Coldplay, Kelly Clarkson, Michael Buble Headed For Top of Billboard 200
October 26, 2011 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Next week, watch for Coldplay's new album, "Mylo Xyloto," to easily debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry sources suggest the set will sell at least 440,000 and 450,000 by Oct. 30.
The British band's fifth studio set, which was released on Oct. 24, will mark its third No. 1 album, following 2005's "X&Y" and 2008's "Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends." The latter started with 721,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "X&Y" launched with 737,000.
If "Mylo" moves more than 440,000 copies, it will be the largest sales week for a rock album since U2's "No Line On the Horizon" debuted at No. 1 with 484,000 on the chart dated March 21, 2009. Further, "Mylo" could post the third-largest sales frame of 2011, after Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" debut (1.1 million) and Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" start (964,000).
Coldplay is just one of a bevy of superstar acts that are looking to make a splashy bow on the Billboard 200 next week.
Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" is on course to debut at No. 2 with perhaps 150,000, while Michael Buble's "Christmas" could start at No. 3 with more than 110,000.
"Stronger" will mark Clarkson's fifth top three album (her entire output) and is the follow-up to the No. 1 set "All I Ever Wanted" in 2009. It entered the tally with 255,000 and was led by the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single "My Life Would Suck Without You." Her new album's lead track, "Mr. Know It All," climbs 24-19 on the Hot 100 this week.
Buble's "Christmas" should earn the pop singer his fifth top 10 set and his second holiday entry on the tally. His first seasonal effort, the EP "Let It Snow," peaked at No. 32 in 2009 and has sold 1 million copies.
Country king Toby Keith should grab his 12th top 10 with "Clancy's Tavern" aiming to debut with around 65,000 sold. His last release, "Bullets in the Gun," fired at No. 1 in 2010 with 71,000.
Elsewhere on the Billboard 200, look for veteran singer/songwriter Tom Waits to claim his highest charting album ever, as "Bad As Me" could arrive in the top 20. His chart high thus far came with 2004's "Real Gone," which debuted and peaked at No. 24.
DJ/producer Kaskade could also make some major Billboard 200 noise as his "Fire & Ice" may give the artist his first top 20 set. The effort, which includes guests Skylar Gray and Skrillex, would easily trump his previous chart peak: No. 104 with "Dynasty" in 2010.

Wow, impressive that She & Him is doing 15-20k for a Christmas album before even Halloween!

Oh please, Kelly's numbers are pretty good for a third album after her blockbuster. She's clearly an established star and selling better than many country superstars. Foo Fighters, one of the biggest rock bands around, did 235k.
I'm very disappointed in Tom Waits' numbers! Thought that he could easily reach 50k.
OK-ish for Coldplay. But can't see the album selling 2 million. It's getting mixed reviews as well.

People are hard on KC. There are some people that actually like Mr. Know It All (like me) & are happy that it songs like nothing else on radio. Not every album can be released with a huge #1 Hot 100 song on the charts. The album is very solid. I love it. I was not a fan of the last one. Sucks the MKIA is actually a better song than My Life Would Suck & people do not realize that. Also, she has hit the TV shows pretty hard & that should help!

Kelly's numbers are decent (and to be expected) considering AIEW had a bigger hit lead single supporting it upon its release.

Care to elaborate? Did she pick MKIA as the lead single? Don't know don't care. She's slowly departing from mainstream, as someone said with all those "screw men" songs. As a proof, she has yet to come close to Breakaway sales (don't say it's general sales going down, she didn't sell platinum with both following albums). Don't get with all the hater comments, becuase I'm not a hater, I just miss the old Kelly songs, we obviously have parted ways.. Most artist have just one hot selling album in their career. yes she was all over the radio with most of her singles but u only get that kinda opportunity once in a lifetime.

Sounds like nothing else on radio? A lot have picked up on the "Just the Way You Are' vibe of "Mr. Know It All." So, it's not exactly marching to a different drummer. Clarkson's projection isn't surprising, given her history. It's not like anyone thought she'd be in contention for the top spot this week.

It's getting mixed reviews as well. Yeah but feedback seems to be good IMO. Just speaking from my own experience, I know so many people who weren't huge fans of Coldplay before thus era that are really loving the album.

Actually, most artists rarely have an album like Breakaway so I don't even know why livelikedying111 thinks that it's so easy to replicate or come close to that kind of success. Pulse delusion at its finest.

As long as Kelly's album has legs this opening is fine.
Look at Katy and Pink.. Their last albums opened with less than 200,000 and now they're around 2 million.

Figures no one is talking about Toby Keith here! Given the new album's lead single ("Made In America") went to #1 and he has a massive cult hit on his hands presently with "Red Solo Cup", the 65,000 predictor can't help but feel slightly underwhelming, considering "Bullets In The Gun" did indeed sell 71,000 in its first week and is his only album to fail to produce a Top Ten Country hit. Not a bad result really. Just underwhelming. Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

Five of the Top 6 will be debuts next week as Coldplay scores the third best debut of the year behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne. Adele and Michael Buble will battle it out for the #3 slot. Should Adele win the battle and come in ahead of Buble, it would mark her 35th week in the Top 3. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Coldplay (Capitol/EMI) 440-470k *Kelly Clarkson (19/RCA) 160-170k *Michael Buble (Reprise) 100-110k Adele (XL/Columbia) 100-110k *Toby Keith (Show Dog) 60-65k *Tom Waits (ANTI-) 55-60k Scotty McCreery (Mercury Nashville/19/Universal Republic) 35-40k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 30-35k Lil Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Republic) 27-30k Casting Crowns (Provident) 24-27k Tony Bennett (Columbia) 24-27k Evanescence (Wind-up) 21-24k Foster the People (Columbia) 19-22k *She & Him (Merge) 18-21k J Cole (Roc Nation/Columbia) 18-21k
*Debuts (10/27p)

Wow at Coldplay's, Kelly's & She & Him's predictions rising. I really enjoy A Very She & Him Christmas. It's quite lovely.

Adele would fall below top 3 if this holds It would be her second time in the number four slot if I'm not mistaken.

Adele's numbers should stay ahead of Clarkson and Buble the week after, I'd think. So, she should hold in that top 4.

Most of us are expecting her to with the title track. If that's not a hit, I agree this will not sell well.

But she's got Bieber, Boyle, Miranda Lambert, Jackie Evancho, Coldplay's second week (which should still be well over 100k) to worry about the week of Nov 1st. She may stay top five though which would still be great

^I don't follow album charts very well, but could Florence + The Machine be a good first-week seller as well?

LOL Didn't they say 20-25k at first? These are the numbers I (and everyone else) was expecting.

Yes- so Adele just may slip to No. 6 or so against the 11/1 releases. Flop. :)

160-170k are some pretty strong numbers considering the lead single has underwhelmed on the charts and is not that popular. Idk why anyone would think of these numbers are disappointing.
