Of course, with Billboard's more recent methodology of weighing pre-December 1991 singles more than those to come after it, the list would have some differences. For instance, when ranking Madonna's top 50 hits in the decade-end issue, "Vogue" was No. 2 and "Take a Bow" was No. 4. So, there may be some notable shake-ups in a revised top 100.

Even Britney's biggest hit to date still ranks low against others that were released in '99.
I don't know how ... Baby One More Time ranked lower than Genie In A Bottle and If You Had My Love when it was ranked #5 on BB Year End Charts for 1999, and the last two ranked #7 and #12 respectively

If they "revised" the methodology, it basically means the previous list was wrong.

I wish the radio scene were as diverse as it was then

Don't have much knowledge of the Madonna list but what I know about the 90's lists The 100th anniversary list that came out in 1998 and the decade end list of 1999 both had very similar patterns in terms of how they were ranked. If you were #1 for 16 weeks you had a bigger hit than a song that was #1 for 3 weeks. Both lists had essentially the same list at the top because of the switch that took place in 1991. Where they were basically saying that the all time biggest hit ever was One Sweet Day. Which obviously isn't necessarily true. Because One Sweet Day occurred in an era where 10 weeks or more at #1 was common and all hits that came before it were lesser hits because it didn't spend 16 weeks at #1. An appropriate method up to that time but it doesn't make it wrong. That is one way to measure it. Much like the I Gotta Feeling discussiion in the other thread (where Joel Whitburn has his method and Billboard has a different one. Even another way to measure would have Candle In The Wind as as the biggest hit of the 90's and one of the biggest hits of all time, right up there with White Christmas Basically the methods from the Billboard 90s lists are not wrong, they are just measured differently than they choose to measure it now

^Yes- just a different way of looking at it.
The 50th anniversary of the Hot 100 list that was out in 2008 weighted pre-BDS/-SoundScan-era hits differently than late 1991-presents hits, to account for the greater accuracy benefit that late-91-present hits had/have. I'm pretty sure Billboards also used that methodology for ranking Madonna's top 50 hits in December 2009 (the year-end/decade-end issue). Otherwise, "Like a Virgin' and "Vogue" would not rank above "Take a Bow." I personally like the most recent methodology best, as previous methodologies did not account for the pre-BDS/-SoundScan and post-BDS-/SoundScan differences.

Both J.Lo and Xtina had 5 weeks at #1 with their singles, while Britney only had 2.

These lists that Billboard produces are fun, but don't have much logic to them.
"One Sweet Day" finished behind "Marcarena" in the year-end list of 1996, but is ranked ahead of it on the list of top songs of the 1990s!
The 1996 year-end list totalled the chart points that each song accumulated during its' HOT 100 chart run and is thus a much more accurate method of measuring popularity.

I find it a bit interesting that Celine has 4 appearances on this chart, yet My Heart Will Go On missed out. That's not surprising. Only a limited amount of commercial singles were released for that, which significantly shortened its chart run.

No. Different point systems were used for the 1996 chart 1990s chart One Sweet Day, was contained entirely in the 1996 chart year and if anything had a rather short longevity. One Sweet Day charted 27 weeks altogether including its first 16 weeks at #1 Macarena ran for 60 weeks and to date is one of the longest running singles ever.

The reason they use these point systems on decade charts rather than tha systems they use during the year because the weights from sales to sirplay change constantly. Songs have different ratios in 2008 than they do in 2006 thus, different systems that can't be compared

"Smooth" spent 12 weeks at #1 in 1999-00, but during its' long run at the top I don't think it ever got more than 20,000 chart points on any given week. On the present Hot 100, 20,000 chart points may get a song into the top 5. A number 1 song often has more than 30,000 chart points. All due to the explosion in digital downloads. These special lists that Billboard produces fall into the "fun but not accurate" category of statistics.

^The most recent one (for the Hot 100 50th anniversary) may be the best methodology yet for "all-time" chart lists, because it would not be accurate/fair to use a standard points system to rank pre-BDS-/SoundScan-era singles with those peaking from late 1991-present.

I find it a bit interesting that Celine has 4 appearances on this chart, yet My Heart Will Go On missed out. Which highlights the problem with these lists. "My Heart Will Go On" was deleted at retail after (I believe) only 800,000 or so copies were produced. It "only" spent 2 weeks at #1, and quickly dropped out of the top 10. But those 2 weeks at #1 were monsters in terms of # of points. If it had been around in today's digital world where songs are not deleted from retail, it would have sold in the millions (the album topped 10 million I believe). If one looks at how many chart points "My Heart Will Go On" accumulated in 1998, it ranks higher than "My Way" by Usher and "My All" by Mariah Carey (it ranked #13 for the year, the other two songs ranked lower).

I think it was 650,000. I remember going to several stores and all of them were sold out of the single. I finally found a cassette single of the song at a Walgreens. I'm sure if it had not been deleted after 2 weeks, it would've had a much longer run at the top.

In terms of actual # of points accumulated, here is my rough guess of the top 3:
1. Candle in Wind 1997 (it sold over 10 million copies, which equates to more than 1 million chart points);
2. I Will Always Love You (it sold over 4 million copies, including an amazing 630,000 plus the week of January 9th, 1993);
3. Macarena (sold over 4 million copies as well, but was not as big an airplay hit as "I Will Always Love You").

Keep in mind a lot of these charts are skewed because a song was disqualified if it didn't have an official single release, and these releases were often withheld to promote album sales.
The fact that the "top 100" songs of the 1990's doesn't include No Doubt's Don't Speak or anything by Alanis Morissette speaks for itself.

"My Heart Will Go On" had the record for highest airplay total (think it was 116m-121m) from 1991-late 1998 (before country, R&B, etc. stations joined the Hot 100 panel). I think it sanned 260,000 or so in its first week at retail (as noted, only a certain number of singls were manufactured, and they went pretty quickly).
And, yah- the period of 1994-1998 saw many a big radio hit not represented on the Hot 100 (and those charting in late 1998 after they had peaked- i.e. "Torn"- comand more importance for their Hot 100 Airplay peak than Hot 100 one).
