There is a debate going on in the Ashanti thread as to who had a more successful career.
Who do you think was more successful?

Although Monica is in a better position right now - despite "Anything (To Find You)"'s performance - I pick Ashanti.

I think a lot more people could recall and sing from memory some of Monica's poppier songs "Angel of Mine," "The First Night," "For You I Will" over Ashanti's catalog of hits.
Monica.

Monica. She has some easily recognizable songs, longevity, and whatnot. The name Ashanti may be more familiar, but Monica has had the better career.

Ashanti made a bigger impact I feel, but Monica over all when you factor in everything in I suppose. Though I have a feeling most would probably say Ashanti easily had Monica not had her recent success.

When I think of Ashanti, what goes through my head is: "he's like a lighter to my cigarette."
When I think of Monica, I think of how great R&B music is.

I don't remember Monica getting the Aretha Franklin Award just one year into her career

I want to go with Monica, but damn, it felt like I couldn't escape Ashanti for like 3 years. I couldn't stand her. Her eyebrows made her look like such a bitch.

Neither were that successful, so this fanwar seems a little pointless.

Monica has 3 Hot 100 #1s as a lead artist, 12 Top 10 R&B hits (including 6 #1s) spanning a period of 15 years, 7 Platinum singles, 2 3x Platinum albums, another album that sold over a million, and another that went Gold. If that ain't successful....

Aside the fact that Ashanti got more mainstream attention and awards, according to soundscan Ashanti is and Monica had a 7 year head start. WW Ashanti trumps her as well. 'Nuff said.

Did Monica get invited by Oprah for that Legends Ball weekend thingy? If she didn't, then there's your answer. I know Ashanti was.

Ashanti's signatute hit is only 1, Foolish. Monica has at least 2, TBIM and AOM. And Monica is still a bit relevant more than a decade since her debut.

Ashanti's debut album outselling any of Monica's album does NOT make her the bigger artist, especially because we're not talking like she doubled the sales of Monica's biggest album or something. That's like saying MC Hammer is bigger than Janet Jackson because his worldwide success with Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em was bigger than any of her worldwide success. Monica has remained way more consistent.

And Foolish is the 6th biggest female solo record according to BB. Brandy arguably got more of the credit for TBIM. Monica's biggest era, TBIM which I even bought in '98, still can't quite match Ashanti, Beyonce or Alicia's debut eras in terms of overall impact in the 2000s. She's never been the it girl in r&b at one single moment in time although Brandy has.

I won't downplay Ashanti's success because she actually was so successful for awhile with loads of big cd debuts and lots of sales. However, I would give the edge to Monica mostly for her consistency and sticking around. Of course, who knows if Ashanti will have a reemergence soon as well.

Monica has more longevity and a better overall career, I would pick Monica. Ashanti is mainly associated with 2001-2003.

I don't remember Monica getting the Aretha Franklin Award just one year into her career I doubt many people remember Ashanti getting it either. I definitely say Monica. It's easier to say Ashanti because her successes occurred more recently so it's more fresh but Monica had hits from 1995 until 2002 or 2003 or whenever it was, plus her R&B hits she had last year. I don't know if I'd say she's had an "impact" but she definitely had the bigger catalogue of singles and successes.

The big problem for me is that Monica always steered left of actual pop/r&b domination. In her first era she was eclipsed by Brandy and even Aaliyah who both outsold her. Second, eclipsed by Brandy again in '98 and when she tried to comeback on the scene in 2003 it was all about Ashanti/Beyonce. 2006 it was Beyonce again. She's had a successful r&b career, but never managed to stand out above her peers especially with lengthy gaps in b/w recordings.
