^ What do those 3 older artists have in common?! Waiting 10 YEARS to release their albums! Alicia was coming off of the biggest studio album of 2007, with 3.7 million copies sold. Usher's last album was released less than 2 years ago and only sold 1.2 million copies. How can you compare the situations? He's still trying to work his way back on top, Alicia was coming straight FROM the top. And even then, I can find some more artists who did Platinum without those factors. Like I said, people enjoy making excuses for these big named artists doing under expectations. If Usher flops, then call it what it is --- a flop. Don't make excuses. The Mariah fans didn't --- well, most of them didn't.

I wouldn't necessarily say standard, but he has been in the game forever. I would say steadily pounding out gold to platinum cds is better than most artists will be doing 15 years into their career especially without multiformat smashes to fuel them. Hell, that is better than what most artists do 5 years or less into their "careers" From what I understand some of his songs are just getting started too so it is possible he will stabilize and at least hit that platinum mark. Uh-huh. This is 15 years after Usher's first R&B hit Think of You. People look at Madonna and think its easy to stay on top, but its not at all. Even Madonna had her low points. 15 years into Prince's career, he was happy to get a top 10 album that would go gold. Usher, even with bad sales climate, will still get a gold album and has gotten a number one album. Confessions is a staple on the catalogue charts and will probably be the next 10 million seller in SS. OMG has now reached top 10 on the BB 100, and seems to be climbing still (#1, maybe?). The picture looks good. He could make platinum with good signles choices. This album is more radio friendly than the last, and Usher's is behaving himself. He was so annoying last time around.

If OMG catches on and does nothing for the album like some of you are expecting it to do (a hit single doesn't guarantee a hit album, by the way), then I want to see the excuses then. You all are acting like Usher has been around 30 years. He is still a current day big named artist.

Go look at Omarion, Mario, and Chris Brown's album sales. Trey Songz is the only one doing good, but even he has not reached platinum. Who else is there... Ne-Yo sold 1.1 million with 3 top 10 hits, Usher sold 1.2 million basically on one #1 song and that was it. He's in a better place than the rest of them, trust. He has an established fanbase, and thats what matters when it comes down to it.

Sure, Usher is not doing that bad and he will probably outsell most of these R&B artists/Mike Jackson knock offs, which is not saying much. But if you look at their track records and Usher's, then you'd see my point. If you don't think it's fair to compare Usher's situation to Sade/Maxwell/Whitney's, then how is it any fairer to compare Usher's to Omarion/Mario/Chris Brown's? (Usher's been around the same amount of time as Maxwell or a few years more, by the way). I think the reason why Usher hasn't done well as he should is not because of lack of radio support (that's just one factor), but because he hasn't done much for people to buy his album. Quality, radio support, promo, among other factors play a big role in people wanting to spend money on a CD.

Maxwell is an R&B artists that has gone 1xp. Which Maxwell? The one who released his first album in 8 years? Sade- 9 years Maxwell- 8 years Whitney- 8 years Usher- 2 years Alicia's last album 3.7 mil Usher's last album- 1.2 mil And lets NOT forget that Usher's album opened bigger than Whitney's and Maxwell's. And Whitney would be nowhere near platinum if it wasn't for her pimping her drama on Oprah. Explain to me why Whitney's album outscanned Mariah's, Madonna's and Janet's. What, quality?!

Comparable how? Why aren't the little R&B cats comparable? They flopped miserably, all of them. Trey is the only one doing good, but has not gone platinum. Who else do you wanna compare Usher to? Jason Derulo? Jay Sean? FLUSH! Ne-Yo is who we should look at. They sold the same, and we know who was REALLY relevant and on top in 2008. It most certainly was not Ush.

Whitney's album will end up topping 1 million for two reasons, it was her first album in 7 years and was hyped as the comeback from her troubles. Provided her next LP has the same lack of success singles-wise, it won't even touch 500,000 in total.

Considering Mario and Omarion have never been huge sellers, it's really not surprising why they aren't doing strong numbers. Chris Brown? Really? Let's not pretend like Chris Brown's failed era didn't have anything to with the whole Rihanna beatdown. We all know how Chris Brown's previous era did to Usher's. No? And are Jason Derulo and Jay Sean even classified as R&B? Like I said, going from 9.7 million to 1.2 million to 750k or whatever ain't nothing to write home about, and that's what I'm sticking with.

15 years into Prince's career, he was happy to get a top 10 album that would go gold. prince came out in 1977-78 15 years down is 1992-93 Diamonds and pearls was multi-platinum had a few top 5 hits; including a #1 single cream, #3 d&p and get off, "sexy MF" was #2 in uk he also had platinum album right after d&p he also had a huge hit with "the most beautiful girl in the world" a world wide #1 in 1994 that was despite the fact he had been feuding with him label at around the same time. "Gold" was his best album of the 90s but wb failed to market it between 1983-1995 == 13 consecutive yrs prince had at least one top 10 single in each of those yrs emancipation was 2xplatinum 2004 musicology sales without the give ways was about 1.1mil 2004 prince was the biggest money maker of that yr

^ Oh, get over yourself. His first album didn't do anything. He really because somebody in 1979 with "Prince."
Prince had a bunch of flops in the mid 90s, bnounced back with Emacipation, then fell off again until Musicology. I was gonna use George Michael as an example, but he was still the King of Europe. Prince flopped everywhere, so I chose him. ;)

The album came out two weeks ago and you're trying to write it off already? It pulled in bigger numbers in its first week than most people here expected. That 72% decline is only a bit higher than usual and should be expected given the album's release coincided with Easter. If anything, Usher's off to a great start. Stop grasping at straws.

