Rumors started swirling in early October, and it's now been officially confirmed. There was a thread announcing Black Eyed Peas last year, so why the heck not one for Her Madgesty? :) www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d824bf8ea/article/super-bowl-xlvi-halftime-show-will-feature-madonnaSuper Bowl XLVI Halftime show will feature MadonnaNational Football League Published: Dec. 4, 2011 at 10:16 p.m. Updated: Dec. 4, 2011 at 10:31 p.m. Madonna, a multi Grammy Award-winning Universal Records recording artist, will perform in the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show on NBC on Sunday, Feb. 5, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the NFL and NBC announced at halftime of Sunday night's game between the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions. Madonna's performance will be imagined by Cirque Du Soleil and Jamie King. The Bridgestone Super Bowl halftime show is the most-watched musical event of the year. More than 162 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year's show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide. Madonna joins an esteemed list of recent halftime acts that includes The Black Eyed Peas, The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2. A world class entertainer, singer, songwriter, producer, director, and video visionary, Madonna has sold more than 300 million records in the course of her three-decade career as The Material Girl. She is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Her last tour was the most successful tour by a solo artist in history. Madonna is currently in the recording studio working on a new album scheduled to be released next year. Her new film W.E., which she directed, wrote and produced, is opening in a limited one-week release Dec. 9 in Los Angeles and will open nationally on Feb. 3, two days prior to Super Bowl XLVI. Madonna has partnered with a creative team from Cirque du Soleil, Jamie King, and multimedia artists from Moment Factory, to create a signature performance for the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show. This year marks the fifth time Bridgestone Americas has sponsored the Super Bowl halftime show. The tire company's new brand campaign, fittingly titled "Time to Perform," will debut during the game. The Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show is an NFL Network production and will be executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton. The commercial:

This usually is something that interests people, regardless of who it is, no? It's not often that rumors begin that early in advance of an official announcement- but most of the halftime acts- some of which were legendary- haven't been THIS big, so no wonder there was an early buzz. Looks like she and Universal (which I believe will distribute the album) may pull out all the stops for this release. Fifty-three-year-old's gotsa stay relevant, after all.

^I know. ;)
No offense to the Peas, but they're rather out of place in that list of mentioned halftime performers (and not just because it's a more recent, younger act than the others). "I Gotta Feeling" was a fitting universal track for the event, though.
Will we hear some "Holiday"? "Like a Prayer"? "Ray of Light"? "Music"? Those are usually good for these large events. And, of course, the new single.

Not to mention, I think the general consensus is that they were pretty much a borefest this year. Ready to see the Queen slay'em.

Most real sports fans don't care about these halftime shows. They are there for the game and the commercials. Regardless who performs at the SB, it will achieve enormous ratings. But the NFL likes to mass market and bring in people who normally wouldn't be watching especially those fans of those performers.

I was one of the very few people that seemed to enjoy BEP's performance last year, despite my overall dislike of them. I felt like their music was perfect for the huge party atmosphere. Fergie sounded off, but the performance itself was entertaining. So I can't complain.
Madonna this year? I wonder what she'll be performing.

the SB is known to have artists way past their prime perform at halftime so why not Madonna. I definitely will not be watching the halftime show this year. who wants to see a dirty, old 60 year old still grinding trying to be sexy. ich.

I'd much rather watch a spirited, rousing performance that fits the thundering, hedonistic atmosphere in a large venue than a more nostalgic act that ultimately plucks your heartstrings in that it's like saying hello to a long lost friend that only bids farewell twelve minutes later, and leaves you lamenting how much music has changed over the years to the point you're crying in your beer by the end. Black Eyed Peas may stick out awkwardly in that list, but they really were a fitting choice for the halftime show, love or hate them overall. Much of their music makes up the soundtrack to a positive party scene, and that's exactly what the Super Bowl halftime show attempts to harness year after year. Madonna...............will be an interesting one to see. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

I think she'll definitely do some version of "Music" as it really works well in such performances (e.g. at Live 8 with that extended audience sing-along). And that "Like A Prayer/Feels Like Home" mashup would be absolutely epic, especially coupled with the Cirque Du Soleil stuff too. I could see her doing a medley of her 80's hits.

Judging by her reverence and success, I'd say plenty want to see a 53-year-old wow viewers and work the stage like few others- whether she's grinding or not. A medley is possible, DC- if she did that, would be the first time, I think. I imagine we'll see some sort of re-entry for The Immaculate Collection or Celebration.

Most real sports fans don't care about these halftime shows. Yes, we do. It's all part of the Superbowl experience and festiveness of it. Did you know that people who will be hosting a SB party are planning it already? It's a big deal, especially to people who follow the NFL. The game...the commericals...the half-time show....the food.....the beer!!......the friendships!! It should be declared a holiday! This year will be extra special to me! I am very excited! Great Article, HG....The R&R Hall of Famer will be in all her glory that day!! Too f*cking excited.

I don't think anyone can speak for all "real sports fans"- some may like watching the halftime shows, some may not. Like anything else. And of course there are people who plan parties and make a big party day/night out of it- even those who aren't big sports fans. It's just another excuse to party. florida- you should have a respirator on standby to contain your excitement.

I like BEP and their songs are great but they put up a really bad performance they r not a live band. It was more about smoke and mirrors around them. They were just singling and they dont know how to sing i guess they use auto-tunes on fergies voice in studio I do however give them great credit for not lip -syncing i hope madonna doesnt lip sync that wont be nice. And it would then be possible to compare her performance with other ground breaking performances of recent yrs

It is about the experience of the event called the Super Bowl Even vegas gets into the act by allowing bets on things that have nothing to do with the outcome. Now the AFC and NFC championships. Those are just football games.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what she performs. Hopefully her vocals will be good. As we all know, she will be nervous.

^I imagine the NFL had some talks with her about that. :) In recent years, she's had some moments, but on the whole, she is nowhere near as button-pushing as she once was. Now, there probably would have been a problem had she performed, say, between the years of 1985-1994.

Hope she pulls a controversial stunt or something! I hope not considering how Janet's career has been doing post-Superbowl. I can't wait for this though! Especially after the awful Whack Eyed Peas last year.

Janet's career post-superbowl had nothing to do with the superbowl
Her time on top, even by then had long since passed.

^Well, the prior album was a triple-platinum album (not her peak, but still decently successful). The SB may have impacted that particular Damita Jo project to some degree, but I believe it has little to do with her commercial performance thereafter. But, that's here nor there.
Wonder when they plan to release Madonna's album- probably sometime in March. Ideally would be late January/early February, but that's too soon with no official announcement, so March looks more likely.

Age 37 by the time of the 2004 SuperBowl. 18 years since the Control album
Most other 80s artists, including Madonna had cooled by then as well

Exactly and an appearance in a controversial Super Bowl performance has nothing to do with it. The decline was happening anyway

The decline was happening, but let's not act like the SB performance didn't impact her career in any way. If anything it sped up her decline.
