Isn't the understocked issue not so much of an excuse anymore with iTunes, Amazon and such? Still great numbers for Monica Not everyone's gonna pay for digital albums e.g. I only pay for physical units of an album... So your argument is dismissed. The argument is dismissed just because you only buy physical albums! LMFAO!!! Right, because you control album sales, of course!! Anyway, I do think many people do purchase online, especially if they went to the store and the album they wanted wasn't in stock, or they just could have went to the next store to find it. Justin is beating her fair and square, but I do think Monica is doing just fine.

Downloads only make up a certain percentage of overall sales and not everyone wants to bother with ordering a psychical copy online, paying s&h, and waiting for it to be delivered.

..and it may sound dumb, but not everyone owns a credit or debit card. Some people are still stuck in the ice ages. lol I keep hearing that Monica's album was sold out everywhere, so that definitely will affect her sales just a bit. Those are still good numbers. Her 2nd week should probably be strong after they ship more units out and the people who weren't able to get it first week will have the opportunity to do so the second week.

Wow Go Monica! People shouldn't underestimate what a successful adult-R&B song can do for an artist like her. Of course her show has helped her a lot too. John Legend's Once Again didn't generate any hits but still did very well, probably because he stayed true to his core format.

Still great numbers for Monica Not everyone's gonna pay for digital albums e.g. I only pay for physical units of an album... So your argument is dismissed. Mine is a perfectly valid argument, regardless of what some people's preferences are. The album is available to buy physically and digitally online (some albums sell more on iTunes than they do in physical copies, for instance... iTunes/Amazon isn't a brand new phenomenon for music buyers). Will a small fraction of buyers not be able to buy it in store because of it being understocked? Probably. But if they want the album, they can still easily buy it in this day and age. So 'stocking problems' isn't the issue it once was.

Only once in all the years I have been buying music, have I found a stocking issue or availablility issue for an album I wanted
Almost always, If I want it bad enough I will find it

That's exactly what Monica's label did --- they shipped out more units. And stores are allowed to order more copies if there is an extreme demand for it.

For comparison purposes, Justin Bieber's label shipped out about 1 million units and he is projected to sell around 250k out of those shipments. Monica's label shipped out only 400k and is projected to sell around 195k (it may be more depending on the demand of shipments).

of course basically everyone who was dying for the album was able to get it, but a lot of sales are from casual customers or people who don't have time or aren't SO eager that they'll go to a second store. a lot of people are just like, let's look at the new CDs, oh they're out of Monica, oh well.

..and it may sound dumb, but not everyone owns a credit or debit card. Some people are still stuck in the ice ages. I think the larger practical obstacle to digital sales is people who don't have high-speed internet connections. If I was still on a dial-up line or had a shoddy old PC, I'd probably never download music either. I ran the numbers back in November on the big-selling albums of 2009, and they varied from 9% to about 35% digital sales, although the big outliers after that were Susan Boyle (almost no digital sales I could find) and Owl City (well over 40% digital). Personally, of albums released 2008-09 I bought five CDs and 2 digital albums, my wife bought something like 5 or 6 CDs and no digital. Some industry sources have predicted that 2010 will be the year the album market exceeds 50% digital, but that seems to me like it's probably another year away, at least.

It would be great if Monice pulled ahead of Bieber, but that's not very likely, is it? :(

Well here is some inside info from Clive Davis's son tweet regarding Monica
"Here's a little industry insight. RCA under-shipped on Monica's album & is scrambling to restock it. She otherwise wouldve beaten Bieber" @djd

I guess we will see next week. By then the label would have shipped more copies, so let's see who comes out top for their 2nd week. It would be nice to see Monica do it, but who know;s.

While I don't think she would've conquered Bieber, I do think their album sales would've been much closer had they shipped out the 400k initially.

Well here is some inside info from Clive Davis's son tweet regarding Monica "Here's a little industry insight. RCA under-shipped on Monica's album & is scrambling to restock it. She otherwise wouldve beaten Bieber" @djd So they only start backing her after she started selling. Ughh. Typical Clive Davis, jump on anything that's successful. And no disrespect to Monica, because she is doing great, and I congratulate her on that. But the statement "She otherwise wouldve beaten Bieber" is just nonsense. He beat her fair and square. It's the labels fault they didn't ship out more copies. Davis trying to take away from a 16 year old boy, Bieber, having his first #1 album is just embarrassing, for Clive. Congratulations both Monica and Justin on improvements on first week sales from both your respective previous albums.

Usher's new album drops tomorrow, so neither one of them will be number 1 for a second week , expect a big sales dip for them both....

Beiber is a joke. Can't believe there is over 200,000 people that would buy that garbage.

Im not hating, but besides looking like a cute lesbian, what has Bieber got??. He can't dance, his videos are as cheesy as it gets, his music is pretty much average. I mean, at least the BSB and NSync had great pop songs ,besides their good looks. His success is just puzzling.

Kids. That's all I can think of. I can't think of any adult in their right mind who would want to listen to that SH*T. There's almost a universal hatred for this guy... although his album is also selling well in the UK and Australia. How weird is that? He'll probably be the next Aaron Carter, once his voice breaks it won't be so "cute' anymore.

And he's bout to have 2 albums in the Top 10 this week. Beiber is having a Gaga/Taylor type of year so far.

Bieber's a heartthrob for girls age 14 and under. There's always somebody in the market who fills that niche. Once in a while, it's a real artist, like the Beatles in 1964, but usually it's somebody as disposable as the Bay Ciity Rollers or the New Kids on the Block.

And he's bout to have 2 albums in the Top 10 this week. . This would be why Monica's drop in week 2 (even the old diisc is still selling) will be bigger than Justin Bieber's, even with an alleged shortage Justin Bieber is the next big star and will likely be around a while.
