Very trippy. I get kind of an indie rock vibe from that, actually.

Yeah I think "The Pretender" debuted at #16 from the last studio album.

Very trippy. I get kind of an indie rock vibe from that, actually. Definitely. I could have seen Joey wearing something like that on a t-shirt back in the day if it weren't the Foo Fighters cause ya know "anything that isn't indie sucks."

I got a late 60's psychadelic vibe from that cover initially. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I'm liking this more every time I hear it. I like that it doesn't sound like "Best Of You" and "The Pretender" or even "Wheels", much as I liked all of those. It definitely sounds more like Foo Fighters of old. But at the same time, catchy as both the verses and chorus are separately, I feel like they don't really work together somehow. It has all the elements to be a great song, but there's no spark when it's all put together. I got a late 60's psychadelic vibe from that cover initially. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Yes, me too.

Actually, it specifically reminded me of this: ... which isn't to say I'm in any way implying the one in any way inspired the other; they're not that similar. Just the same aesthetic sensibility, I think.

It made me think of another '60s classic album cover.

I just heard this for the first time this afternoon, and I have to say that it is my favorite lead single of theirs since "All My Life"...............which is quite a compliment given I believe all their lead singles to date to be remarkably strong.
I liked "All My Life" a bit more just because it feels particularly epic and has a dirty, pulsating production to it that really juxtaposes itself from the rest of the Foo Fighters catalog. But as much as I think "Best Of You" was excellent in its lyrical accessibility and anthemic sing-along quality while also maintaining quite an edge with the shouting urgency in Grohl's vocals...............and "The Pretender" was quite strong for its multi-part composition and unique textures including the roadhouse guitar-esque break following the second chorus...................I think this resonates to me even more than those two singles nonetheless for its raw, primitive musicianship and crunching stadium-worthy riffs.
The chorus is obviously the part of the song that sounds closest to the traditional Foo Fighters sound, in that it sounds melodic and breezy while also raw. In that respect is where I'd disagree with the assertion preceding its release that this was a "risky" choice that erred from a radio-ready vein. This is certainly much more radio-friendly than, say, "White Limo" which isn't radio-friendly at all.
However, I do agree with the Rush comparisons. I could hear tinctures of "YYZ", among a few other Rush favorites, throughout the duration. I also am in agreement with the "Detachable Penis" influences.
All in all a winner that should easily become their eighth career chart-topper on the Alternative chart and likely their third on the Modern Rock chart, given how the latter format lacks any serious chart-topping contenders presently.

www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat/foo-fighters-rope-hangs-a-no-1-debut-on-1005051132.storyFoo Fighters' 'Rope' Hangs A No. 1 Debut On Rock SongsFoo Fighters reflect the building anticipation for "Wasting Light," their first studio album since 2007, as the set's first single, "Rope," roars in at No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart. The song starts with 11.9 million out-of-the-box audience impressions on 130 alternative, active rock, heritage rock and triple A stations that report to the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay survey. Only one song had previously launched at the Rock Songs summit since the chart originated in 2009: Linkin Park's "The Catalyst," the week of Aug. 21, 2010. "Rope" concurrently starts at No. 8 on Alternative Songs, marking the highest debut of the band's 24 chart entries. The group's first charted song, "This Is a Call" (1995), and "Best of You" (2005) each began at No. 12. Foo Fighters have scored seven No. 1s on Alternative Songs, the fifth-best total in the chart's 22-year history. With 18 weeks at No. 1, the band's "The Pretender" (2007) holds the record for the list's longest reign. Since arriving in 1995 with its self-titled debut album, the band, formed in 1994 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, has sold 9.5 million albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Up to #6 as of 3p today. Easily will pass Sing tonight. I'm not sure there is a song that will stop this from #1 this week. Rise Against at #2 right now has a slim shot!

Big start, but more impressive is the tightness of the Alternative top 5. All four of these are within 96 spins of each other, with Rope swooping in faster than I've seen in a long time:
2) Rise Against, 3) Linkin Park, 4) Mumford & Sons, 5) Foo Fighters

Yeah, that is impressive too. But I felt like commenting on the adds. I've never seen so many for an artist on Hot AC/Active -- admittedly, I forgot to check Gaga's when Born This Way came out but that's besides the point.

Foo Fighters are the Lady GaGa of Alt and Active currently. Although Disturbed would be the Lady GaGa-Britney Spears combo monster on active.
