I realize some people are fans of bands for different reasons and different sounds. With a band like the Foo Fighters they have enough different sounds that I can see someone not liking Wheels as much.
However, I feel like they get a right to do pretty much anything after Echoes established them as the King band on this format.

I'm afraid I have to take Artie's side on this one, although One By One had some good songs. I just feel like they became too much of an arena rock band on the last two albums.

But they've always sounded like an arena rock band. Except maybe on the self-titled, and it's been a while since I listened to that.

I fully expect a resurrection this album. And they will avoid becoming a parody of themselves. They don't take themselves that seriously to begin with, which means they weren't going to become a parody of themselves anyway. Bands like Def Leppard or Bon Jovi maybe become parodies of themselves, I think it's a little early to speak of the Foo Fighters that way.

You got that from 1 song? Surely you don't think Echoes was in that direction? Or do you? If so, I have to disagree.

Why does the name of the artist matter? The song is good no matter who recorded it.

Now you're talking about covers. That's a different kettle of fish.

I'll assume you haven't heard Sheryl Crow's Sweet Child O' Mine. Or Fall Out Boy's Beat It. Are you sure you know who wrote those songs?

Covers or not, some songs just don't "fit" with some artists.

Actually I think "Beat It" works well with Fall Out Boy.

I'm guessing you weren't a fan of "walking after you" or "next year" either. Personally, I think it's those three singles that exhibits the artistic variety of their repertoire that puts them heads and shoulders above almost all modern rock bands.

Not familiar with either you mentioned, but I'll check the CDs to see if I like them. I think versatility is important, just not always meant for radio. I'm speculating that your "expertise" must be active rock and not alternative, or else you didn't listen to music between 1998 and 2000. And you must also not be familiar with the first X-Files movie or the television show "Ed".

They're really not that diverse. Yeah they have a few lighter songs and a few heavier songs, but most of their singles are at a fairly similar level of heaviness with a similar sound. If there were a Foo Fighters song that to me showcased their versatility, it would be "Aurora", which I feel is a beautiful departure from their signature sound. As far as singles go I feel like "Let It Die" did the best job of showing versatility within a song. And Incubus destroys them on the diversity spectrum.

Haha. I thought that was a train wreck, personally. I find myself wanting to listen to the original after hearing the Fall Out Boy version.

The Beat It remake is pretty awful. I haven't seen Ed or X-files, which might explain why they weren't too familiar. Although I do remember them both for the limited radio play they received.

Incubus does destroy them on the diversity spectrum, which to me proves that diversity isn't everything. Diversity helps add a little flavor is all. If your strongest selling point is that your music is diverse, I'd argue the quality might not exactly be there. I'm not saying that specifically about Incubus, although I don't care for them that much, just in general. There's a difference between having musical depth and being all over the map. I think the Foo Fighters strike a really nice balance in this regard. They have a pretty distinctive "sound", and yet have some nice depth in that you aren't hearing the same song over and over again. Echoes was my favorite album to represent them, but the truth is, they just have a really nice catalog. One of the few groups that I think you really need to listen to more than their radio singles to get full enjoyment.

Agreed on the Incubus diversity. But I'm not sure Foo Fighters are built to appeal to many needs.

I really hope the Foo Fighters announce the title of their first single soon. I'm just hankerin' to know!
And to an earlier post, I gotta pick Incubus over the Foos. Make Yourself and Morning View are albums that the Foos haven't approached imo.
