A lot of the better songs were added really late in the album making proscess. I think IIHY was one of those late ones.

TFM was a problem because it made this the third single. RCA is also to blame for allowing the hype to overshadow the music in the promo.
Let's see if the video and Oprah can get some excitement back.

street, tfm was a disaster, as it may have also delayed the release of a new single. I do hope WWFM makes it, as this is his third single, and how many others will RCA spend the money releasing if this one also fails to make it on the radio? Had there been no TfM, and had RCA released WWFM or something like it mid-September, BEFORE the cover flap, he wouldn't be on the thin ice he's on right now.

The single associated with the movie didn't cost RCA anything imo.
Although the point about the public in some form being exposed to 3 different songs in rapid succession may be valid. Having created the impression this is his third song with a few.

Someone who covers AI for NPR, and who used to be a mod at TWoP, pointed out that what TFM did was show that the Emperor wasn't wearing any clothes. She said that RCA's main goal with TFM was to increase the hype surrounding Adam, but the song, since it was so different from how Adam was describing himself, showed people that a lot of what they had been hearing and seeing was just hype with very little substance. This is probably one of the reasons why it didn't take RCA long to distance Adam from this song, and why the video was not shown before screening of "This Is It." TFM made people start asking exactly what type of music will Adam release, and exactly how is it different than all of the other music that is currently on the radio.

^ You think they're going to release 6 singles off this cd? I would love it but unless WWFM completely smashes and ofcourse the rest of his singles, I mean beyond Top 10, I don't know if it'll go that far. Seems like only the Bey and Gaga types release that many. Have any of the idols with RCA ever had that many singles even Daughtry who are very successful? Just curious cause right now I see four singles. If I had you Sleepwalker and I love this song even if Mr. Tedder, all my songs sound the same is behind it, surprised me too but its one of my favs. Kelly released 5 singles from Breakaway: Breakaway, SUBG, Behind these hazel eyes, Because of you and Walk away. Carrie also released 5 if you count Inside your heaven that didn't have a video. Thanks and I'm not surprised given the success of that album, I love her, Kelly that is.

I don't think anyone considered TFM his first single, I mean, it was plainly said before it was released, it wasn't, and really, FTE came and went so fast, WWFM is the main song they've heard him singing on shows and stuff , they most likely think of this as the first official release- although truthfully, I kinda wish the album had been more like TFM, it wasn't a bad song and his singing was more showcased than on a lot of the cuts on the album. But the album hasn't been a flop or anything, so there's no blame on anything to go around.

#46 overall on iTunes. Wasn't that the point it reached before it started dropping again the week of Christmas? If so, new peak soon. :)
ETA scratch that, I went back through the thread and it got to #45 before dropping

And the album is up to #105, it was like #130 yesterday. I wonder why the album and the song are rising today.

Everyone that I know thinks that WWFM is Adam's first single. I'm in high school and all my friends just listen to the radio and buy the songs they like, and the only Adam song they hear on the radio is WWFM. They've also seen him perform it on a few shows. Only people that really follow this stuff would think it's his 3rd single. I don't count TFM as a single since it was a soundtrack song and it wasn't for radio.

The general public doesn't care about covers or first or second singles, they just care about what type of music they like. I think TFM made some in the media and radio take a step back and really evaluate their role in the hype that was surrounding Adam, but I don't think the average person even noticed the song, or even knows that it exists.

To 90% of the population, WWFM is his first single. You have to stop and think like a person who doesn't read Pulse and who doesn't follow Adam's every single move. Those people wouldn't know much about TFM or FYE. They might have seen the performance of FYE but people associate what they hear on radio with singles, they think WWFM is and probably always has been his single.

FYE got substantial plays on video channels though. I think they pulled it now but that might have confused some people.

I think posters need to realize this board is like living in a little bubble. If a song by your favorite artist peaks at #5 instead of #7 that may seem like a big deal since we obsess and analyze the charts...but in reality the general public doesn't know the difference. I'm sure a lot of people are somewhat familiar with "FYE" due to the AMA controversy and music video but when they hear "WWFM" on the radio I doubt many stop and think...wait is this his first, second, or third single? Another example: I live in NY. Z100, BLI, and PLJ have all given "WWFM" some nice support. Personally, I feel like I hear "WWFM" on the radio constantly enough to assume it must be a big hit. Most NY's probably think the song is near the top of the charts already. But just like Pulse represents a small population of the country so does NY.

^ Same. I live in CT and listen to BLI and z100, and if I wasn't on Pulse or w/e, I'd think the song is pretty big. Most people don't analyze stuff as much as the people here.

I would be amazed if IIHY does anything on US radio. That chorus is like... Alcazar, Scissor Sisters and Kylie Minogue combined.

FYE got substantial plays on video channels though. I think they pulled it now but that might have confused some people. It's still in diesel rotation on MTV Hits as well as one of the top viewed videos on MTV.com. It's also very popular on Fuse. I think the only network that removed it from their rotation is VH1. I still don't think that either FYE or TFM hurt Adam as far as the general population is concerned, but they did manage to remove some of the blinders that some in the media and the radio industry were wearing.

Actually, it's probably the perfect time to release a track like IIHY in the U.S. It's still a standard Max Martin uptempo but the disco throwback element of the chorus is what separates it from his other recent ones. It's a deceptive track. You think you're getting an "If U Seek Amy" redux a few seconds in but end up in Studio 54 by the time the chorus rolls around. It gets my vote for the next single.

I was about to state those reasons for why I don't like it. I don't know that Pop radio would embrace it unless WWFM really smashes or they wait to get another hit. They should release Sleepwalker next and then throw IIHY out because whereas Sleepwalker is a hit waiting to happen, IIHY is kinda different. Honestly though, after IIHY they are out of luck for pop radio. Nothing else would make a dent.

Also I think they definetely should NOT release sleepwalker after WWFM. They need an upbeat song inbetween. Also sleepwalker will be perfect next autumn.

I think IIHY will be great for the next single. It's got the dance beat that everyone loves, but it's still unique...it'll stand out on the radio, and it could hurt or help the song, but hopefully it will help it.

I honestly think they should release Sleepwalker to keep that "Soulful, quiet Adam" thing going, which people seem to love. I'm worried that IIHY would remiind radio stations of FYE and they might choose not to add it.

Yeah, I'd be happy with IIHY- though i'm not sure just singing it on Oprah means it is the next single- though I think it's the best choice- as someone has previously said, it is one of the only ones with a really good middle-eight and memorable- as much as people hype it, I don't see "Sleepwalker" doing anything- the more I hear it, the more bored of it I get.

I'd be fine with IIHY or Sleepwalker next. Both are awesome.
