The flack Madonna is getting is kinda understandable, or at least not surprising I should say. I am surprised to see popular media figures chiming in with some of the hate though. Popular media figures always slate Madonna, it's nothing new.

I just hope Madonna slays, otherwise she'll be heavily criticized the day after.

Not everyone disliked Janet Jackson's SuperBowl performance, in fact, some may have liked it. You're talking about everything up to the final 5 seconds right? Because, as good as it was, who the heck really remembers it besides a handful of fans. Yes she was on a decline, but the SB put the nail in the coffin. Her "#1's Personal Tour" (or whatever it's called) has been the first time there's been significant interest in Janet. I wish her well. Madonna is going to Rock this thing!

Can you imagine if they'd picked Lady Gaga?lol I wonder if she's just too outrageous for the NFL. She might pull some crazy stunt that was unexpected. Although I'm sure she will be doing a SB halftime show in the future, perhaps in 2014 when it's in New Jersey? Perfect area for her and it's going to be outside in freezing February temperatures.lol

^LOL Okaaayyy. Now we know there are others that most would say are worse singers than Madge- some of who are among my favorites. I mean, really, now. In any event, it's not vocal prowess that's made her one of the most acclaimed and important acts of all time. She's the full package, which sets her apart from most anyone else- Madonna and The Rest. She more than likely will deliver- if she's as effective as she was at another large event (say, Live 8), it's gonna be a memorable appearance.

Exactly. The only singer worse than Jennifer Lopez and they manage to get her to perform the 2012 SB XLVI. Nah! I think Janet and Britney have her beat! As a supporter/ consumer of all four vocally challenged females I would say madonna technically has the most range...jlo has the least. Don't shade Janet or Britney when they have more range. 1) madonna...I believe after evita her background singer said she can go up to 3 octaves 2) Britney...between two to three octaves...can hit notes better than just regular singing which is often well.. I won't 3) Janet Jackson...between two to three octaves...regular singing voice is better than her hitting notes...still better than jlo 4) Jennifer lopez...her range is barely above the average person.its thin but she makes the most out of it just like the other three. Anyways, I look forward to the performance and hope that she can do a medley before getting into her new song... Would love...get into the groove, like a prayer, express your self ( maybe intro born this way to spark controversy and throw shade), ray of light, either music/don't tell me. That will cover 80s 90s 00s and then get into the song with nicki and mia.