Who is acting like he has been around for 30 years? Multiple people stated the exact time-15 years. Probably 99% of artists never make it past year 10 so that is an accomplishment in itself. Madonna and such are NOT the norm-lasting at all is a huge success all too often taken for granted by people who don't see the massive amounts of artists who never establish a long-lasting career. And why on earth are we comparing him to a random country artist with a completely different career in every shape, fashion, and form??? This is one of those discussions that is so random and bizarre that I don't even know how to respond.
I am just saying that Usher, in some ways, already has a fairly secure career. He is still getting hits on his formats and decent overall hits. He is still going platinum per cd and this one may get there as well. It really only needs to sell 400K more to be certified. I don't see why a veteran artist "only" selling platinum is a horrible disaster worthy of being mocked and potentially ending his career. Even of artists who have lasted 15+ years almost all of them have slowed down or flopped big time before.

If J Records had managed her singles better and released TSWIBH first, that most likely been a hit on pop. She got screwed with them releasing DMA as a lead single. But she still sold a healthy amount.

Let's see the excuses within the next few weeks or months. Your whole stance on this is just confusing. This is doing much better than Memoirs, and there's no reason to think it'll drop down the charts. You're making some big assumptions here that don't seemed grounded in actual facts.

Honey, this is in response to Love Plastic's post about basically giving Usher a pass because he's 15 years deep in the game. I don't remember people giving Mariah a pass when she did under expectations despite her adding another certified album to her mantle, and she's been around 20 years. And of course I'm making assumptions. Like I said, we'll see in the next few weeks or months how this album does in the long run, and I will also be interested in the next set of excuses given if this album doesn't catch on or hold steady like some of you are assuming (I'm not the only one) it will. That is all.

From Billboard themselves:
Bieber Poised For Next Week's No. 1 April 15, 2010 - Rock and Pop
By Keith Caulfield, L.A
It'll likely be the Bieber 200 albums chart again next week, as Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" will likely hold on to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 for a third non-consecutive week, as industry prognosticators don't forecast any new releases challenging the 16-year old for the chart throne. "My World 2.0" may finish the week with around 80,000 copies sold.
Sources suggest that the biggest new entry will come in the form of MGMT's sophomore album "Congratulations," which may sell between 65,000 and 75,000 by week's end on April 18. It could start as high as No. 2 on the chart, depending on how much of a decline Usher's "Raymond v Raymond" – currently No. 2 this week - experiences in its third chart week. (A No. 1 debut is a possibility for MGMT, but again, it depends on if Bieber's "My World 2.0" collapses harder than expected.)
Even if MGMT's set finishes the week at the lower end of its projected first-week sum, it'll still be the best week ever for the act. Its first album, "Oracular Spectacular," never sold more than 17,000 in a week and topped out at No. 38 on the chart.
The next biggest debut on the list will likely belong to Coheed and Cambria's "Year of the Black Rainbow," which may sell in the neighborhood of 50,000 to 60,000. The act's last album "No World For Tomorrow" debuted at No. 6 with 62,000 upon its release in October of 2007.
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2009 when, in the post-Easter week frame, the soundtrack to "Hannah Montana: the Movie" ascended to No. 1 for the first time, moving 2-1, selling 133,000 (down 32%). The previous week's chart-topper, Rascal Flatts' "Unstoppable," fell to No. 3 with 107,000 (down 69%). The highest new entry belonged to Day26's "Forever in a Day," which started at No. 2 with 113,000.
----------------
Oh no, MGMT aren't going to #1. :o :(

The people's expectations on the board? I doubt his label takes into consideration some random people's opinions on a messageboard, and I doubt his label laughed his 72% drop off like it wasn't anything.

Enough with the Usher talk, though. I think the race between MGMT and Bieber will be close. I wouldn't be too quick to rule Billboard's projections as true. HITS actually made better projections than they have in the past quite a few times.

If Hits has MGMT at 75-80K, then I'd feel more confident about the win. But this reminds me of the Chrisette Michelle & CI-ERROR race - speaking of which, does CI-ERROR's new album "Basic Instinct" have a shot at #1? She could pick an easy dead week in the Summertime for that to happen.

She only lost the #1 spot by 2,000 copies if I recall correctly. :o Chrisette Michelle - 83,000 (#1) Ciara - 81,000 (#3)

^ Yes, that's exactly how I remember it. And HITS does have MGMT for 75k+. The top tier projections come out tomorrow, so we'll have a better view of where they stand. It'll probably be super close.
