Since we are looking at an off week this time..I Was looking through old charts of 1979 and saw that this was a pivotal week in seventies music history. Supposedly the death of disco occurred around this time. Based on many music video shows on both sides of the border, "The Knack" has been mentioned as one the bands to ceremoniously end the disco era. On my chart it knocked off successful disco band "Chic" from the #1 spot. Two other notable disco acts 'Donna Summer" and "Anita Ward' are still descending the chart after good runs. A significant end of an era on the charts.

Two weeks after I posted the Sep 1, 1979 chart, SXM is re-playing the classic 70's AT40 countdown from Sep 15, 1979. Here's my 2 week follow up.

Some memorable tunes that week. Robert John's great ballad "Sad Eyes" maintaning it's hold at the top, which is pretty good for my chart as I did not have many songs with multiple weeks at #1. The Cars knocking on the door at #2, would finally reach #1 and carry their new wave sound/success into the 80's. Herb Alpert and M are climbing quickly with 2 of the big songs of the year. Michael Jackson debuting with the song that would really launch his solo career into the stratosphere well into the 80's and 90's.

27....7....8...Liar Liar - Debbie Harry 30..---....1...Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl I am working on a comprehensive Debbie Harry/Blondie compilation and just listened to this last night for the first time in many years. "Liar, Liar" only made it to #28 on my chart, but the 20 point drop on your chart was similar to a fall from #8 to #34 for Debbie Harry's "Rush Rush" a few years earlier. I never charted "Jump Jump", but I wonder if it would have had a quick burnout as well. How did "Waiting For A Star To Fall" fare on your chart? It's intersting to see it off to a good start considering it was written for Whitney Houston and she never seemed to be as hot on your chart.

It's intersting to see it off to a good start considering it was written for Whitney Houston and she never seemed to be as hot on your chart. Debbie Harry's "Liar Liar" and this chart in general for this week in 1988 was a sign of how I was longing for music from the 60's and 70's. It would have a profound impact on my chart with remakes and songs with a retro feel performing very well on my chart. Just take a look at my #1 song this week and the prior #1 song. Both are remakes of 60's classics. Belinda Carlisle's song would be the record of the year after spending 6 weeks at #1 and add 4 weeks by Phil Collins, you have 10 weeks straight of music originating from the 60's. I wasn't aware "Waiting For A Star To Fall" was written for Whitney. But interesting you mentioned her this week because she is actually on my chart with "One Moment In Time", which would ultimately be the first time she reached my Top 10.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending September 24, 1988 10 ** U2 Desire 19 ** Eddie Money Walk On Water
Two striking elements about your chart this week. The extreme variety of music and the impressive debuts. I'm guessing the U2 debut at #10 was one of the highest debuts on your chart in the 80's?

You two share 4 out of your top 5 songs in common this week. Very rare event.
Also rare is all of us having the same song in the Top 3 in the same week (Upside Down).

Somehow I missed the 1988 thread...and I don't have any charts from 1980. So I'm gonna cheat a little and combine the two. (Besides, this was the first week my chart expanded from a top 5 to a top 20...so I can finally get in the game a little more :) ).

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending October 4, 1980 01 02 Kenny Loggins I'm Alright (1 week at #1) 02 01 Johnny Lee Looking For Love
Kenny Loggins great song would also reach #1 for me a few weeks later....still think it hold's up well today. I am not really a country music fan but Johnny Lee's tune did click with me and was top 3 and I see went all the way to # 1 for you. A very good crossover song.

October 3rd, 1980: TW LW TTW .1....3....5...You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me - Jermaine Jackson (1) .2....2....7...Look What You've Done To Me - Boz Scaggs Your #1 song is a bit off the map again. I don't remember it, but it's definitely worth a second listen after hearing it on YouTube. Great to see Boz's tune doing so well at #2. I was a big Boz Scaggs fans in the late '70s. I remember well a concert I attended in town back in '77 with Boz, Fleetwood Mac and a then unknown band "Journey". We worked our way down to the front row in time for "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle"...ahh the memories!

