Here's my chart: October 30th, 1981 TW LW TTW .1....2....5...He's A Liar - Bee Gees (1) .2....3....6...When She Was My Girl - Four Tops 14....7...12...I Could Never Miss You - Lulu * 23...23...12...For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton * Interesting song at #1, it didn't chart for me and and I don't remember hearing it, but certainly a different style for the Bee Gees. Good to see the fine Four Tops song doing well. I see that Lulu's "I Could Never Miss You" did well on your chart as it did on mine..a lot better than it did on the national charts. "For Your Eyes Only" is my favourite of Sheena Easton's tunes and it also did well on my chart spending a couple of weeks at #1 and 10wks in the Top 10. Great to see the Lulu song do so well on both of our charts. Wonderful song. I also charted her follow-up called "If I Were You". The Bee Gees were suffering from disco backlash and their first release in a couple of years was not played by many stations, so the song suffered on the national charts. Although it wasn't as good as much of their 70's material, I thought it was an intriguing story song.

As you might guess, I loved seeing APP at #2 from the classic "I Robot" LP. Lots of love for deleted Cruise on your chart. Both songs are timeless classics. The CS&N song was a surprise. Did not receive much airplay around my neck of the woods.

I think the APP song is great and it seems to be stuck in my head as of late..a good thing :) Although they didn't last very long, deleted Cruise was in the mold of the California soft rock movement of the '70s along with the Eagles and Player. I certainly enjoyed their music. I owned the CSN album when Dark Star was released as a single. It didn't get much airplay around here, but I did like the song.

But there are some songs that stand out as different from Billbaord. France Joli - The Canadian connection. Moon Martin - Cool song that I played a lot in the record store I worked at in 1979 after we received the promo LP. Led Zeppelin - wasn't eligible to chart in Billboard but received tons of airplay

[....Moon Martin - Cool song that I played a lot in the record store I worked at in 1979 after we received the promo LP...... Agree... Moon Martin had a fine rockin tune and it should have done better nationally. I was lucky that one of our local radio stations had it in heavy rotation, so I heard it frequently.

November 17, 1979 .6...11....11...Pop Muzik - M 17...27....3...Confusion - E.L.O. I was wondering if your #1 song completely dropped off your chart this week, but figured out that it must have been Pop Muzik and was just a typo. Scared me for a second! :) The ELO song was great and should have done much better nationally. In fact, I loved the entire Discovery LP. Glad to see the song performed so well on your chart.

Good catch...M did indeed have the #1 song the previous week. I'll have to be more careful and not type up my charts during Sunday football Just noticed some final appearances for some artists in the top 10 for me. 2 final songs that would eventually reach #2 by KC & The Sunshine Band and Michael Johnson(2wks@#2). Both of these artists had multiple hits appear in the late '70s. 2 one hit wonders, M and France Joli had their 15 minutes of fame with their one and only's.

November 28, 1980 TW LW WKS 15...19....4...Don't Stand So Close To Me - Police 16...20....4...Starting Over - John Lennon Interesting to see the Police song so early on your chart. Were you charting it as an LP cut? I don't believe you were here last year when I inquired about how John Lennon's death in December may have impacted the popularity of "Starting Over". See if you can locate the discussion about this time last year earlier in this thread and let us know where this song was on your chart prior to John's death and where it ultimately peaked afterwards.

It was also a top 10 hit for me too and it should have done better nationally. Interesting to see the nice Chicago ballad do well. I don't believe it hit the top 40, but it's a good song nonetheless.

I wasn't charting "Don't Stand So Close to Me" as an LP cut. It was a single up here just before "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" was released. A lot of the radio stations in Canada were really into the Police and they got a tremendous amount of airplay along with the resulting chart success. I will search for the John Lennon thread and comment on it.

"(Just Like) Starting Over" was #1 for 3 weeks, from December 13-27, replaced by "Love On The Rocks" on January 3, 1981. Your situation is similar to mine. In the weeks prior to John's tragic death, the movement on my chart was as follows: 32, 23, 14, 11, 8 Then after his death: 5, 2, 1 "Love On The Rocks" was one of the biggest hits of all-time on my chart and it spent 3 weeks at #1 before John Lennon knocked it down. "Love On The Rocks" would then return to #1 for 5 more weeks. So I can conclude that although the John Lennon song was a Top 10 smash on my chart, it is doubtful that it would have made it to #1 if the sad event didn't occur. So for the critics who said the song was such a giant as a result of his death, my chart would support that. Possibly yours too? But an opposing opinion would point to Prenatt's chart as he already had the song as a #1 smash prior to JL's death. Unfortunately we only had three charts to analyze and based on those charts, we really could not come to a definite conclusion. Before John Lennon's death, "Starting Over's" chart action was: 39, 26, 20, 16, 9 After 1, 2, 4, 1, 5, 5, 4, 9... So I guess I could say that the song benefited from his tragic death most likely due to the increased airplay. But even before his death, the release of "Double Fantasy" and the first single was much anticipated in the music world and it was a big deal. He was after all an exBeatle and had not released an album for at least 5 years. Although I cannot say for sure, I still think that "Starting Over" would have hit number 1 on my chart if Lennon was alive, but not as quickly. Interesting that for you "Love On The Rocks" was at #1, was knocked out by Lennon and then it went back to #1. A somewhat similar but reverse situation happened with me. "Starting Over" hit #1, Kenny Rogers knocked it out, then "Love On The Rocks" hit #1 but was knocked out the next week by "Starting Over" which went back to #1 for a final week.

