www.forbes.com/sites/zackomalleygreenburg/2012/02/03/why-madonna-isnt-getting-paid-for-her-super-bowl-halftime-gig/Why Madonna Isn't Getting Paid For Her Super Bowl Halftime GigMadonna released the song “Material Girl” in 1985, and she’s spent the intervening time proving the moniker true. She earned $58 million in 2010 and grossed $280 million on her last tour, averaging $6 million in nightly ticket sales. But when Madonna performs her Super Bowl XVLI halftime set, she won’t be earning a penny. Why? Same reason the Black Eyed Peas didn’t get paid for theirs last year—halftime show acts perform for free. “Typically, the entertainers for the Super Bowl do not get a cash payment,” explains Marc Ganis, president of the consultancy Sportscorp Ltd. “This is the kind of exposure that entertainers would give their right arm for … they could do 20 Leno and Letterman appearances and still not reach that [kind of] audience.” Indeed, Madonna has plenty to gain from doing the show for free. Her new album, MDNA, is scheduled for release in March; she is expected perform its first single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” at the Super Bowl with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. The film W.E., which the singer produced and directed, opens in the U.S. this week. And, to top it all off, Madonna will announce dates for her upcoming world tour after the game. “No other vehicle provides a platform to entertain the nation on a day they want to be entertained,” says Paul Swangard, managing director of the University of Oregon’s Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. “Sunday we’ll be reminded that before there was Gaga there was Madonna. It is clear the Material Girl still wants a piece of the action.” So how much is that action worth? Considering that the halftime show is essentially a nationwide advertisement for Madonna’s various ventures, let’s evaluate it in the context of what companies pay for commercial time during the game. Volkswagen recently paid $3.5 million for a 30-second spot, a new record. By that math, Madonna’s 12 minutes are worth $84 million. If an advertiser actually wanted to buy 12 minutes of Super Bowl commercial time, of course, there might be a bulk discount available. Then again, there might be a premium for buying continuous chunks of time. At any rate, any such calculations are pure conjecture, as it seems highly unlikely that a company would ever want to dish out that much for a single event. There are other perks. Though Madonna and other halftime acts don’t receive a performance fee, they receive plenty of goodies on top of the free advertising. They don’t have to pay for backup dancers, pyrotechnics, load-in, load-out, etc—expenses that can add up to $5-$10 million for a show like Madonna’s. They also receive free transportation and accommodation for their entourages. Then there are the extra opportunities offered by the days preceding the Super Bowl, including free publicity and a plethora of parties during the week-long lead-up to the game. Though Usher joined the Black Eyed Peas as an unpaid halftime performer last year, he is said to have received $1 million to perform at a DirecTV event before the game. Given all these benefits, playing the Super Bowl halftime show for free is more than worth the trouble. In fact, it’s incredibly lucrative–and such a good deal for artists that some suspect a major change might be on the horizon. “They get so much out of it,” says Ganis. “Frankly, it wouldn’t shock me if, some day, the entertainers end up paying the NFL.”

just my opinion, but I think Madonna's desire to kind of move past her older recordings have hurt her in a way. Holiday is in my opinion one of the best 80's songs, and could/should be played at any occasion if it was marketed right. Just my opinion, but she should have made that her signature song, not Vogue, or any of her newer stuff. She should open w/ Holiday at the SuperBowl, or close with it, but I bet she doesn't even play it. Hopefully she will though

I think Holiday is Madonna's most performed track in all of her concert tours. I'm sick of her singing it live. (La Isla Bonita is also up there.) I wish we had access to Mediabase again so we could see what are Madonna's 10 most played tracks at radio. When she goes on tour I wish she would perform Open Your Heart and Borderline in its original form.

At last check, the top five usually consisted of "Into the Groove," "Borderline," "Holiday," "Like a Prayer" and "Crazy For You." I'd think that's remained the same over the last few years. Others usually in the top 10 were "Lucky Star," "Open Your Heart" and "La Isla Bonita."
One more day indeed, floridagrl. :)

