It's a pretty tight race at this point for #1 next week. We're giving the edge to Justin Bieber, who, coming off a successful SNL appearance, will likely ride the momentum into the weekend. MGMT will provide a strong challenge, however, and may benefit from this weekend's Record Store Day traffic. And unless something unforeseen happens, Columbia will have two entries in the Top 5, the other being neo-progsters Coheed & Cambria. On the downside, this will be just the second time so far this year that the #1 album has sold less than 100k. But looking at the bright side, at this point last year, eight #1 albums had come in under that mark. Justin Bieber, My World 2.0 (Island/IDJ) 80-85k * MGMT (Columbia) 70-75k Usher (LaFace/JLG) 65-70k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 60-65k * Coheed & Cambria (Columbia) 55-60k Now 33 (Capitol/EMI) 40-45k Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 30-35k Ke$ha (RCA/RMG) 28-32k Monica (J/RMG) 28-32k Sade (Epic) 25-28k Ludacris (DTP/Def Jam/IDJ) 25-28k Slash (Dik Hayd/EMI) 25-28k Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 22-25k * Jeff Beck (Atco/Rhino) 22-25k Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 18-22k * Natalie Merchant (Nonesuch) 18-22k Justin Bieber, My World (Island/IDJ) 18-22k * Gucci Mane (Asylum) 18-22k Erykah Badu (Universal Motown) 18-22k * Denotes debut You may now return to preparing for Coachella…or the NBA Playoffs. DWTS does wonders? Basedo n that projection, it doesn't look like Sade will see a big sales gain. For whatever reason, DWTS doesn't have as much sales impact as something like Idol does.
Madonna not projected to be in the top 20? SHOCKING- not. :) Probably will drop to 10K or so (a little more if it's lucky).

I don't remember Rihanna's sales doing anything when she performed there. Sade's appearance will give them a decent enough increase to put them back in the top 10, depending on how the others do who are selling in that range. Either way, Sade will be at about 1.1 million next week. Compared to Whitney's and Maxwell's comebacks, I say they are the most successful.

Yah, sade has ssold more than those two, so it is a more successful comeback. Once again, several albums projected to sell it he close ranges, so will be close for top 10 contention.
Re Idol Vs. DWTS- in terms of overall impact (album and digital sales), Idol seems to have the bigger effect. Then again, Idol's results show ratings are bigger than that of DWTS.

To your first part of your post, I basically said that same thing you said in my post. :) Also, I'm not disagreeing with you about the Idol vs. DWTS, but DWTS is great promo though. Speaking of Idol, I think Epic needs to get up on their job and try to get Sade to perform there. I'm glad they are not falling off the radar. Promo seems strong right now.

Sade is evidence that one doesn't need a huge single to succeed. Granted, the group takes so much time off, that there is pent-up demand, so that should be taken into consideration to a degree. However, for a group with a 51-year-old lead singer, no matter the circumstances, scanning more than 1m in these days is impressive. The Urban AC success (like Whitney) won't help much in terms of Hot 100 success, but it could drive some album sales.

With more success at Urban AC and then looking through year's end, the album should surpass 1.5 million, I would think. Could see it going a little higher, though 2m may be pushing it. Sade is the kind of act that could sell "quietly" and consistently for some time.

That's quite disappointing for MGMT imo, especially considering that Vampire Weekend scored just under twice as much with a Q1 release.

I'm hoping that Sade also end up in the Top 10 on the Soundscan totals. I'm very pleased by the move.

This week, Albums #4 through #6 sold more than the albums that were in that position last year.

Wow, MGMT's number is almost less than half of what Vampire Weekend sold to hit #1. :o
It's a shame they didn't lead at all on Billboard/HDD's initial's projections.

MGMT has suffered from bad word of mouth. I really, really wanted to like this album but it just isn't very good. I was hoping some tracks would grow on me, but so far I just find the album tuneless and obnoxious.
I think a lot of other people have felt the same way. Instead of becoming a major new musical force, like many of us hoped and anticipated after "Oracular Spectacular," MGMT is looking more like a fluke, a three-hit wonder.

What caused the gain for Plastic Beach? The price was discounted back down to $7.99 at various retailers and it appeared in the Best Buy circular.

Even GGGB only did 2.5 million after a re-release and 8 singles, all of which had videos and most of which got big radio airplay.

This just proves that mega hits don't always sell albums.
I mean, when you have someone like Sade doing strong numbers with no pop airplay and someone like Rihanna selling 15k with over 150 million in audience, that should trigger something. And yes, I'm well aware of the whole 'comeback' factor Sade has. But Rihanna has a hit and it should be pushing some units.
