Which songs were the beginning of the end for artists who once reigned supreme? I'm talking artists who were HUGE and kept putting out hit after hit, seeming unstoppable, but then suddenly, it just took one flop single and they just couldn't seem to recover...
Examples (these are a matter of opinion):
J Lo -- Hold You Down. Paula Abdul -- My Love is For Real Madonna -- American Life
Now keep in mind that I'm not saying these artists aren't still successful. I'm just saying that they went from being insanely popular and relevant to being supported mostly by their fans.
Any other examples?

What ya think about that: Pussycat Dolls(although I hate this part became a hit, and Hush Hush/Jai Ho were mild hits/semi flops, the whole era was tainted by this song). Give it to me: Madonna Bye Bye: Mariah Carey

Give it to me: Madonna Bye Bye: Mariah Carey I dont really understand the poll. I mean Bye Bye was followed up by Obsessed and it was a hit. But anyways, I think Better In Time. Leona hasn't produced a hit nor would radio wanna play her again.

Bye Bye killed the E=MC2 era. That's what we mean by momentum killers. Songs that killed the era and stopped the era from being successful.

Not to be picky here, but Madonna followed up the American Life era with the highest grossing tour of 2004 and then the COADF era. COADF did 8.5 million globally, only a couple albums released since then have matched that. Not to mention "Hung Up" hit #1 in a record 40+ markets and sold over 1 million downloads in the US despite being a pre-Christmas 2005 (when the market exploded for the first time) release and without making the Hot 100 Airplay Top 40. "Sorry" then hit #1 in 29 markets outside the US. Then of course there was the Confessions Tour. "4 Minutes" hit #1 in countless countries and did well in the US, and the album finished as one of highest selling of the year globally on the back of *one* big hit. And we all know how the tour did. I think that's being supported by more than just her die hard fans.

Madonna has had some of the most successful moments of her career since American Life. Sorry, didn't realize that someone else already set you straight

I think that's being supported by more than just her die hard fans. I think he meant American Life the song killing American Life the album era. Coming out of the Music era and a top 10 single with the song from James Bond, I think American Life and its crappy video with the flags in the back killed the American Life era. Even if they had released the original controversial video, the song was not great either. Madonna: don't EVER rap again please and for sure not about pilates and soy latte. Of course she came back huge with Confessions, but the American Life era didn't go well.

I Want To Know What Love is - Mariah Carey Somebody had to say it! Except that song didn't kill much momentum at all. "Obsessed" was like a cast on a broken leg, and "I Want To Know What Love Is" took a steel bat to that leg. Touch My Body/Bye Bye would be better answers for Mariah.

Usher - "Moving Mountains" It was his best single- they just messed up with the timing. The song should've smashed. :'(

"Glitter" Mariah Carey
That was her true momentum killer. TEOM was just a fluke.

"Glitter" Mariah Carey That was her true momentum killer. TEOM was just a fluke. ??? Hmmm... I have to disagree. TEOM spunned 3 really big hits- one being the biggest of the decade. It wasn't just one or 2 minor minor hits. The era was huge. Also, I think Mimi would have experienced a decline either way, Glitter or not, because of: 1. age 2. deteriorating voice 3. lack of classic songs / recurrent airplay, 4. lack of acclaim 5. total irrelivance overseas 6. zero skills as a performer / not a touring draw Those reasosns are why Celine and Madonna are doing so much better than her right now- Madonna has more acclaim, great rep as a performer, and is like a HUGE overseas. Celine is also huge in Europe, and retained her voice, and has a good rep as a perfromer. Mariah's saving grace was American radio / top 40 hits. They seem to have dumped her now- unlike Madge and Celine, she can't go tour in Europe. She's nobody there.

You make all good points but I'm saying if you look at the entire trajectory of her 20 year career you have 10 years of uninterrupted smash successes, #1 hits, 5-10x platinum selling albums. Then from Glitter on, you have a continuous downward motion of singles success and sales, with TEOM being an enormous spike up, after which she continued to her general trend downward. Her spike just happens to have been the biggest song of the decade.