The increased airplay was a definite influence for me. I also think there was an emotional connection to the song and it became very sentimental. It demonstrates there is much more to music than just the sound that we embrace. But you're right, the song probably would have hit #1 on the national chart anyway because it is a great song and there was a lot of interest in his return to music after so long. Very interesting to see the reverse happening to you with "Love On The Rocks". But great to know that it was a #1 song for you also. I never hear this song on radio anymore and it is a shame.

This weekend's Premiere Classic 70's AT40 countdown is from Dec 2, 1978. Here's mine for the week. December 3, 1978 TW LW WKS .1....1...10...Double Vision - Foreigner (2nd of 3wks at #1) ..6...16....5...Sweet Life - Paul Davis 22...24....3...What Goes Up - Alan Parsons Project 24...27....3...Please Come Back To Me - The Good Brothers I'm amazed again with how much your charts are in common with Billboard. But there is some notable differences in chart positions. Paul Davis' "Sweet Life" was a #1 song in my region of the country and it looks like it was heading there for you too. That song and the Captain & Tennille's "You Never Done It Like That" were giant records in late 1978 in the areas where they received significant airplay. Very radio friendly songs. Also surprising was the Alan Parsons Project song. A great song from the underrated "Pyramid" LP that didn't even come close to the national top 40. But my fave LP this week was the Foreigner "Double Vision" LP, which was well represented on your chart with the title song at #1. Their first two LPs are incredible. I have never heard of the Good Brothers song. Canadian group?

I found that they had a bigger playlist than the Toronto stations..but I did listen to the local stations too..which proves that I probably spent way too much time listening to the radio in those pre Internet/VCR/DVD/1000 TV channel unverse days....there wasn't much else to do . The Good Brothers were are a local Canadian country band(from the big city, go figure). They had the one cross over pop tune "Please Come Back To Me" which did pretty well. Catchy tune.

January 6, 1978 TW LW WKS .1...13....9...You're In My Heart - Rod Stewart (1wk at #1) .2....4....3...Short People - Randy Newman .8...14....7...Girls School/Mull Of Kintyre - Wings 15...26....4...Tried To Love - Peter Frampton 19....1...16...Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill In your prior week it would have been my guess that "Short People" would have taken the top spot this week. But a surprise jump by Rod Stewart. Interesting to see Dan Hill drop just as he was starting to hit it big in the States. Looks like the song already was in hit in Canada well before the US. Of course, since Dan is from Canada, that makes sense. The Wings double-sided hit is interesting. I used to chart double-sided hits separately because it was hard for me to reconcile placing two songs in one chart position. But I can understand that you were following Billboard. I love both songs, but am partial to Mull Of Kintyre. How about yourself? Great to see the Frampton song doing to well considering it stiffed here in the States.

It was a great time for music for me since a quarter of the songs on the chart were certified gold. Plus many artists had their biggest hits of the 80's on my chart this week.

He was a student at my high school a few years years before I started so as you can imagine there was a lot of buzz in the hallways about his newfound international success. I got a real kick out of hearing our high school's name mentioned by Casey Kasem on an AT40 countdown back then. He told a story about Dan flunking his high school Music class due to his constant adlibbing in the school choir. So I guess all of the really successful people are rebels at heart :) "Mull of Kintyre" is what brought the double sided Wings hit into the top 10. "Girls School" was an ok song, but I only listed them both together because that's how I saw it listed on other charts.

I did not chart the record as it was not played in my area when it was released, but in later years I remember hearing it many times. Nice to see the Beach Boys remake of the '50s classic "Come Go With Me" doing very well on your chart. We've talked in the past about the great appeal of the Medley/Hooked on Classics songs..this one is great. One similarity we share, I see that the Moody Blues "Talking Out Of Turn" has gold status. This was great tune that also did very well for me(as did all of the "Long Distance Voyager" singles). I can't believe that it got nowhere near the Top 40 on the national charts.

This was great tune that also did very well for me(as did all of the "Long Distance Voyager" singles). I can't believe that it got nowhere near the Top 40 on the national charts. Yes, I think it is wonderful to see our similarity with "Talking Out Of Turn". The Moody Blues have always been more of an album act than a singles act. Top 40 DJs were reluctant to play their material on Top 40 radio. So getting a third single from the classic LP LDV into the Top 40 wasn't meant to be. To this day their music from the 60's, 70's and 80's holds up quite well. I was a fan of SCTV back in the day and it was great to see "Take Off" just leaving the #1 spot on your chart. Ironically, the Bob & Doug segments on the program were not my favorite. Maybe that influenced the lower peak of that song on my chart.

Lavender was a great rock ballad that did not get too much airplay but we did have one station in town playing it..a shame that it never hit big in North America. When I think about the winter of '86, the Dream Academy and A-HA songs always seem to stick in my head..if I was charting at the time they would have been at or near the top.
