...Air Supply - Air Supply ** .9....6...18...Around The World In A Day - Prince ** 10...13...10...Unguarded - Amy Grant
Somewhat of a soft chart as a song like "Loving The Alien" makes a huge leap and appears to be headed for the #1 spot, but it would only reach #4. It was rock classics by Eric Clapton and Don Henley that would have their way with the chart in the weeks to come as they would spend the next three months in the Top 10, including fighting each other for the #1 spot.

........ Nice to see the Todd Rundgren song doing so well. I always thought it should have been a bigger hit nationally. ........ I agree, "Can We Still Be Friends" peaked at #5 for me and was a very underrated song.

The last chart that I posted about about 3 weeks ago from '78 had deleted Cruise at #1 and coincidentally so does this one from the year before '77. Previously, "Whatcha Gonna Do" spent 3 consecutive weeks at #2, held out of the #1 spot by Peter Frampton for that duration, but it finally knocked him out of the #1 spot. Still only doing a Top 30 chart at this time, a Top 40 chart would debut later in the year.

Interesting to see "Best Of My Love" by the Emotions is missing, which was the #1 song in Billboard this week. Also interesting that "Whatcha Gonna Do: would be knocked out the following week, just to return to #1 for one more week. Andy Gibb and the Emotions would spend a couple of months swapping positions at #1 on the Billboard chart. But it would have been the Andy Gibb song preventing anyone else from reaching the top for the month of August if I had been charting that month. Very radio friendly song.

1981 is my favorite year in music from the 1980 - 2010 period.
This week was the only time in the history of my 80's LP chart that the top 11 albums would have a bullet for steady or increasing interest by me. The 11th LP (not shown) was Kim Carnes' "Mistaken Identity", which contained this weeks fastest moving single. My top 4 favorite LP artists just happened to release albums within a few months of each other and it contributed to the log jam.
Steve Winwood would follow two Neil Diamond singles earlier in the year by being rewarded with a rare platinum single. No other year in the past 30 years has had more than 2 platinum singles in a single year and 1981 had 4 (with "Time" by APP joining Diamond & Winwood).

The music from the summer of '77 brings back some great memories. So many powerful singles. Interesting to see "Best Of My Love" by the Emotions is missing, which was the #1 song in Billboard this week. The radio stations in my area north of the border were not playing "Best of My Love" which was typical for many soul songs. My main station was from the US however, so I did end up hearing it and it debuted the next week. Six weeks later it hit #1 on my chart.

If Premiere Radio Networks had waited one more week(Aug 29/81) to select the 80's classic countdown, SoundMagazine would have been pleased. One of the biggest songs of the year "Time" by The Alan Parsons Project, jumped back to the #1 spot for it's 3rd and final week in it's 17th week on the chart. The Moody Blues were debuting with the 2nd of 3 singles from one of the great albums of the year "Long Distance Voyager". The album produced two #1's plus a #2 on my chart.
