Can't be arsed with Y&I atm. It's decent, but after TEOG... gimme Schiesse! It is unclear why audience members had the eggs in the first place, however. Pointless controversy.

I can understand how a pop-star using a wheelchair-bound status as a "shock prop" could be felt as disrespectful by that group of people. It wasn't a "shock prop". Her feet were bound in the mermaid suit so she couldn't walk. She used it to transport herself around stage. Sure, maybe feelings that she disrespected them are reasonable but there's no reason for an outburst and feelings of offense. She obviously wasn't attacking the wheelchair community but these people seemed to think she was.

Bette Midler is getting catty with Gaga on Twitter.
BetteMidler Bette Midler Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar-it's because it is!You can see it on youtube 24/7-with ME performing it
BetteMidler Bette Midler Iβm not sure @ladygaga knows that Iβve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people -- and many of them are still alive.....

I don't get what Bette Midler is trying to accomplish by this. She's only ruining her own legacy/reputation by doing so. GaGa has yet to say a single bad word about any person in the entertainment industry so if anything GaGa may issue an apology and look like the bigger person instead of Bette Midler keeping her dignity.

I agree. Gaga draws a lot of inspiration from pop stars from the 70s and 80s, so I don't doubt that Bette's performances are where Gaga got this inspiration from. That said, she doesn't have to announce that before she does it. Bette seemed to take it as stealing her idea because Gaga didn't give her credit, something Gaga doesn't even have to do because it's not like Bette has a copyright on the idea. It would be a little ridiculous before her "YoΓΌ & I" performance to have come out first and said, "Okay what am I am about to do was, to my knowledge, first done by Bette Midler" or to say "The costume I am wearing for my next song is inspired by one worn by David Bowie". She acknowledges her influences plenty, but she doesn't have to interrupt her show to give credit to each individual inspiration.

Something as direct as that though is iffy. Sure Bette doesn't own a copyright on it but people thinking Gaga is the original person to come up with it so she should mention it somewhere, even if in a tweet.

Gaga has always been really open about her influences and I haven't seen a single fan say Gaga invented it-instead, I have seen a lot of people talking about Bette and Madonna. I feel like this is sort of embarrassing for Bette especially since she has been acknowledged for this. Like, she sits on the internet and trolls for pop stars doing something similar to her and then attacks them for not announcing formal credit. She may not mean to come off that way, but that is what it feels like LOL. Can you imagine if Madonna tweeted nasty things every time a pop star did anything influenced by her? Good God. Anyway, I believe a fan even said Gaga mentioned Bette during one of the fan meetings so I don't think for a second she is trying to "steal credit" or anything. It feels like Gaga gets a bad rap for stuff that her fans and surrounding people do. She acknowledges her influences, but if one crazy fan somewhere says it is original everyone starts screaming about how Gaga rips off other people and doesn't give credit or acts like she is original. It isn't Gaga's fault that fans ignore her when she acknowledges influences all the time

That's not a good look for Bette at all. Gaga did ONE performance as a mermaid in a wheelchair, it is not as if she has taken the idea on tour with her ala Bette. It's such a shame that so many are quick to the draw when what Gaga is doing with Yuyi hasn't even come into fruition.

Bette is a legend. No one can touch her. Not even Gaga. I think Bette is just being more vocal about Gaga stealing yet someone elses schtick. You all can call it "influence" all you want but it's more than that. When I saw that video it just screamed Bette Midler. And as someone said, she should give credit where credit is due. No one probably would expect her to say anything at the beginning of the performnce and certainly not interupt it but she had ample opportunity at the end to say "Thank you that was inspired by the legendary Bette Midler." or something like that. It didn't have to be a big deal.
Some of you are so deffensive when it comes to Gaga. She can absolutely do no wrong in your opinion. Everyone else is wrong.

I'm inclined to agree. I consider myself the biggest fan of Gaga I know but it also concerns me that she's recreated something so direct such as this. It makes her such an easy target and nothing annoys me or frustrates me more lately than people being hateful or spiteful against her and having things to use. This one is pretty easy. Doing just a mermaid or just a wheelchair prop is one thing but using them together is something that has probably only been done by Bette. Not that she has a patent on it but imagine if someone started wearing a single white glove or using something from an old Cher tour that only she has done.
However, I do wonder if anyone has berated Bette for her wheelchair use.

Yeah except Gaga did wear a white glove in the Born this Way video...and she wears turn up fishnets/hose a la Cher. I don't get the hype for Bette.

You should catch it sometime. Maybe it will click. She's known more for her comedic talents but she was spectacular in that film.

It's ONE performance. One. Not 3, not 2, but 1.
Bette is looking for attention, and she got it. She's not very classy though. Maybe she should learn a thing or two from Madonna. Of course Madonna is secure in her legacy, maybe Bette isn't?
*and I'm not putting Bette's accomplishments down, I'm just saying she should feel more secure (or maybe she is doing it to grab attention, like I said)*

I don't think Bette is even mad, per say, although it's the internet and I can see how it can easily be interpreted as her bitching and moaning. Bette's sense of humor is kind of bitchy; that's her shtick. I feel like she is kind of kidding and calling her out a little at the same time. Regardless, she's putting herself out there and making herself a target.

So do you guys think that every time a pop star mimics another pop stars look they should stop a concert and announce where they got the inspiration from? That just seems strange to me. I have seen Britney, Christina, oodles other pop stars flat out wear the same outfits as people like Madonna (though many others as well) and not stop the concert or performance to formally announce it. I just figured it was obvious so why does it need to be announced?
Maybe I am overestimating how big Bette is though? Like, no one expects every pop star to stop and announce Madonna's name every concert because everyone (including Madonna) already knows. Maybe in this case Bette isn't as legendary as I consider her so credit is necessary??

I just mean something as specific as a mermaid and wheelchair combo. It's hard to make that subtle. People can easily throw the thief card out there unless gaga makes a tweet acknowledgment or something.

I don't think it was meant to be subtle though. Like, if I wore a brown robe and waved a light saber around, yet didn't formally announce I was "doing an homage" to Star Wars would people really think I was trying to be subtle and acting like I had an original idea?
I guess certain images and outfits just seem so much a part of popular consciousness that I was not aware formal spoken credit needed to be given.

If Bette is such a legend, she needs to get off of Twitter and handle it directly. Plus, I'd rather her go off on video!

Gaga performing in a wheelchair as a mermaid is like singing a cover of one Bette's songs. I think that's kinda where the difference lies. The mermaid thing is one of Bette's signature's.

This cracks me up. If it weren't for the "controversy" that GaGa stirred with this - wouldn't have even been on radar. Bette just pointing out that this isn't something new. Media only harped because GaGa. I think this response is pretty funny, in fact. It reminds me of this video when fans compare:

UGH! I'm starting to feel bad for her. Its saddening to see someone who puts so much effort into her work get torn apart over the most trivial of things. She may hype up her work and may be a little too proud of her work at times (if you can be too proud), but she's never said she was original or innovative and she has clearly acknowledged her inspirations. People need to back off.
