in a simple word it means that 257 million people were listening to WBT in a week. correct me if i'm wrong. k, gotcha. thanks- a freakin' lot of people heard the song in one week. I didn't realize it was just 1 week. hmm. not exactly 257M people were listening to that song in a week. example: if you listening to Rude boy 10 times today on radio. bds would count you as 10 different people

It could have been heard on average 10 times each by 25.7 million people, for example.

Saying it was heard 257 million times may implicate that the song was played that many times, which we know isn't the case. :) Rather, 257 million audience impressions- whether that's unique listeners or multiple listens by various listeners. The Arbitron ratings are as flawed in their underrepresentation as the Nielsen ratings, but that's the measurement we must go by.
Re Rihanna- she's had a bigger streak of hit albums and singles, though, than Paula Abdul. While Rihanna isn't that important as an artist (as Abdul wasn't), there's no denying her success and appeal to the music-buying public. So, I wouldn't be so sure about counting her out 10 years from now- but, we'll see.

Audience impressions = number of times a song was heard.
That is the simplest definition -- not sure how anyone would interpret that as number of times a song was played. That would be the spin count.

Why does "Umbrella" still feel like Rihanna's biggest hit despite "Rude Boy" passing it very soon? soon? umbrella stayed at #1 for 7 weeks , RB has been #1 for 2 weeks so far. Umbrella had the biggest debut week ever on digital chart, it was selling like crazy. RB is not selling that good, airplay is helping it more than sales, where at umbrella's case sales were stronger. not to mention the quality of songs and the impact of umbrella. umbrella is one of the most known songs and the song that we remember 00's for. umbrella also had new sound. disturbia is way better than RB and it's bigger hit so far. RB is just a catchy trash. I feel like rihanna's fans are making it bigger than it is or it will be.

Rude Boy is an amazingly catchy song from a critically acclaimed album, that sounds like nothing on the radio right now. I don't see the problem when we've had such predictable hits this year. a HUGE hit on three different formats - possibly #1, in it's SIXTH week as the biggest airplay gainer. great, solid strong sales.
while it's obviously not umbrella, why are there always people trying to make everything she does smaller than it is? ;)

I feel like rihanna's fans are making it bigger than it is or it will be. Her fans are clearly manipulating radio day in and day out and forging digital support with extremely effective consecutive (st an-driven) download days. I don't know who they think they're fooling with Flop Boy! I'm glad some of us are smart enough to see through it all though!

Rhianna is the new Paula Abdul...in 10 years, will never hear from her again. any chance Hey Soul Sister can climb to #1? People said in 2005 that no one would even remember her in five years, GaGa would fail after Just Dance's explosion on radio/itunes, and Train would never reach top 10 after Drops of Jupiter, and lo and behold, Rihanna is at number one on the Hot 100 in 2010, The Fame Monster has spawned two massive hits, and Train is top 10. I think these lofty and uninformed predictions are pretty pointless and have consistently been proven wrong.

What a weird thing to say whilst her single is dominating the Hot 100 chart for its third week (well it's very likely anyway) If HSS gets #1 it has a much greater chance at doing it next week rather than this week's chart.

You're right, br- I think I had an anal moment there. :) Wasn't that anyone would interpret that as # of spins. If I speak to 10 people, 10 people hear what I said; but it wasn't "heard 10 times." Like I said, one of those moments. :) Why do people have a problem with "Rude Boy's" success? Like other big singles haven't failed to drive the parent album back to the top of the charts? And, radio is wise to mega-fan's radio campaigns, so it's not that driving the airplay so much. And, as proven, download days do not have large effect on the charts. So, again, it's deserving of its success thanks to big airplay and sales.

If you say something ten times then you were heard 10 times. If a song has a 257 mi audience it wasn't heard 257 mi times, it was heard by 257 mi people (even thought they might not be different people). When someone has the most votes on American Idol it does not mean more people voted for him. It just means that people voted for him the most times, even if it was just 10 people voting.

I think its more of the fact that she wasnt supposed to have a HUGE single from Rated R. No one, including myself had any idea of how massive Rude Boy would be.

If a song has a 257 mi audience it wasn't heard 257 mi times, it was heard by 257 mi people (even thought they might not be different people). Saying something was heard by 257 million people connotes that they're all different people; a person can't count as more than one person unless there's some sort of qualifer added. Saying it was heard 257 million times is more accurate, albeit still inexact. If you wanted to word it precisely, it's an approximation of the sum of the number of people listening to the song each instance it was spun throughout the week. In this way, a person is counted each time he or she is listening without actually being counted as more than one person; however, that's also wordy and less easy to understand.

I feel that this single is still undeserving of its success. Russian Roulette, which was a much better song and showcased a mature direction, was ignored, while this song that sounds like a remix desperately trying to repeat Umbrella's success is spending multiple weeks at #1...
