^ OMG I'm begging you for a second time... please change that avatar Why does it bother you so much? You've never seen a guy shirtless? It's not an innapropriate avatar, and shows nothing but his chest. Get over it, and grow up. If you don't like it, then ignore it!

Oh please I could complain about so many avatars around here, simply because I don't like the artist. Ultimately, it's your choice what to use as an avatar, so stop hating on him!
Anyway I'm still on the fence with this one.

So they're really pushing this single officially now, and dropping FYE?

Moving on, I'm also confused as to what is going on with his songs. FYE was definitely being pushed to radio, but then it wasn't taking off, and WWFM seemed to be liked more by at least some radio stations. So then, it seemed like they were backing off of FYE. But then they made the FYE video and announced that it was the AMAs performance, so I thought that maybe they were sticking with FYE after all. But then they shelved FYE for the rest of the media blitz, the video has gotten no play on MTV or VH1 (which makes me think that they didn't send it there), FYE's spins are dropping---and they gave WWFM an add date. Most confusing launch ever. The video and the AMA performance were probably conceived before the label saw that the single was not taking off on radio. Obviously, whoever chose the first single wanted something that had some shock value, rather than a song that was actually good and radio friendly. Had WWFM been the first single, Adam couldn't have made a "shocking" AMA spectacle. They probably weighed the advantages and disadvantages, and decided to sacrifice radio airplay first.

I think the adds next week will tell us whether this is a hit or just another FYE that fizzles in the 60s.

I cannot even think of another openly gay person worth mentioning for pop in the recent past

Unless this does an instant U-turn and starts plummeting for eternity, I wouldn't get all hopped up over updates just yet, not with the end-of-year chart freeze only a month off and its early effects probably starting to set in soon.

The fact that we can't even name more than a handful of openly gay artists says something about the land opportunity.

The fact that we can't even name more than a handful of openly gay artists says something about the land opportunity. That probably has more to do with the fact that out of all the people in America, more are straight than are gay. So it would stand to reason that the chances of an artist being gay or straight would land on the side of straight. Just simple statistics. Then there's the fact that most artists never get more than one modest hit, meaning they might not have spent enough time in the limelight to even discuss their sexuality. The only reason Adam ever did before he was on the radio is because he came from American Idol. If he was just signed in the normal way, he probably would need a hit before anybody would care whether he was gay or straight. Then people would talk about how he wasn't "out" when his first single was on the radio, even though that's simply because nobody cared enough to ask before then. And the last time was probably 1994--Melissa Etheridge with "Come To My Window" that wound up at around #13 on Top 40. The song was even about a lesbian relationship. The country didn't seem to care because it's an awesome song. Maybe somebody can think of a more recent example.

If there is some sort of politics involved (and that's somewhat of a stretch, since the entertainment industry in the last 15 years has been quite gay friendly), Adam is not the poster boy for changing times. He comes off of the #1 TV show in America, is tremendously pimped by his management company, and has gotten every opportunity handed to him the last year. If Adam was signed in the normal way, without American Idol, then maybe you can discuss how the media is treating him relative to straight artists. Although even that is difficult since prior to American Idol he was making non-mainstream and rather clumsy dance/pseudo-glam rock music that is tough to sell. Hence the reason he probably wasn't signed prior to Idol. I seriously doubt it had to do with his sexuality.

I don't think it's just politics. Society and the media are placing artists these days under much more of a microscope than they did back when Melissa was hitting big (see also below). Maybe it's just me, but this song's title seems almost a perfect response to his AMA controversy. ------- (Although, it can be said that the most shocking thing Melissa did was coming out as lesbian at President Clinton's inauguration. That, plus the fact that she's a woman...it's not that hard to spin her as kind of a "safe, not-so-controversial" gay artist.)

^^ Well, what you said at the bottom is more about what is "safe" and "non-controversial" rather than gay or straight. They could have easily spun Adam into a safe, non-controversial gay artist, but that's obviously not the way they went with it. Think of Will & Grace--safe, non-controversial. America embraced it.
Imagine everything about Adam was the same, including his AMA performance, except he was straight (he did do sexual stuff with the girl dancers, too, after all). And then he said the same thing after, about how male artists can't get away with the same stuff as female artists, etc. Do you really think he would get a reaction that is so dissimilar from the one he got? You can argue about whether a straight male artist would put on a performance like that, but given we live in the age of anything goes in pop music, I wouldn't be shocked if one did. The whole controversy surrounding Adam isn't about whether he's gay or straight; it's about whether he's safe or "unsafe."

^exactly. i think people are putting way too much stock into him being gay. there are other reasons why he is criticized or praised. I think some gay people may want to put him in that light for some kind of pride or something, but i think its off base. he is being judged as an artist who is acting controversially

They played it on OHP a couple of weeks ago. Then it lost the spins because they didn't play it the following week. They're just playing it again.
