In light of the recent removal of Uncle Kracker from the AC chart, I decided to e-mail the folks at R&R and see what had happened. I received an e-mail back from Julie Kertes, AC/Hot AC editor. She announced that they recently revised their recurrent rule to the following:
"Effective August 16 [2004], Songs below No. 15 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks on the chart, and songs below No.5 are moved to recurrent after 50 weeks on the chart."
So that's the explanation for the removal of Drift Away from the AC chart... the question is - will this make the AC chart move quicker?

For awhile, then it'll probably start moving even slower. Then, the new recurrent rule, probably at the end of 2006, will become "songs below #1 are moved to recurrent after 50 weeks on the chart"

Well, at least this means AT10 may see a slightly less stagnant chart in the future than it would've otherwise (since the previous recurrent rules weren't really relevant for it anymore). (Major emphasis on "slightly", by the way!)Β :)
Can somebody list what current top ten songs are approaching the 50 week mark?

Can somebody list what current top ten songs are approaching the 50 week mark? I think Dido's White Flag is about 2 months from going recurrent under this new rule (assuming it falls below #5). Also, Shery Crow must be pretty close to that...

This is interesting. Is there any mention of bullets and stuff? I think that songs should be allowed to stay on as long as they have had a bullet for three consecutive charts. Thus allowing the removal of songs that get a sudden one-week-only bullet but keeping songs that may be a really slow riser but still have a chance at peaking higher.
How many songs have been/will be effected by the new rule?
Should make the Sans Recurrent Chart even more interesting!

As of the current chart (August 20), both Dido and Sheryl Crow are at 45 weeks. They'll probably surpass 50 weeks before leaving the Top Five, considering how uncompetitive everything below is. Other than that, no songs are going to be shipped off to recurrent land anytime soon. So even though there will be one debut on the August 28 chart, that may be it until October. Unless Josh Groban and Lionel Richie lose steam. I have a feeling that Josh Groban (currently at 42 weeks) will fall out of the Top Ten on AT10 before reaching the fifty-week mark. But it should be interesting seeing Dido and Sheryl Crow falling out from inside the Top Five.

This is ridiculous, of course. It's not going to make the chart turnover faster. The only difference is that we're now going to see a song sitting at #20 with 19 spins. What next? Like ulij said, a 50/1 rule? Thanks JCMF3 for thinking of emailing them.

What next? Like ulij said, a 50/1 rule? If they do that, imagine a song at #1 in its 50th week on the chart, even on AT10. Casey will have to say something like "Will 'White Flag' by Dido stay at number one for an eight big week? Only one way to find out, let the countdown begin." (Number Ten jingle) Well we have one debut this week, so that means we have to say goodbye to a dropper. Falling off the survey is 'White Flag' by Dido."

Honestly, I think that Uncle Kracker would have fallen off the AC chart by November. It was bobbling around in the 8-10 spot, but it would have gone below #10 for one week, I am almost certain.
But of course this means that the old longevity records will probably never be challenged as many of those songs accumulated weeks in the 5-10 range of the chart. So now we will have songs only spend 50 weeks on and get off the chart.
Now I can't wait to see the Sans Recurrent Rules charts...

LOL, I'm sorry but I don't think such a word exists. From dictionary.com: bobΒ·ble ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bbl) v. bobΒ·bled, bobΒ·bling, bobΒ·bles v. intr. To bob up and down. v. tr. To lose one's grip on (a ball, for example) momentarily. n. A mistake or blunder.
