Like I've said, I have no doubt that "Smile" would have more than likely made the Top Ten if his label didn't screw the release strategy up by having the digital release well precede the radio release to one format, then have its crossover push to Top 40 well follow its peak at Hot AC radio, then have its push to Country and AC radio well follow its disappearance from Top 40 radio.

"Smile" may be one of the largest hits in recent memory that, on paper, deceptively doesn't look like a hit at all. Interestingly enough, this could be compared to his pal Kid Rock's "All Summer Long".........on paper a #23 Billboard Hot 100 peak looks underwhelming to anyone who determines success solely by peaks on the aforementioned chart, but it was entirely off of airplay and digital sales weren't factored into it at all due to Kid Rock's strong stance against making his discography available on iTunes. If Kid Rock's stance were the contrary, "All Summer Long" definitely would have been Top Five, and I think most likely would have went #1 due to the impeccable timing and that, in addition to dominating the usual suspect formats of Hot AC, AC and Top 40 Mainstream, he also stormed the Country chart, where audience impressions really stack up.

"Smile" has the exact same multi-format appeal "All Summer Long" did. The problem is, his label hasn't done nearly as effectively a job promoting the single like Kid Rock's was.

His label had probably written him
off some time ago. I don't think anyone was thinking "hit" when they released Smile. Kinda like Hey Soul Sister, I think that song clicked as it picked up steam, but the label certainly wasn't expecting big things from it. Unfortunately, unlike Train, Smile took too long to click out of the gate and was palmed off from format to format having no chance to capitalize on any digital sales spikes.

Exactly. That's what I was getting at when I said I wished we could get a complete Digital Songs chart like this... with some songs, there's not a huge difference. With others, it's enough to be annoying.

It wasnt released on my itunes and i couldn't find it on there before the release date so 8,196. I don't know how i missed not being in the first 70. I was looking everyday up till the 20th when it was released.

Because there are more than one versions of songs in most cases.

For example theres probably the Need You Now - Single, The Album Version, and if there is a deluxe album version that as well.

For example Eminem's "Not Afraid" and "Love The Way You Lie".

There are four versions of "Not Afraid" and three versions of "Love The Way You Lie"

Not Afraid - Single, Regular Edition, Deluxe Edition, Clean Edition.

Love The Way You Lie - Regular Edition, Deluxe Edition, Clean Edition.

EDIT:

I just checked NEED YOU NOW at iTunes and there is so many versions i don't feel like counting them all.

Single, Album, Now Thats What I Call Music, Piano Single, Dance Remix. And those are just some of them.