www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/ask-billboard-madonna-s-biggest-radio-hits-1006098552.story?utm_source=most_recentAsk Billboard: Madonna's Biggest Radio Hits |By Gary Trust February 04, 2012 MADONNA'S BIGGEST RADIO HITS Hi Gary, With Madonna's anticipated return to the scene with her upcoming "MDNA" album and her Super Bowl halftime show tomorrow, it got me to thinking about Madonna songs on the radio in the Nielsen BDS era. Could you please rank her most-played tracks on radio over the years, according to BDS? (I understand that the number of monitored stations has increased over time, and that older songs might've had more time to build up a lead over more recent releases, but this would be nice information to know, nonetheless). As for her upcoming new material, if any act aged 50-plus can garner curiosity and excitement for a brand-new single in today's youth-driven radio environment, it's Madonna. Thanks and keep up the good work on the most-informative column. Jim Radenhausen Reeders, Pennsylvania Thanks Jim! As requested, here is a look at Her Madgesty's 20 most-played songs on all currently-monitored U.S. terrestrial stations dating to the advent of BDS data in the early '90s. (Special thanks to BDS director of data services Adam Foster): Plays, Title, Billboard Hot 100 Peak Year 308,000, "Music," 2000 296,000, "Take a Bow," 1995 294,000, "Into the Groove," 1985 269,000, "Don't Tell Me," 2001 262,000, "Holiday," 1984 253,000, "Like a Prayer," 1989 237,000, "Borderline," 1984 223,000, "Crazy for You," 1985 180,000, " Vogue," 1990 158,000, "Lucky Star," 1984 156,000, "I'll Remember," 1994 152,000, "Open Your Heart," 1987 137,000, "Secret," 1994 128,000, "4 Minutes" (featuring Timbaland and Justin Timberlake), 2008 108,000, "La Isla Bonita," 1987 101,000, "Live to Tell," 1986 99,000, "Frozen," 1998 98,000, "Beautiful Stranger," 1999 85,000, "Santa Baby," 1987 76,000, "Die Another Day," 2002 Madonna's new single is off to a roaring start at pop radio, as "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., will almost surely debut on the Pop Songs airplay chart Monday after less than three days of airplay. Participating Clear Channel-owned mainstream top 40 stations, in conjunction with the company's iHeartRadio platform, are playing the song at the top of every hour leading up to her Super Bowl performance. As of this posting, the song, which previews "MDNA," due March 26, also places at No. 12 on the iTunes Store's songs ranking, setting up a potentially lofty debut on next's week's Billboard Hot 100. Highlights of the chart will be revealed Wednesday (Feb. 6) on billboard.com.

riaa.com/blog.php?content_selector=riaa-news-blog&blog_selector=Madonna-Super-Bowl-&blog_type=&news_month_filter=2&news_year_filter=2012Recognizing Madonna's Super Bowl Show February 02, 2012 This Sunday the New York Giants will face the New England Patriots at the Super Bowl XLVI for a chance to win one of the greatest American sports honors: the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Also on Sunday, the one, the only Madonna will undertake one of the music business’ top annual honors: headlining the Super Bowl’s world-famous halftime show. In honor of Madonna’s much anticipated weekend performance, as well her new music video debuting on FOX’s American Idol this week, and all other wonderful things happening in Madge’s world, the RIAA’s historic Gold & Platinum program takes this opportunity to salute her significant career G&P accomplishments: With total G&P tallies reaching 64 million total certified units, Madonna is the 16th most certified artist in RIAA G&P history and the second highest certified female solo artist behind Barbara Streisand. Since first certifying her debut album “Madonna” Gold in 1983, America’s Material Girl has gone on to earn two RIAA Diamond Awards denoting more than 10 million copies sold of “Like a Virgin” (Sire, 1984) and “Immaculate Collection” (Sire, 1990). Amongst her numerous additional honors, Madonna has earned 19 separate Gold album awards, 17 Platinum album certifications and 12 multi-Platinum certs. Additionally, her 2008 single “4 Minutes to Save the World” (Warner Bros.) has sold more than two million downloads to earn a 2x multi-Platinum plaque, while her 2005 jam “Hung Up” (Reprise) has sold more than one million downloads to go Platinum. And while we of course anticipate many more G&P certs from Madonna in the future, those awards may come sooner than later, judging from the fortune of past halftime performers. As we noted on our blog last year, The Black Eyed Peas 2011 halftime performance boosted their music sales 25 percent week-over-week following the Super Bowl, while songs played at the big game, or in its commercials, bumped the album sales of Eminem, Kenny G, Guns 'n' Roses, Elton John, Boz Scaggs and Usher up an approximate 20 percent, according to SoundScan figures reported in Variety. Best of luck this weekend to Madonna, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots!

I'm on the official Super Bowl site, but do not see the above.
The NY Post reported a "Holiday"/"Ray of Light" mashup with no mention of "Music"- wonder where that came from.
Today is the day. :)

I assumed she was starting with the new song, glad she isn't, she'll hold more people's attention this way, makes sense since she will be carried in on a throne.

