I think HDD is just trying to drum up the numbers.

I have to agree with Noah. I happen to like Teenage Dream and I think it will do really well, but I never understood why so many thought it would have this huge opening week. Hype and buzz doesn't always equate to a huge first week. Now, I think TD will have great longevity and sell well through the holidays, but I see an opening of around 180k at best.
I really like the album, so I wouldn't mind being wrong.

^Katy's digital sales will be much higher than Fantasia's, though. HDD was reporting only phyical retail stores sales, right? HDD did not give any actual numbers. When HITS does its building album sales chart, it counts all sales.

yeah, HDD is not reporting anything, they simply said that Fantasia's album is "performing better than expected at retail"
The comparison to katy Perry is a teaser statement and does not necessarily mean that Fantasia will be #1 next week.

Billboard says:
• Eminem will likely relinquish the No. 1 position next week to Katy Perry's new "Teenage Dream." Released yesterday (Aug. 24), industry prognosticators suggest that the set will likely sell in the range of 170,000 to 200,000 by week's end on Aug. 29. Beleaguered former "American Idol" champ Fantasia is seeking a big week too. Her third set, "Back to Me," is on track for a sturdy No. 2 debut with a number in the range of 150,000 to 175,000.

"When I See U" was a HUGE Urban hit last time around and her profile has only increased since then. I'm not surprised her album is exceeding expectations. If anything, her reality show is probably the main catalyst for her sales. Just like Monica.

The unfortunate suicide attempt probably helped raise her profile. I don't think her VH1 show is a huge ratings hit or anything. What did her last album open with?

Her VH1 show averaged 1.2 million viewers. Her last album opened with 133,000 in the #19 spot. It was released during the Christmas season.

It was big enough hit for VH1 to give her a second season. So they must be happy with it's ratings.

I think HDD is just trying to drum up the numbers. Seems like HDD was right. The #s are only about 20,000 albums off.

^ Np.
On the bright side, Katy's last album also had a huge #1 lead single but only managed 47,000 (#9) in its first week.

Well "I Kissed A Girl" isn't exactly a single that drives people to the record stores. Neither is "California Gurls" if you think about it. They both sound like novelties, good for the season and fading away soon after.

^ Yes but regardless, it's a considerable improvement and hopefully an indicator that Katy's developing a bigger album-buying fanbase.

Monica didn't sell a lot of albums either in the long run

I was expecting this to drop off after their tour ended. I guess not.

It's too bad he's not seeing more of a surge.
