Not everyone disliked Janet Jackson's SuperBowl performance, in fact, some may have liked it.
Even if that wasn't true, the public tends to forgive celebrities quickly for 1-day news items where they create a spectacle of themselves.
Chris Brown, for example, still charts regularly

Janet's single was having big gains on radio before the Super Bowl, then sank like a rock.
But, her material post-Super Bowl has not exactly been stellar.

I think we are putting way too much emphasis on a single one day event. It wasn't in the news more than a couple days. Those that were outraged enough by it to burn all their Janet Jackson CDs probably have forgotten or don't care.
Celebrities get in trouble all the time and come back to live another day.
There are numerous examples.
Anyway, just an opinion, I don't tend to believe Janet's career spiraled downward because of the Super Bowl.
Age and time in spotlight prior - it was her time anyway.
Didn't Justin Timberlake have a monster album a couple years after the Super Bowl. he was in that performance too, no?
Justin Timberlake - much younger
Anyway - just a thought

What'chu talkin' about, PTB? The label officially released "Just a Little While" to radio the morning after the Super Bowl (Feb. 2, 2004). It bubbled under for the 2/14 chart, based on early airplay and then debuted on the 2/21/04 Hot 100 chart. I agree that her material since has not been among her best- the decline occurred thanks to a combination of factors. (The incident did lead to ongoing repercussions for the NFL, but that's another matter). Back to 2011, y'all. :) Madonna's single is rumored to debut before the SB.

A world class entertainer, singer, songwriter, producer, director, and video visionary, Madonna has sold more than 300 million records in the course of her three-decade career as The Material Girl. She is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Her last tour was the most successful tour by a solo artist in history. Someone must be fuming right now

JALW was the wrong lead single choice anyway. It should have been All Nite.

I actually have no issue with the Janet discussion in itself, but it's now derailing ALL discussion about the topic of this thread. There must be an Opinions thread or two that can be pulled up if we must argue about what really killed Janet's career.

CNN's current poll question is "Is Madonna a good choice as the Super Bowl halftime act?" 68% of people voted no.

^I'm not surprised. And if you saw the comments on the 'real' sports blogs and sites, they're even more overwhelmingly against it.
I think they need to get some younger acts in there. But I also know that the NFL would never have any rap acts perform on their halftime shows.lol

I don't see the problem with her performing. I think it's the demographics of the people watching the Super Bowl.

It does fit with the older acts theme they have had in recent years with the exception of last year's Black Eyed Peas and the 'Tron'-dancers show which didn't seem to fit.

Kinda silly to ask if it's a good choice. It's a legendary performer, who's still at the top of her performance game, is a revered act and has a good-sized catalog of classic material- how could that be anything but a good choice? :) As with anything, can't please everyone.

She's a woman, a big reason so many on those blogs are against her. I bet they didn't complain when Prince performed.

LOL - all this sounds very objective and unbiased. Anyway, a popular 80s artist that would pull in th emiddle aged crowd and an artist still popular with the young'ns should appeal to a wide audience. The CNN poll shouldn't carry a lot of weight. That is not very accurate as to what the true % should be

That could be part of it, PTB. The halftime show has not been a single female act since Diana Ross in 1996. And, big-name acts started doing the halftime show in the early 90s (there was Chubby Checker in 1988, but...).

Janet didnt' remove them herself if you believe the video showing Justin exposing Janet's breast.

Last night on Conan he mentioned this in his monologue, all the women in the audience cheered and all the men booed.

Janet's career post-superbowl had nothing to do with the superbowl Her time on top, even by then had long since passed. I think it had everything to do with her Super Bowl performance. I guarantee Madonna paid attention and will not do anything controversial. She's a fool if she does.

It's not even a matter of whether Madonna would want to or not- I'm sure the NFL made known what would be acceptable and what would not.

Because this is the Super Bowl, not the American Music Awards. That said, there have been plenty of Super Bowl half-time performers that didn't appeal to the NFL crowd. The half-time show brings in plenty of viewers who wouldn't normally tune in (Hi gays!), and in that sense, it serves a purpose.

Exactly, and it's not surprising coming from sports fans (not saying all of them are misogynist but some are). Madonna is also associated with gay culture which of course is not something sport culture encourages. She's a strong woman who does not give a fuck and does not do what she is told...that frightens some people.

It may be shocking to some, but there actually are some gay people who like football- I know, tough to fathom.

This is just like the whole "everyone hates Nickelback" but then they sell millions...and just like that petition to get them not to play the halftime show Thanksgiving this year and their album was almost the #1 in the country. Anyone they get to play the Super Bowl halftime show will be met with "OMG HORRIBLE" while there are millions who will enjoy it.

The flack Madonna is getting is kinda understandable, or at least not surprising I should say. I am surprised to see popular media figures chiming in with some of the hate though.
