I feel like Vampire Weekend has more detractors than fans at this point. I suppose that you could argue this to be true for any successful act, but it's almost as if it's become trendy to hate VW. and a lot of the reasons people give for disliking them are just silly. Not that I'm suggesting that anybody on this board is trend-hopping - I'm just making a general observation of the broad scheme of things. Well I've hated them from the first moment I heard "A-punk". And the reason why there's so much backlash against them is because there was so much hype surrounding them before they got big that when the public actually heard them, their reaction was along the lines of.... "that's it?". They've actually grown on me since then to the point where I barely tolerate them (I still hate "A-punk" though). But seriously, critics made them out to be the second coming and made such a huge deal out of how they're an Ivy League band and blah blah blah. And then when a lot of people who had heard about them actually heard the music itself, it was just so underwhelming.

Vampire Weekend is one I genuinely dislike for the music. I just don't like anything I've heard from them. Except for Horchata and that lasted about two weeks before I got tired of it too. Personally it's not a bandwagon thing. I'm like jvandyck, I heard A-punk and thought , really? This is the band getting rave reviews and hyped as the next Killers type band to sweep the country. I won't be on board for that ride.
I actually kind of felt that way about Cage The Elephant at first and although I'm definitely not a fan, I've grown to tolerate them far more than VW

Nope, oddly I like Owl City quite a bit. Fireflies was in my top 20 of last year.

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but it seems like the people who are making the biggest deal out of them being Ivy League and whatnot are their critics. And I've also seen more complaining about the hype than actual hype. I personally heard some tracks from them though my college radio station, without having heard anything about them before, and was very impressed. It was only a few days later that I found out how much buzz they had generated. But hey, I guess not everyone is going to "get" them, just as I can't get into Kings of Leon. I'm not under any delusion that they're the most innovative, groundbreaking band since the grunge era or anything. I just think they have a great sound, and have put out two near-consistently enjoyable albums.

Cage The Elephant is a band that is only succeeding because of the infectious nature of their singles.
Vampire Weekend is nothing but hype.

What irritates me about hype (and V-Dub's hype in particular) is that it prevented me from enjoying their performance when they came through town, so I mostly took it for granted.
I actually ended up really enjoying their first album, once everyone was mostly "over" it.
It's assuring to learn that, while they did all meet at Columbia, the preppy, trust-fund, yacht club crap is all irony. Irony so subtle it flew over everyone's heads 2 years ago.
"Cousins" was so-so, but I'm betting there's some great stuff elsewhere on Contra.

People didn't make a big deal over Harvard-educated Rivers Cuomo and Weezer.
Other than that, I don't see the irony in Vampire Weekend's Ivy League roots.

I'm really diggin' this track right now. Kinda weird as I didn't particularly like the previous two singles.

I don't like how this is doing so well. I'm kind of burned out on these guys now.

There is one indie-leaning band whose success eludes me. I just fail to see anything that appealing about Kings of Leon. "Sex On Fire" was catchy enough, but other than that, their music just seems so blah to me. Cage The Elephant is so much better than Kings of Leon it isn't funny. Hoping for the best for In One Ear

I don't think they'll ever have a mainstream single as huge as "Use Somebody" though, but all three of Cage The Elephant's singles are better than it in my opinion.

If Kings of Leon can release another track as good as The Bucket, I will give them more credibility.

Why is this one struggling on Active? It's the best of the three singles.

Honestly, I'm surprised they've done so well with their previous singles on Active in the first place.

I think this is the best single of the year so far. It's just so damn good. It's the best rock 'n' roll song in at least 3-5 years. This could be huge.

I don't understand what several of you see in this song. I don't see it as any better than the first 2 CTE singles (in fact, I like it the least). I find it fairly tiresome and plain.

It's like their previous 2 singles had a kid and this is it. I don't like it.

There hasn't been a rock song that channels the rebellious spirit of the rock 'n' roll of yesteryear in a long time. It's a blast from the past but still manages to avoid being stale.

I'm thinking it'll probably be Top 5 by next week. Wouldn't be surprised to see this hit the Hot 100 in a month or so, too.