Posted at 08:26 AM ET, 02/05/2012At Super Bowl XLVI, all eyes on MadonnaBy Suzi ParkerAt her Boy Toy 1980s zenith, Madonna would have hardly been Super Bowl material. She was too edgy, too rebellious, too naughty. And back then, Madonna wouldn't have wanted to perform at one of the most conventional events in America. It would have cramped her style. But that was then. At tonight’s Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, she’ll will perform for an estimated 117 million viewers. Has Madonna Louise Ciccone, free spirit and ex-pat, ended up being as all-American as Tom Brady? Her performance, naturally, isn’t without controversy. Madge’s critics have already said she is a ghastly match for the likes of the Super Bowl. They say she is a faded star at age 53. They gripe that her faux British accent is annoying. But she’s ignoring the naysayers. Instead, Madonna says that performing at the Super Bowl is “a Midwesterner Girl’s dream.” In the video age, the Material Girl defied conformity, preferring to push buttons that made parents and the Moral Majority cringe but teenagers squeal. And she did it so well, wearing crucifixes, burning crosses and angering the Pope so much that he banned her from performing in Italy. Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Guinness World Records identifies her as the world’s top selling female recording artist of all time. She is a diva, and proud of it. Her detractors claim the only reason she is performing is to generate a larger share of women viewers for the Super Bowl. But what would be wrong with that? Yes, women of a certain age like Madonna. We remember dressing in black lace gloves, rubber O-ring bracelets and leggings, trying to master the moves from the “Lucky Star” music video. For many Generation X women, Madonna opened the door to sexuality – exposing us to topics that even “Cosmopolitan” didn’t address. Remember her 1992 book “Sex” wrapped in silver cellophane? Women weren’t the only ones sneaking peeks of that, rest assured, and they won’t be the only ones watching the halftime show. On the age front, critics should tread carefully or risk looking sexist. When Paul McCartney performed in 2005 and Mick Jagger in 2006, both men were closing in on 63. Few said anything about those legendary performers’ age, but instead heralded their music legacies. In 2009, Bruce Springsteen gave such a joyful performance he seemed — though this is usually said only of women — ageless. Madonna’s new video, “Give Me All Your Luvin,'” features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who will also perform at the halftime show, cheering Madonna as she strolls down a sidewalk with a baby carriage. Then generic football players carry her around like a goddess. Having grown no more shy with age, she struts around in hot pants, fishnets and a leather jacket looking more like a thirty-something than someone eligible for her AARP card. The video also pays tribute to the ‘80s, with Madonna wearing a cross, flashing her bra and donning platinum hair from the Blond Ambition era. Madonna could never have been a one-hit wonder because she cultivated a career of re-invention and a succession of new personas in the then-new world of music video. In 1992, she founded the entertainment company Maverick as a joint venture with Time Warner. Five years ago, she signed a $120 million contract with Live Nation, unprecedented at the time. Madonna also made movies – some good, some terrible – and documentaries such as “Truth or Dare.” She won a Golden Globe for her role as Eva Peron in “Evita” in 1996. She has also been a fashion designer, a children’s book author, film director and producer, and the mother of four children – two biological and two adopted. She has a new movie, “W.E,” about Wallis Simpson that she co-wrote and directed. (It hasn’t received glowing reviews, but negativity never stops Madonna.) She has also hinted that she could launch a world tour this year. Bottom line: She needs to do some promotion and make another come-back. The best way to do that? Perform in front of half the country and have everyone humming “Vogue” at the office on Monday morning. Suzi Parker is an Arkansas-based political and cultural journalist and author of “Sex in the South: Unbuckling the Bible Belt.” Follow her on Twitter at @suziparker www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/she-the-people/post/at-super-bowl-xlvi-all-eyes-on-madonna/2012/02/05/gIQABWtXrQ_blog.html?tid=pm_politics_popGreat article. Go Madonna!

^I expected her to sing at least parts of the songs live, but yeah I guess I shouldn't be surprised that she lipped Overall, I enjoyed the performance, the stage was magnificent, the visual effects amazing. LMFAO's and Cee Lo's presence was good too and I liked the songs she picked out for her set, 'Like A Prayer' was my favorite with the choir :)

So Madonna slayed...lip synching/prerecording and all.
Glad she pulled it off. There was one slight instance on the bleachers where it look like she almost missed the seat.
10/10...
