I think that Mine's problem is that it was a solid song but didn't tread any new ground for her. It was one of those songs that was a bit too safe.

I wouldn't say "Mine" was a GREAT first single choice. But hard to say whether or not it was the best choice without hearing the rest of the album.
But I do think it was the best out of the songs we have heard. I love SN, but a cute/funny song about interrupting a wedding would not have been a good lead-off single for a new album/era at all. And a sad ballad ("Innocent", "Back to December") probably wouldn't have been a very good choice either. But I think BTD would make a great follow-up single. It's doing amazing on iTunes. Its popularity bar is almost twice the size of the next song. And its getting a ton of press.

The Fifteen point actually makes Mine sound even worse to me. Eh. I don't think so. We're talking about a song that was following two #1 Chr/Pop hits (songs that topped several charts), had a remix serviced as soon as the song went for adds, and was released at the height of her popularity. "Mine" follows "Today Was A Fairytale" and "Fifteen", two songs that didn't exactly burn up the charts. The hype/buzz/interest for Taylor started to wear down after "Fifteen" was released and I'd say that definitely affected the performance of her latest single. It's not as if she jumped from "You Belong With Me" right into a new era. Also, let's not forget the backlash from her Grammy performance and the poor reaction (at least online) from her VMA performance. I wouldn't say "Mine" was a GREAT first single choice. But hard to say whether or not it was the best choice without hearing the rest of the album. This. Out of the songs we've heard so far, "Mine" was definitely the best choice (not to say it's my favorite of those we've heard thus far). I may change my mind when hearing the remainder of the album.

Fifteen & Today Was a Fairytale weren't lead singles, though. Lead singles are always going to have more hype than a fourth single regardless of what that fourth single is following, imo.
Out of all of the songs we've heard thus far, Mine is the only one that would have really worked for radio though.

Fifteen & Today Was a Fairytale weren't lead singles, though. Lead singles are always going to have more hype than a fourth single regardless of what that fourth single is following, imo. "Fifteen" was the third pop single, not the fourth (it was the fourth overall, but I doubt pop radio programmers were really concerned about what had been released to the country format). Also, of course lead singles are going to have more hype. I'm not trying to argue that. I'm simply saying, when compared to another song of hers that peaked at #12 on the pop format, it's selling pretty much what should be expected. I'm sure the fact that "Mine" is the lead single will help push this to two million in the end (and give "Mine" the digital advantage over "Fifteen"). BTW: I agree that "Mine" wasn't a great single choice, but it was definitely the right decision from what I've heard so far.

Well if Mine is the most pop-friendly song on the album...then I don't think we'll be hearing Taylor too much on pop radio this era lol. I don't think that it will be though.

Back to December is really good. I think this new album will be better than Fearless.

Well if Mine is the most pop-friendly song on the album...then I don't think we'll be hearing Taylor too much on pop radio this era lol. I think it will be entirely dependent on just how effective the remixes are for future singles (given they actually send out remixes properly with future releases ). One can listen to the "Tempo Mix" of "Mine" and understand just how big of a difference a remix can make (in regard to making a song more tailored for pop radio). Their best bet would be to deliver a remixed song with a strong hook (ala "You Belong With Me") to radio. Perhaps "The Story Of Us" or "Mean" could be what's needed? I have a feeling they're going to go with a ballad next and that could be tricky, especially if it's "Back To December". While I love the song, I can't see it burning up the pop charts without a really good remix. Also, while I do think focusing on pop success is important, I think focusing on country success is even more important at this point. They need to carefully choose the singles for country radio so that she is able maintain success there. Though I'm sure she'd be fine without country success, of the two (country and pop), I'd prefer she focus more on country (as they're not so fickle).

Yeah, it kind of seems to me she is focusing more on country than pop this era, which is probably a good idea. The lack of a pop mix release for Mine and the sounds of what we've heard so far supports this.

The lack of a pop mix release for Mine and the sounds of what we've heard so far supports this. Yeah. Honestly anything less than #1 will be disappointing for "Mine" on the country chart. There's no reason it shouldn't be able to make it there; it's a lead single from one of their biggest artists and it's certainly more "catchy" than a lot of other singles that hit number one on previous charts. Even still, there's a part of me that's wondering if it's going to make it (even after taking into consideration just how bipolar the chart is). Let's hope so.

It's going to be so hard not to listen to "Back to December" with all the praise it has been getting.

Ok, so "Like A G6" was removed in favor of the album version (which is currently climbing the charts again). However, even with the removal, Taylor's lead on iTunes continues to grow: Ridiculous.

out of the 3 songs i've heard from her upcoming album, Back To December gets my knockout punch.
It doesn't sound country at all though lol...she should just go with the more pop-generic genre. she can so make it with pop-rock a la YBWM.

