I don't think Telephone is #3, #5/6 at most, Nothin' on You, Need You Now, Rude Boy (which seems to be the #1) and Break Your Heart are great competition

Beyonce is the stronger album seller, that's all that matters. that used to be true maybe, but not anymore. it's about the singles, the concerts and the merchandising and endorsements, etc... so i mean beyoncé still has it, partially because she also has an acting career, but i'm pretty sure her tours have taken in more money as well.

Singles don't mean more than albums. I agree with the rest of what you said, but just because singles are flashier and sell more digital downloads doesn't mean they outweigh album sales. I remember an article where the Black Eyed Peas weren't even happy about how much BBP sold because they and the label were only making a fraction of what they would make if album sales were higher. I know that seems picky, but I think, in general, this board puts WAY too much emphasis on single performance and #1 on Billboard over album sales, merchandising, and touring-all which actually make tons of money.

I agree with Bob and Love Plastic Love, in a way. Certainly, at the moment (as has been the case for decades), the revenue numbers, in absolute terms, from album sales trump the revenue accumulated through digital single sales for record labels, producers, singers and songwriters. But we are transitioning into an era where album sales continue to dwindle and album prices are falling (as UMG is now trying with its pricing limit of certain albums at $10), while digital single sales continue to skyrocket as more and more songs enter the 5,000,000 legal downloads club, while pricing of individual songs have increased in the US from $0.99 to $1.29. Futhermore, the growing trend of releasing albums with less tracks but at a greater frequency is making it more and more difficult for album sales to reach the historic levels that had existed before the internet age. I guess what I'm trying to say is that single sales and album sales are beginning to meet up at a middle ground in terms of gross revenue for music labels so the importance of album sales is not as strongly emphasized while single sales are experiencing heightened emphasis b/c of the trend of the industry. However, the real money for artists will always come from merchandising, endorsements, and touring, which don't respond so drastically to market changes as album/single sales have.

I do agree with your revisions of my original statement. I do know that the market is changing and albums aren't priced as highly or selling as much. I just think a label and artist would rather have an album sell 4 million plus than 2-3 singles sell 3 million and shit for the album. People here just seem to think a #1 on the billboard 100 is the be all end all of success when that isn't really the truth. It is a lot more complicated than that.

The money from an album selling 1 million copies or a single selling 3 million $1.29 downloads?

^^ yeah i definitely agree. having a number one song is great, but an album with longevity is definitely more rewarding for the artist and the label and it should be. it'll be a sad day if the album is replace by EPs of just six or seven radio-friendly songs than a full-length concept album.

LMAO @ people comparing Rihanna to Beyonce, they are NOT on the same level, Rihanna? Really?

There's no way Telephone is #3 on the Hot 100. It's airplay is almost the same as Nothin On You and Nothin On You sold more. Break Your Heart will most likely be #3.

Record sales only matter from a business standpoint, otherwise, they are just a way for obsessed fans to argue over their favorite artists. The general public won't be like, "Remember when Beyonce sold 4.2 millions copies of Dangerously in Love?" They're going to remember her #1 singles like "Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," "Irreplaceable," and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Same goes for Rihanna. So as long as their record companies are still investing money into them, I don't really think record sales are important (to us anyway).

Album sales have always been more important than single sales/success. A single is supposed to push an album anyway. A #1 hit means little if it doesn't translate into sales. It really doesn't matter what the general public thinks. I bet an artist would rather a hit album than a hit song.

It's great record companies can make some money off a digital song, but they want the song to sell the record. Anyways, Rude Boy is most likely #1 again? Eh? Awesome, such a great jam! Hope Tele is top 5 too!

Lady Gaga’s newest hit single “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé climbes 9-3 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 becoming her fourth Top 3 entry. The only two singles that peaked outside the top three were “LoveGame” (#5) and “Paparazzi” (#6).
“Telephone” has sold more than 1,200,000 copies in the United States to date and also became Lady Gaga’s sixth consecutive number one on pop radio.

Album sales have always been more important than single sales/success. A single is supposed to push an album anyway. A #1 hit means little if it doesn't translate into sales. It really doesn't matter what the general public thinks. I bet an artist would rather a hit album than a hit song. Album sales matter more, but can a single break even on single sales alone? We still don't know enough about the industry's cost structure for anybody to answer that question with confidence (I've been asking on these boards for months and nobody has even a ballpark estimate what the budget for a new single off an existing album is). And it's becoming a more important question as the ratio of single sales to album sales rises, albeit more for some genres and artists than others.

Yay @ Beyonce's 13th top 5 single!
It's funny... her only top 10 single to miss top 5 was "Sweet Dreams".
