I think people focus too much on lyrics anyway when deciding that a song is good or bad. This. I think that trend is slowly fading though thankfully. Production is gaining more and more importance in the public eye.

Summer of '69 is one of the best songs of all time...
I've said many times that I think California Gurls is a terrible song. I can forgive bad lyrics in a song that isn't supposed to be anything but fun, but that song isn't even fun to listen to (whereas I Gotta Feeling, London Bridge, and All I Wanna Do all accomplished exactly what they were hoping for despite lyrics in the range of mediocre to total crap). Just my opinion though; I understand that a lot of people really dig CG.

Dumb list. "California Gurls" and "London Bridge" are pretty much the only songs that deserve to be on there. Al lot of the other songs are classics.
Obviously, this guy doesn't even know what "Summer of 69" is actually about.

^ "Summer Girls" is a classic? :) I'd say that's one of the worst songs period, for any season.

If you don't like f**king "My Sharona" you don't understand music? If you can't understand what makes it work so well as a pop hit, you don't understand music. But how does that make it a good song?

I've always found lyrical content to be held too high up on a pedestal while sonic qualities have been underrated.

I agree. My mother always says, "Who cares about the lyrics? I like the beat!"
And she's a woman who started listening to music in the 50s.

Then you two are pretty shallow people and do not understand the music. At least now I understand why so many people listen to such a shitty music. I also like some shitty songs, but only LIKE them, I am aware they are bad and shitty.

So much anger in this thread. People don't "not understand music" because they have different taste to you. They can like whatever they want for whatever reason. I know personally I'm more inclined towards songs with a great beat and crap lyrics than crap music with great lyrics.

Yeah, they focus too much on the lyrics of the songs. Of course the lyrics of I Gotta Feeling are dumb but the music that backs it up is what makes the song. I think people focus too much on lyrics anyway when deciding that a song is good or bad. The music is sort of what makes it annoying instead of just tedious though. JANG .....JANG .....JANG .....JANG BUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUM Drives me up the wall every time it comes on. You've got to be kidding?!? Wow. just wow. I'm not. Absolutely not. I've always found lyrical content to be held too high up on a pedestal while sonic qualities have been underrated. Are you saying lyrical expression is unimportant? In this day and age?

Yeah, if I'm at the club and I want to grind with someone, I'm hoping for a song about partying and grinding.

I like 4 of the songs on that list, including "All I Wanna Do".

Lists like this don't really mean much, but it is cool that at least it gets a discussion going about being passionate about what a song means to someone.

The Black Eyed Peas weren't trying to be Bob Dylan with "I Gotta Feeling", they were trying to make a fun party song. I actually think that song has perfect lyrics for what they were trying to achieve and it's the choice of words that made it the definitive party song of 2009.

Eh? Music is entertainment. I'd like to know what you think music is if not entertainment? Maybe I don't understand music after all.

*sigh* I didn't say music isn't entertainment. I said it also has other purposes, and it's selfish to wish people would not start discussion of aspects they enjoy and he does not.

You've got to be kidding?!? Wow. just wow. I'm not. Absolutely not. I've always found lyrical content to be held too high up on a pedestal while sonic qualities have been underrated. Seriously. To be honest, I care a lot more about the melody and production of a song than the lyrics. Does that mean I am 'a shallow person who doesn't understand the music,' worldwide? ???

I'm genuinely interested. and it's selfish to wish people would not start discussion of aspects they enjoy and he does not. So you can see why people are finding your posts frustrating then.

To educate, to communicate things which could not be said sans repercussions in another medium or which are not expressed as effectively in another medium, to forge a common bond amongst individuals or groups, for ceremonial purposes, et al.

Yeah, but those are all conditional imo, and they're somewhat extensions of being entertained. The primary purpose of music is entertainment.

How the hell isn't "I Gotta Feeling" #1?! It has to be the worst thing (I won't even call it a song) ever made in terms of music.
Also, the list had to have something from Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Sean Kingston, at least...
