^ 1, 3, and 4 are all compilations. That's sad news for new studio albums.

^ Even worse, the top new studio albums so far this year rank 4, 17, 18, and 21. Bruce, One Direction, and Madonna are coming to help those numbers out a bit, but we'll still be without a huge new album.

Are there any predictions for Katy's Teenage Dream re-release yet? I don't see it pulling in huge numbers, but I would think it should sell a few hundred thousand copies pretty easily.

Few hundred thousands?
Maybe in one year if it has more two no. 1 singles.

By few hundred thousand I meant 200-300, not first week though. I would think people who own several of the original Teenage Dream singles, and buy Part of Me and possibly another of its singles might complete the album to The Complete Confection, not the original, so I would think it will easily get 200-300 thousand, over the span of a few months of course.

Considering that a T-Swift re-release can add a million without a hit single, I think 200,000 may be realistic for Katy.

Taylor is more of an album-seller than Katy, though. Katy has superior single sales, but Taylor has superior album sales.

Taylor Swift re-releases have generated as many as six singles into the upper half of the chart (By "single" I mean - stand-alone tracks that you can purchase at a store) ... You know what I meant.

Taylor Swift re-releases have generated as many as six singles into the upper half of the chart (By "single" I mean - stand-alone tracks that you can purchase at a store) Stand-alone tracks that aren't played on radio and don't have videos generally don't promote albums in the same way that singles that are played on radio and have videos do. I'm pretty sure that was the point j74 was trying to make. If you call any track that can be purchased separately from an album a "single," then the word loses nearly all meaning as almost any song can be purchased separately today.

^ You're absolutely right, but the distinction I was making was not between competing definitions of the word "single," but rather of the phrase "hit single."
There's a huge difference between the kind of "hits" that the T-Swift releases produce, which are lucky if they even get a second week in the Hot 100, and might eke their way to 500k within a year (which is absolutely fine as far as the label is concerned; by all appearances, their strategy regarding Taylor is designed to sell albums more than it is to sell singles singles), and the hits that Katy seems aimed for, which, going by the example of "Part of Me," will achieve respectable longevity in the top 10. Katy's albums sales are far less than Taylor's, but a smash is better than no smash.

I do understand you're point, 2m, and I do agree with you that you can call any track that can be purchased separately a "single," but I just don't see why we need to have a lesson in semantics when the point j74 was making was clearly about songs promoted to radio and video outlets, which have a very different effect on new albums and re-releases that tracks that aren't promoted to radio and video outlets. No one disagrees with you - I just find the semantics discussion to be unhelpful in some cases (like this one). No disresepct to you, though.

^There have been times you've made me think I'm taking crazy pills. I just wanted j74 to know he's not crazy either.
I think you're super smart, but I just wish you were a little more prone to harmony and cutting people some slack. I think in your head that kind of pleasantry stuff doesn't matter to you personally, but it makes it a lot easier for many other people during a discussion.

Can't wait for madonna and nicki.to jump into the top 10. Hopefully nicki can outsell drake billboard year so that she can claim the #1 "rap" sigh lol album of 2012...that is unless eminem releases something before October. Kanye is not a huge threat when it comes to sales. Any major rap artist releasing this year???

His highest debut so far is 957,000. Also Jay-Z will probably release his album this year as well which could be a huge seller.

I agree with Kanye being a valid contender with a potential release. He hasn't been going multi-platinum with his recent releases, but they're certainly not flopping. Plus, I think he has a pretty solid fanbase and a big interest in his career even after all these years. Nicki hasn't proven herself as a career artist yet.

Look at her go. Unless there's some major change to album sales/the way Billboard charts the Top 200, 21 is an absolute lock for Album of the Decade and Adele for Album Artist of the Decade. She's at 9.8 million between 21 and 19 so far.

YTD album sales seem very good: this time last year #20 had sold 209k (Decemberists). Now 236k was needed.