A number of articles out there. Will post some: www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/madonna-super-bowl-halftime-269732Madonna Performing at Super Bowl: What the Pundits are Saying12/5/2011 by The Hollywood Reporter Staff The pop icon will collaborate with Cirque du Soleil for the February show, which so far is drawing mixed reactions around the web. Madonna will hit the world's biggest stage in February as the halftime performer at the Super Bowl show. The news, which had been widely rumored for some time but was officially confirmed during NBC's Sunday Night Football coverage, sparked mixed reactions among viewers and pundits alike, with many sports experts weighing in on the news during their respective programs. On ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning, Mike Golic questioned the last time Madge had released new music, apparently unaware that the singer is in the midst of recording a new album to be released in 2012. “I’ve not been happy with a whole lot of them,” Golic said regarding past Super Bowl performers including Paul McCartney, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and the Who. “Feel free to get someone in the now.” Tim Daniels, a featured blogger for the Bleacher Report, said, “It’s just another safe selection by executive who fear what could happen if they allow a more edgy act to take the stage.” “You have to wonder how long the NFL will continue to trot out musicians who no longer capture the audiences attention. Even though ratings are terrific, that’s only because it’s on during the middle of the marquee football game of the season,” he continued. “If NFL Network productions gave the fans what they want, which is anybody with current relevance, the ratings would be markedly better. But they seem content with taking the easy way out.” “Counting Madonna, the avg age of the Super Bowl halftime performers since the ‘Wardrobe Malfunction’ is 54.8 years old,” tweeted CNBS sports business reporter Darren Rovell. ESPN enlisted the opinion of rock historian John Covach and branding strategist Adam Hanft to weigh in on the NFL’s choice. “Madonna is somebody who crosses age generations and crosses sex barriers. She’s just somebody who the whole world wants to see. She’s really a living legend,” Covach said. “Yes, of course, people are going to jump up and down to watch her. It’s not just a performer. She is bigger than, perhaps, anybody alive.” “People have joked online, maybe a larger gay audience will come,” added Hanft. “There are broad segments of the audience that she appeals to.” At 53-years-old, the singer is being labeled as a “safe” choice for the NBC program, which has repeatedly opted for less controversial performers since Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s 2004 wardrobe malfunction. Ironically, the “Vogue” singer was known primarily for pushing boundaries in the early years of her career, including burning crosses in her “Like a Prayer” video and publishing a book of nude photos called Sex. In 2003, the singer swapped saliva with Britney Spears during a performance on the MTV Video Music Awards. “If this doesn’t show you that everyone is out to make a buck I’m not sure what does,” reads a post on the Backyard Sports Blog. “Madonna has a movie coming out two days before the game and also has a new album set to release in 2012. At some point in my lifetime they need to bring these things to vote and let the fans choose.” ESPN sports reporter Michael Smith joked on Twitter, “Did the BCS select the Super Bowl halftime entertainment?” Married to sportswriter and producer Max Handelman, avid Fantasy Football fan Elizabeth Banks noted her excitement for the upcoming show. “Madonna plus football, obviously. I, for one, just got more excited for Feb 5,” she wrote. “WOW! Madonna is performing at Halftime of the Superbowl…too bad I won’t be able to watch her. *wink*” posted San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner. Madonna will collaborate with Cirque du Soleil for the performance, which will air live from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Feb. 5. In an interview with Extra -- prior to the big announcement -- Madge had said, “It’s a huge deal, my God. To be as exciting as the football game is a huge challenge. And to get your stage set up in eight minutes, another huge challenge.” -------------------------------------------------------- www.hitfix.com/blogs/the-beat-goes-on/posts/5-steps-to-a-perfect-madonna-superbowl-halftime-show5 Steps to a perfect Madonna Superbowl Halftime showBy Melinda Newman Monday, Dec 5, 2011 4:42 PM As had been long rumored, Madonna is indeed performing at Super Bowl XLVI's half-time show Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. Both the NFL and superstar confirmed the Material Girl’s appearance Sunday night. What do we know? We know that she is collaborating with a team from Cirque du Soleil, so we can expect some wildly inventive and weird acrobatics to keep everyone entertained. She’s also partnering with Moment Factory, a company that produces multimedia events in strange spaces, whether it be outdoors or between buildings. A number of folks have commented that Madonna’s audience hardly matches up with the typical football fan, but that’s the point. Look at past performers like Black Eyed Peas. This is the most watched event in the world. The producers know they have the football fans locked up; they need someone who brings in the rest of the globe. While the halftime show needs to look good for the 80,000 fans in the stadium, it is really meant for those of us sitting on our couches on our 12th beer and third plate of nachos. The actual performance time for the artist is 12 minutes. Yep, that’s it. Here’s how we’d like to see Madonna spend her dozen minutes in front of billions of people. Assume these songs are trimmed so she can get them all in. 1) Open with “Give Me All Your Love,” the peppy, '80s-ish track that leaked a few weeks ago. The song starts with the sound of cheerleaders spelling out “L-U-V, Madonna, Y-O-U,” so it's perfect for a sporting event. Now there are rumors that Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. could be on the final version of the song, so they could join to get things started with some high voltage. 2) With the new song out of the way, Madonna should go straight for the highest-energy hits to keep the crowd going and to prove that this 53-year old can still kick any 22-year old’s ass to the curb when it comes to dominating a stage. Remind everyone how it’s done. Segue into “Express Yourself.” Sure it’s old, but it’s still a goody and it can keep the crowd on its feet. Man, you don’t realize how many ballads Madge has had until you go through her greatest hits and try to pick the uptempo ones. (Speaking of ballads, a new Madonna track, "Masterpiece," leaked out today. The swaying, gentle ballad is reported to be on both the "W.E." soundtrack and on the new album. Hear it here. 3) Go into “Vogue” and bring back Minaj. It’s mid-point and the idea is to build and crest, build and crest. This is the first point to catch her breath, but show off the dance that everyone knows. Have a flash mob in the field who can do the “Vogue” arm movements. It's cheesy, but it will look good. 4) Move into “Ray of Light.” It’s frenetic so it will start another build, and it also lends itself to all kinds of bells and whistles and special lighting effects. 5) Close with “Like a Prayer,” Bring the ravers down a little bit, and close with something that eventhe football fans know. It’s very dramatic and it also can get the whole stadium clapping as she takes us there. Bring in the requisite choir and turn Lucas Oil Stadium into the world's biggest church.

