But in the first week, they definitely do. Don't new Lil' Wayne songs usually soar to #1 on iTunes and sell massive quantities from the fanbase alone? For whatever reason, I think rap sells better than R&B does, especially recently.

Rap music appeals more to the white suburban crowd than R&B.

But in the first week, they definitely do. Don't new Lil' Wayne songs usually soar to #1 on iTunes and sell massive quantities from the fanbase alone? Two reasons (IMO) - one, Lil Wayne has expanded his fanbase beyond just urban listeners. Lil Wayne crossed over years ago with Tha Carter III, so now when he releases something he's got a fair share of CHR fans anticipating just as much as his hardcore hip-hip fans are. Lil Wayne and Nicki are the only rap artists off the top of my head who are capable of shooting songs straight to the top 10 on iTunes that fast, btw. And Nicki has only done it with her most poppy singles (Starships, Super Bass). (edit: just remembered Flo-Rida and his ability to debut out of nowhere with big sales. He's the definition of hip-pop, but for the life of me I can't figure out who is sitting on pins and needles waiting on the next Flo-Rida song to be aware of his stuff so quickly.) Two, I've noticed that the rap artists who are able to open with nice numbers (speaking of albums here) typically have built a cult following beforehand. They usually have been independently releasing several mixtapes for years and gaining fans that way before finally getting signed and having a major label debut. I think this is part of the reason rap at least is faring better than r&b these days. I've yet to see any r&b artist do this other than Chris Brown, and even with Chris, it wasn't like he was a brand new artist who was having to start from scratch to get new fans. He just needed to keep as many of the ones he had as possible. And what jazzy said, rap does seem sell more easily to the suburban crowd (read: pop fans who will actually pay for your CD) than r&b does.

I've noticed Drake, Kanye and Eminem's new singles usually shoot up on iTunes too. They just don't release new ones as often as Nicki and Lil Wayne.

But in the first week, they definitely do. Don't new Lil' Wayne songs usually soar to #1 on iTunes and sell massive quantities from the fanbase alone? But that's more of a built in fanbase and is different. Take Jessie J's domino for an example...not much of a fan base but once pop started playing and it go into top 40 it started climbing iTunes. Then we have lets say a new song from Melanie...it starts climbing on urban and reaches the top yet its #84 on iTunes...of course there is exceptions to both, but its strange. Even rock and country songs seem to get more of a boost from their formats.... But like Cynthia said the r&b crowd are more likely to buy CDs. Take beyonce and Britney....beyonce had party climbing while Britney had I wanna go.....I wanna go flew up iTunes went platinum and party could hardly break top 100...but Britney's album was no where to be found on the album chart while beyonce was still top 40 and consistently climbing... Edit: I'm glad we are able to discuss this with out getting our knickers in a knot kudos to us :)

Combining legal sales and illegal downloads, "Rolling in the Deep" is a diamond single.

Not sure the point of this discussion. A song can be a "hit" even if it charts at #100 Bigger hits chart higher Who forgets what five years from now is subject to the person doing the forgetting. I was under the impression that a top 40 placement constituted a proper hit single.

^ That's accepted, but arbitrary. When you get right down to it, does peak position make a hit? Does longevity make a hit? Who decides?
Also, your username is beautiful. <3 Florence.

Yeah, but even then... a track that peaks at No. 39 is not necessarily a bigger hit than one that peaks at No. 41. "Top 40" took of with format classifications. Personally, I think reaching the top half of the Hot 100 should be noted more than it is. But, "Top 40" sounds better than "Top 50," I guess. Any entry that makes the charts is classified as a "hit"- "Hot 100 hit," "Top 40 hit," "Top 20 hit," etc. etc. And hits can be compared using peak position, week-to-week performance on the charts, any of that.

That comment literally made me smile. And I agree that higher charting songs aren't necessarily bigger song and a lot of times don't make nearly the lasting impressions that lower-charting songs do. However, I think that tends to be the cutoff point in terms of whether a song is considered a hit for record keeping practices.

The Wanted is almost #2 on iTunes......I feel like this song has a good shot at being a #1 hit. Something the Backstreet Boys never did, lmao. I hope "Gold Forever" is the second single, the lyrics are a bit shit but the it's a lovely pop song and the sentiment is so much better than anything else on the American charts (in terms of mass produced pop music).

I can't believe the boy band craze from the late 90s/early 2000s only produced one #1 single on the Hot 100 and that was "It's Gonna Be Me" of all songs.

Bye Bye Bye and I Want It That Way never had physical single releases, but spent multiple weeks at #1 on Hot 100 Airplay. They peaked at #4 and #6 (respectively) on the Hot 100. I think if they had a physical release, they might've challenged for #1.

I think it's safe to safe that Boy Band Crazy girls would've bought the singles in huge numbers - those airplay peaks with zero sales - easy #1s. I'm surprised they didn't do limited releases like Sony with My Heart Will Go On - imagine if that song was a phantom #1. Hmmm, maybe Billboard would've changed the rule a year sooner.

Don't get the Bieber hate. Teen pop phenomenons are always good for the industry.

Yah- how would "Frozen" have hit No. 1 in an era when airplay-only tracks could chart? "All My Life" still would have ranked ahead of it. The year 1998 was the peak for the lack of airplay hits without cassette/CD singles, so while "Frozen" performed solidly in both airplay and sales, it got as high has No. 2 because of the lesser competition.
By the way- "Bye Bye Bye" did have a commercial U.S. single- but it was 12-inch vinyl, so its sales were not significant.
