Before voting, popularity based on what? Album sales? Radio spins? Tour ticket profits?

While I'm not sure that it would have been my vote, how are the Red Hot Chili Peppers NOT an option? With 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' and 'Californication' bookending the '90s, they are certainly more important to the '90s alt/rock scene than more than half the bands on this list, and might have been my knee-jerk vote for the top spot. I mean seriously, Megadeth is a choice but RHCP isn't?
I guess of the choices though, despite me not liking Nirvana, they get my vote based on the question that's being asked.

No Tool? This list is garbage.

My vote goes to Pearl Jam. Ten and Vitalogy are two of the best albums of the '90s.

Overall, I'd say Pearl Jam.
It can be argued Nirvana's posthumous legacy eclipsed Pearl Jam's popularity during the latter half of the nineties, but I'm basing my vote on commercial activity, and though it's close, Pearl Jam gets it in my view over Nirvana as they were consistently active during the decade while Nirvana's activity was limited to the first half of the decade.
Metallica undoubtedly had some success during this decade, but it was less consistent than during the eighties. Same can be said with Green Day (who claimed world domination with "Dookie" but then leveled off significantly beyond the Modern Rocks chart as the decade went on) with Aerosmith (whose ballads clogged up the airwaves during the first half of the decade but then faded in popularity during the second half with "Nine Lives" onward) and U2 (who were juggernauts during the first half of the decade, but collapsed with "Pop" before triumphantly coming back, again, at the turn of the century).

RATM and Bush I both forgot as well. Looking at this poll, it's looks like my first post about the early 90's. Metallica and Nirvana leading the poll. I don't know if you consider Metallica more 80's or 90's. They got bigger in the 90's but the 80's albums were more like and only the black album sold more then them(RIT MOP AJFR).

Don't be a asshole or anything. Anyway I would say Tool is more of a 00's band than a 90's one.

True, although both of the albums that came out in the 00s both hit number one and had big hits. The same could be said for Radiohead as well.

Don't be a asshole or anything. I'm being a smartass because you post this vague poll with 30(!) choices, admit to forgetting about 5 bands that would arguably be in the Top 10 (if not Top 5), answer your own question by dividing it into 3 sub-categories, and just state your choices with no explanation or reasoning behind any of them, or the criteria, for that matter. It just seems like this poll was accidentally launched during the developmental stage.

Nicholas: Here are the current tallies for the Tool albums you wanted to know about: When did I ever ask for this information ??? By the way, Opiate is an EP, not an album.

I know it's an EP. I call EP's Albums as well. Even though it's not technically correct.
Still the point is they are a 90's band. Opiate came out in 1992 and there Demo Tape came out in 91.

Early 90's was dominated by Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Skid Row & Poison until Nirvana & Pearl Jam, then the mid 90s was Green Day,STP and Pearl Jam then the last few years of the 90s was all about Matchbox Twenty and Creed........ :)

I think it's between Pearl Jam and Metallica. I'll go with Pearl Jam because they seemed to be a little more popular at the time.