Cute article: www.albertleatribune.com/2011/12/10/madonna%E2%80%99s-songs-are-perfect-for-football/Madonna’s songs are perfect for footballPublished Saturday, December 10, 2011 By Alexandra Kloster, Pass the Hot Dish Madonna and controversy, two great tastes that taste great together. Extreme reaction has followed Madonna since she stepped onto the dance floor at “American Bandstand” in 1984 and told Dick Clark she wanted to rule the world. Some loathe her, some love her, but few land in between. No sooner was it announced this week that Madonna would perform at the halftime show for Super Bowl XLVI than the predictable backlash began. The Internet, home of the hostile response, blew up with charges that Madonna was too old for the gig and said she was a has-been. Maybe she is too old. She’s 53 after all, and the NFL is known for booking names that are fresh and new. Look at the youthful roster of halftime acts from 2005-2010: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and The Who. What do you get when you add them all together? A pack of the greatest rock legends of all time and a full table at Denny’s at 5 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon. I admit Madonna is a has-been. She has been famous longer than most marriages last. She has been selling out giant arenas throughout the world for nearly 30 years, and for decades she has been able to stay relevant in a culture with an attention span of about 10 minutes. She has been able to do that and a lot more. Many people don’t realize that Madonna’s dedicated a substantial portion of her body of work to football, making her the most logical choice for the Super Bowl halftime show. I, for one, am surprised that she wasn’t snapped up for the job long before this. Early in her career she wrote the song “Borderline,” originally titled “Encroachment, 5 Yards”, about those special players who love the game so much they can’t help jumping off sides every other play. She showed she understood their struggle with the lyrics, “Something in your eyes is makin’ such a fool of me … Borderline feels like I’m going to lose my mind … Keep on pushing me baby/Don’t you know you drive me crazy?” In “4 Minutes” Madonna shined a light on the importance of good clock management. She sang, “I’m outta time and all I got is four minutes … I want somebody to speed it up for me then take it down slow … Tick tock tick tock tick tock.” Rumor has it Rex Ryan made Mark Sanchez put that one on his iPod. No song ever captured the wonder of a successful Hail Mary pass the way “Like a Prayer” did. Every quarterback who ever closed his eyes and hurled the ball toward the end zone with one second on the clock and a wish on his lips recognized the power in the lyrics, “Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery/Just like a dream, you are not what you seem/Just like a prayer …” Ask Tommy Kramer. He’ll tell you. Perhaps the most poignant ode to football Madonna ever recorded was “Take a Bow” about the life of the lonely kicker. I can’t listen to “Take a bow the night is over … You deserve an award for the role that you played … you’re one lonely star” without tearing up a little. There are so many others, “Express Yourself” about the injustice of excessive celebration penalties, “Material Girl” which was resurrected earlier this year during the NFL lockout, and “Who’s That Girl?” a scathing commentary on last year’s Brett Farvre scandal. Finally, who could forget Madonna’s take on the partnership between a quarterback and his star receiver, “Causing a Commotion”? What describes this unique relationship better than, “I’ve got the moves baby, you got the motion/If we got together we’d be causing a commotion”? Yes, Madonna has Charles Atlas arms and, yes, she speaks with an accent that sounds like she was born on a ship headed to nowhere, but she’s strong. She doesn’t let her detractors define her. When she’s knocked down she always gets back up, and when she succeeds she acts like she’s been there before. That reminds me a lot of a game I know. Yeah, it’s football. The NFL finally got it right. They chose someone who never says die and who is as tough as every player on the field. Woodbury resident Alexandra Kloster appears each Sunday. She may be reached at alikloster@yahoo.com, and her blog is Radishes at Dawn at alexandrakloster.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And this is great, if only because, isn't this what's been discussed for the last 20-odd years, each time she has a new project coming out? :) (Of course, Billboard's list was for the most successful act, but of course she'd also be near the top of most important) www.impre.com/la-gente-dice/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978912395Dec. 10, 2011 Is Madonna Really Washed Up or a Has-been?The NFL's choice to pick up the Queen of Pop for the Super Bowl halftime show has already stirring controversy. Piers Morgan isn't the only one who disagrees with this choice, and he even takes the time to tweet about it. The bitter TV host is apparently still mad at the popstar for some things that happened back in the 90s. Like Morgan himself who's still stuck in the past, many people would love to see Madonna with no career, no success at all and maybe doing drugs or getting into trouble every three months. Yes, they are even calling her a "has-been"! Is she really a washed-up singer? The legendary pop icon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and one of her latest singles -'4 Minutes' ft. Justin Timberlake- broke an all-time record in USA, placing her as the act with most top ten hits ever. According to Billboard, Madonna is the most important solo act in history, second only to The Beatles. This is just the tip of the iceberg: Madonna is the pop star by whom any other new singers is measured by. The Super Bowl halftime show has featured in the past some of the biggest names in the industry: Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Janet Jackson, just to name a few. So it's a logical decision to pick up the biggest name in the female pop scene for 2012. Maybe Madonna laughs every time she reads those headlines; maybe it's also time to remember that her name appears in the 2011 Guinness Book of Records as the most successful and highest selling female recording artist ever. Pretty good for a "has-been", isn't it? Don't give her a hard time: she must be getting ready and working 24/7 to deliver a unique performance. She is one of the greatest entertainers ever, with or without controversy. Could those critics stop all that jealousy and just dance along to "Holiday", "Like a Virgin", "Hung Up" or "Vogue"? Maybe giving her some credit for being a smart woman in control of her life and career would be enough. But... hey! Who cares about what they might think or not anyway?

Interscope has confirmed that the first single is being released the week before the Super Bowl. That means the sales effect the performance has will coincide with it's *2nd* week of official airplay, so it should at least have like 20 million aud imp built up and that's if the lead single fares like HU and not 4M at US radio. Regardless of what Madonna will be focused on, Universal wants that Hot 100 #1.

When it debuted on Hot 100 Airplay, "Hung Up" registered 15.5m audience (BDS); I believe "4 Minutes" had close to 30 million. Wonder if Interscope will release the single digitally the week leading up to SB, or the day after.

^No- peak airplay for "4 Minutes" was around 54 million (No. 11 on Hot 100 Airplay), in its 7th week on the chart.
bruce, when I said "closer to 30m," I meant that I knew it was higher than 20m. :) I just checked, and it debuted at No. 51 on Hot 100 Airplay for its first full week- that was probably around 24-25m BDS audience. I believe when it moved 51-41 in its second week, it had some 31 million, because it then gained 6m- in its third week (to around 37.3m).