"Mine" is a great lead single for Taylor. You can't go wrong with it. Exactly. It's as catchy as her past singles and shows growth in her lyrics. The only mistake they made was not remixing it properly to pop. I'm just happy that my station has put it on high/power rotation with their new dance mix (it doesn't sound like the Jason Nevins) one though.

Back To December wouldn't sound out of place on her debut album.I think that's why reception from fans and critics alike has been the most positive out of her 3 pre-releases.

Ladies Home Journal Catches Up With Taylor SwiftOct 12 2010 Ladies Home Journal Catches Up With Taylor Swift In anticipation of her new album, Ladies Home Journal caught up with Taylor Swift to get her answers to some interesting and fun questions. Read below for their interview with Taylor… Why I Called My Album Speak Now… My songs are like open letters. They say everything I wished I had said when certain people were standing right in front of me. I imagine I will be getting a few text messages from them once the album comes out. My album in three words… Diverse. Detailed. Relationship-y. I’m turning relationship into an adjective. My Writing Process… I have an app on my iPhone that’s a voice recorder. I’ll be in the middle of a conversation and will literally walk away and record a bridge, a pre-chorus or half of a hook, then go right back to the conversation like nothing happened. Who I’d Most Like To Collaborate With… Jay-Z. I know our genres are completely different, but there could be something cool about that. Now That I Have My Own Place… I’m most excited about throwing dinner parties and cooking for people. The other night I made this dish with chicken, penne and capers that I am so proud of. What I Took From My Parents’ House… Little teacups, a Geisha doll and a crystal ball that looks like a fortuneteller’s. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted that crystal ball — so my mom gave it to me and I let her keep one of my Grammys. My Signature Dish… Caramelized bacon. My Mom and I both make it. It’s really easy to do, but people seem to be wonderstruck by it. My Favorite Hobby… Antiquing. At the Tennessee State Fair Grounds, I found a hog carrier that I now use as a table for my record player. And I found a long animal trough that I use to store blankets. Why I Love Nashville… When I’d first visit, I was mystified that people talk to you in public, make eye contact on the street and smile at you and wave. Now, I’m addicted to that. I’ve never felt so completely like a town was home as I do here. What I’ll Do For Beauty… I really like eyeliner. One time I was waking up on a plane, it had been a long flight and I didn’t have eyeliner — so I used a Sharpie. I file that under my road warrior adventures. My Make-Up Must-Haves… CoverGirl has these outlast lip stains that I really like — I have about five in my purse. I’m always throwing my hair around on stage and if I wear sticky lip gloss, my hair gets stuck on my lips — which is a total mess. How I’ll Celebrate My 21st Birthday… Maybe I’ll have a glass of wine — but nothing too hardcore for me. I’ve never had the burning desire to drink. I need to be in control of what I say, and if I drank, I’d stress out about saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Growing Up On A Christmas Tree Farm… My Dad always liked to let me think that I was helping. So, when I was 6 he gave me the job of picking the praying mantis pods off of the Christmas trees so that they wouldn’t hatch in people’s houses. I loved it! On My Life List… Seeing my album in Starbucks. I really love Starbucks. I go there every day and I just stare longingly at the CDs they sell. I?m so envious. What I Look For In A Guy… Someone who loves you for who you are. I like doing cute art projects with glitter, and there have been guys who’ve made me feel like that’s weird. But then there are guys who find it endearing. Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition… Eating the marshmallows in the candied yams. My Hollywood Crush… Taylor Lautner. It’s always going to be Taylor. www.countrymusicislove.com/2010/10/ladies-home-journal-catches-up-with-taylor-swift.html

^thanks for the article
i think this further adds to my previous post of being a more dynamic artist:
"Who I’d Most Like To Collaborate With… Jay-Z. I know our genres are completely different, but there could be something cool about that."
YBWM and BTD are both pop rock. But it gets played on country radio because she is a "country artist." that may be a smart move in terms of reaching more masses.
Caramelized bacon...mmmm...that sounds gooddd

"Back To December" is absolutely amazing. Beautifully written. All last week I couldn't stop listening to "Speak Now" because that was so good, but BTD is even better. Both should be singles. Now I can't wait to see what else the album has in store. I really like "Mine", but the 2 digital singles are even better! "Mine" is only 10 weeks old on the country chart, and I'm not sure if it'll hit #1--not that it matters really, as the song is obviously a huge hit on multiple formats and selling well--but I'm sure it'll chart into December at least. That poses a dilemna to me! If she had a song peaking right about now, I'd release "Back To December" as the next single. I suppose it could get released in December yet, if "Mine" is done, or maybe it would wind up as the 4th or 5th single...really hard to say at this point. "Speak Now" seems like a logical choice for a single as well, but since it's more of an uptempo, I don't see it following "Mine" to finish off the winter season, so it could be that they release BTD (I definitely would love hearing that one on country radio) but I'd almost rather have them wait until next winter if there's another great ballad on the album that could be single #2 (I'm sure the album will be great!)