Jermaine Jackson only reached #1 on my chart twice and both happened in 1980 with "Let's Get Serious" and this follow-up single. So why did these songs strike a cord with me? Stevie Wonder wrote and produced both songs for Jermaine. The songs are so different, but I found each amazing. What's odd is Stevie never made it to #1 on my chart with his own records in the 80's and beyond.

"I'm So Excited" was a #1 song on my chart in 1982 as well. Coincidences between our charts this week: * A non-Billboard Top 10 debuts in our Top 10 ("What About Me"). * Steep drop from #3 for Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" * Big debut for Barbra Streisand's latest LP. Also of note is the Beach Boys/Four Seasons tune, which I purchased back then. I thought it had grazed my Top 40 at the time, but it must have stayed bubbling under the 40 since I could not locate it in my charts. I can't recall if the re-issue of the Pointer Sisters song was a remix.

This weekend's SXM Classic 70's AT40 countdown is from Oct 14, 1978. Here's mine for the week.

A very interesting week with a lot of notables.
Although they never made it to #1, 2 new rock bands rocketed into the top 5. The Cars were well at home with their new wave style when the British Invasion arrived in the early '80s. British band City Boy had one of the very good albums of '78, "Book Early" but disappeared on this side of the pond after that.
The very next week, a notable streak of 4 consecutive #1 songs by Canadian based artists started, all reaching #1 for only 1 week. Nick Gilder started it, then was followed by Anne Murray, Stonebolt and finally Gino Vanelli.
A couple of very big drops out of the top 10 for a former #1 song(2 wks) by Chris Rea and Rick James.
Looking at the artist names on the chart, I noticed one very striking fact..it's a real who's who of '70s music all on one chart..Kenny Loggins, Boston, Foreigner, Steely Dan, Bob Seger, Rolling Stones, Gerry Rafferty, Captain and Tennille, The Who, Hall and Oates, Anne Murray, David Gates, Donna Summer, Paul Davis, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Little River Band, Al Stewart, Donna Summer, Wings and even a brother Gibb...Robin.

This weekend's SXM Classic 70's AT40 countdown is from Oct 14, 1978. Here's mine for the week. October 14, 1978 TW LW WKS 16...26....3...I Will Still Love you - Stonebolt 27...38....3...Took The Last Train - David Gates 34..---....1...Almost Like Being In Love - Michael Johnson The very next week, a notable streak of 4 consecutive #1 songs by Canadian based artists started, all reaching #1 for only 1 week. Nick Gilder started it, then was followed by Anne Murray, Stonebolt and finally Gino Vanelli. Your future Stonebolt #1 is especially notable because the song didn't fare nearly as well on the American charts, but it is a classic. In fact, I think it's one of the best songs on your chart this week. And that's saying a lot because there is not one dud on here. Also of note is the David Gates song, which also should have been a bigger hit nationally. I am also very partial to Michael Johnson, who debuted with a great song on your chart this week. Who finally broke the Canadian hold at #1?

.......... Also of note is the David Gates song, which also should have been a bigger hit nationally. Who finally broke the Canadian hold at #1? The streak was broken by the fine late 70's, early 80's band, Ambrosia. The song "How Much I Feel" was the first of their 2 #1 songs for me. "Took The Last Train" brings back great memories of a trip my Dad and I took to Quebec to see a hockey game in late '78. It was a big hit there...I guess it couldn't miss with the french lyrics .

Here's my chart: October 30th, 1981 TW LW TTW .1....2....5...He's A Liar - Bee Gees (1) .2....3....6...When She Was My Girl - Four Tops 14....7...12...I Could Never Miss You - Lulu * 23...23...12...For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton * Interesting song at #1, it didn't chart for me and and I don't remember hearing it, but certainly a different style for the Bee Gees. Good to see the fine Four Tops song doing well. I see that Lulu's "I Could Never Miss You" did well on your chart as it did on mine..a lot better than it did on the national charts. "For Your Eyes Only" is my favourite of Sheena Easton's tunes and it also did well on my chart spending a couple of weeks at #1 and 10wks in the Top 10.
