^That is correct. Just look at some acts regarded as the best in history, who have few #1s or none at all. I don't think Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Bruce Springsteen are losing sleep over their lack of #1s. And to bring it back to a commercial success point of view, likely nor are acts who enjoy impressive album sales/chart showings, but don't fare as well on the Hot 100. Ya think SuBo is upset that she hasn't scored a U.S. top 40 hit from her debut? Aretha Frankllin has hit #1 on the Hot 100. The iconic 60's anthem "Respect" in 1967, and her duet with George Michael in 1987, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" come to mind.

Hot 100 success is probably the best success an artist can have as far singles go, but it's not necessarily most important to each artist or the only chart that matters.

Note why he said few in his post as well. But he placed her in between two artists who have indeed, never hit #1 on the Hot 100 as singers, although they both have as songwriters, and then goes on to explicitly say they have a "lack" of #1's.

I don't get why Taio Cruz sold so much. This song was released in September in the UK. I mean, it's not like America was desperately waiting for Taio Cruz's first single.

The Hot 100 may not be the only measure of a song's popularity but it is the most consistent brand name.
Remember when the Top 40 radio format practically disappeared in the early 70s and the early/mid 90s? A number one on Mainstream Top 40 wasn't so impressive then.
The reality is that 45 singles, mp3 downloads, hot radio formats... these can all come & go, but for more than 50 years the all-encompassing Hot 100 has been seen as the industry standard.
Or do you think maybe its been Gavin, Cashbox, R&R or Mediabase?

I don't think we can just attribute those sales to Ludacris. If people were this hungry for Ludacris, "How Low" would've blown up in sales like this song did.

Well now this random Nothing on You song is #4 on iTunes. I guess the public just really likes the songs.
Like Fireflies and Hey There Delilah were freak hits.

But it took a while for these two to grow in sales and reach number 1. When a song has a huge debut like Taio Cruz it usually means there was great anticipation for the track (Womanizer, Crack a bottle, etc). But I just don't see why there would be anticipation for Taio Cruz's first single. It's not even really huge at radio yet.

Speaking of British artists crossing over to the US charts, I just noticed La Roux' "Bulletproof" debuted at #92. Good for them.

How bout a round of applause for the following 2009 hits who left the Hot 100 this week Already Gone Use Somebody Forever Meet Me Halfway Paparazzi *golf clap* For the record, Already Gone ended up lasting a week longer on the Hot 100 than Halo did. For whatever that's worth to you. Fingers crossed on All I Ever Wanted entering next week's Hot 100. Use Somebody was on the Hot 100 for 57 weeks. That's pretty amazing. Hope the Kings get more Hot 100 exposure, but besides Sex on Fire, which hasn't gone anywhere, I don't see another single on that album.

Aretha Frankllin has hit #1 on the Hot 100. The iconic 60's anthem "Respect" in 1967, and her duet with George Michael in 1987, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" come to mind. Note why he said few in his post as well. Aretha Franklin had numerous R&B hits also Some of the other artists produced complete albums Releasing a single to pop radio and cracking the top 40 is certainly relevant but not the only game in town The fact that non-pop artists had fewer #1 singles is not too surprising

Regarding Gaga's record label...
Note that airplay is not always determined by the record label pushing a song. Telephone got a lot of airplay and sales without any promotional effort. It was just a hot new duet that stations wanted to play and people wanted to buy before the label did a thing to promote it.
Something similar happened with LoveGame and Paparazzi as well. When a new artist is very popular, often radio stations will jump the gun on a new song. Paparazzi in particular had a highly publicized video that came out in the late spring (to coincide with international markets), which led to some stations playing the song and people buying the track before the label had begun pushing it in the US.
There are plenty of cases of songs taking off without the label pushing them. I believe Miley Cyrus' "See You Again" and Nelly's "Dilemma" were both songs that caught on without the label pushing them initially, and I'm sure there are many others.

Unfortunately it's not. This week probably would have been its one chance. Its sales aren't strong enough and while it's airplay is probably about to peak, it was proven this week that all you need is one strong single seller to claim the number one position. Again it's just bad timing for them - if another window does open up, you also have "Rude Boy" barking at their heels which has pretty strong sales and is also flying up the airplay chart. NYN just never had a chance really.. it would have been wonderful to see a country song top the hot 100 but no.. week after week it's a freakin' urban or pop single. Yeah, they should be happy with a #2 peak, but come on, why couldn't Taio Cruz have experienced the same climb as them and make that peak instead of flying out of the gates with a huge digital seller?? Another poster was right in saying that he'll probably just be another Jay Sean/Jason Derulo/Iyaz, etc.. big digital single and lousy album sales. "NYN" is FAR from peaking airplaywise. This song right now is sitting at #8 on CHR and is pretty clear now that NYN will be # 1 in some weeks. This means another +30 million in audience. On HAC and AC, the song is still climbing fast. Country is still spinning this song even being EIGHT MONTHS OLD at this format and we can count some few rhitmic spins. I believe that "NYN" might peak just when it reaches the 160 mil impressions mark, and this easily guarantee an #1 airplay hit. Besides, in the upcoming weeks they might have some big promo ahead. They can perform on Oprah, SNL, and many other shows that could boost downloads.Actually, they are nominated for some ACM awards, and if they want this #1, they must be aware that they need to perform "NYN" there. This song is a strong seller - everytime its performed, it goes to #1 on Itunes. So, they still have many chances to score the #1 hit NYN truly deserves.

8 13 16 24 Savior, Rise Against | 2 I believe, amongst titles that hit Bubbling Under and never entered the Hot 100, this ties "Savior" for tenth place in terms of weeks charted.

"Telephone" is sooooooo close to Top 10. Hopefully the video will push it higher especially with it topping the pop radio charts soon/now.
