If "21" is the #1 seller next year as well, it will be only the 4th time an album has been the top seller of the year twice.
Michael Jackson "Thriller" (1983 - 1984) West Side Story soundtrack (1962 - 1963) My Fair Lady soundtrack (1957 - 1958)
Honorable mention to Elton John who had the #1 albums of 1974 and 1975 but with 2 different albums.

I'm putting my money another breakthrough artist no one will see coming In another thread someone else called Lana Del Rey the "Adele of 2012." With the buzz she has right now, it could happen if the album is diverse enough

I was actually just thinking about this and I think it's very possible. 21 sold 4,420,021 for the 2011 Billboard calendar year. Right now the album is at 5,679,443, meaning that for the 2012 BB calendar year, she's already sold 1.26 million. I think it's likely she'll sell another million by the week ending Feb. 26 (10 weeks from now including this one, so average of 100k/week) since it's still sitting pretty on top of the albums chart and the Grammy's will be in Feb. Then I think the album could sell anywhere from 1-2 million over the next 37 weeks (average of 27-54k/week), depending on whether they release any more singles and just how well the album holds up generally. That means 21 could possibly sell 3.25-4.25 million in this BB calendar year, making it a very likely contender for number 1 album of the year again! Has this ever happened before?

Looks like Adele will be the first million seller this year, again.

Thanks 2m! I know the actual Jan-Dec YTD is what people consider more genuine but I like to know both.

So, we have the first million seller for 2012 sorted this week. Going to be a while before we see the second one, though.

I would have posted by now but was hoping the catalog chart would magically produce full numbers. I will post later or this one might be close enough I suppose. Real life activities might mean others may be able to post faster than I can - which is fine too I hope you don't take my posting before you as a sign of ingratitude... I really appreciate your updates, but I was anxious to see where 19 would be by now, and then I ended up deciding to go ahead an finish the list while I was at it. I'll keep my eyes peeled for stats suggesting that changes are needed to this list, but in the meantime I'm pretty confident that at least the top 40 is correct. Edit: The more I check, the less I believe that I'm missing albums from the bottom of the list. This looks pretty solid. Edit again: Only five albums sold more copies in all of 2011 than Adele's 21 has sold in just the past six weeks. Of course, one of those albums was the legendary 21 itself.

Just one correction: It should be week 7.
If you look at Week 6, "21" had sold 799,018 units. In this past week it sold almost as much as in the six before.

I wonder if the year's big breakthrough era has already gotten started: Lana Del Rey and Gotye could still both do it with the right promotion. Meanwhile, fun. and Tyga are both debuting their breakthrough albums this week, although the latter clearly won't have the wide appeal necessary to reach a large audience.
I'm really hoping fun. can have a massive era this year. I'd love to watch that.

I had no rule. I like 50 because it is easier to maintain. There is no way I can post this fast. I will be maintaining my own lists still(bb year, catalog, decade lists, etc.) but apparently won't be posting updates anymore. Can you expand to bb year? Some have an interest in that as well Thanks for what you do. Quick question: Was nicki minaj #6 or 7 for billboard calendar year 2011?

The only reason I've posted so quickly the past few weeks is that I'm on a medical leave from school and thus haven't had anything better to do. When I get back to classes and work, this won't be the case anymore. I'd be happy to do a Billboard Year list for this week, as well.

You don't want this full time? The main thing I guess is that someone post it. I have done it for 6 years and am happy to have someone else do it. Or I can keep doing it but don't have time to do this fast(as you can clearly do this faster) I will still have all the lists but have no desire to post them if you can do it quicker(as I said I do this to be helpful and for fun but I also usually have other things to do as well) someone will have to send me a note, once you are not taking this on regularly. I'll do another calendar year update next week, and both updates (BB and Soundscan years) the following week, but after that I'll be busy enough that I'll still be willing to post them, but I won't be able to do them any faster than you have in the past.

Totals are actually slightly higher for the 3 albums that feature Whitney, listed in the YTD top 50. I am only listing total leaked sales, I am not attempting to estimate unleaked sales

I wonder if there was some adjusting on Whitney's GH because Billboard said this: 21's" year-to-date sales now stand at 2.07 million (by far 2012's top album). Well behind in second place among the best-sellers this year is Whitney Houston's "Whitney: The Greatest Hits," with 527,000 sold"

What has 19 sold each year? I'm wondering if it's on track for 2012 to be its best sales year yet despite being 3 years old.
