^I changed my post to remove "in the near future." Neither band is really all that critically successful, either (on best-of lists).

^They give a good idea of an act's acclaim/reverence, so in that sense, they do. :) There are instances, though, when acts who haven't fared the best on them are inducted (for instance, Neil Diamond, who had to wait 20+ years from his eligibility).
But, not being mainstream enough could also come into play, along with other factors- look at Kraftwerk.

In my opinion Green Day lowers the bar if they get in.

^How so? The band's obviously been influential. And both Dookie and American Idiot are critical favorites.

Porcupine Tree have a very big critical following - www.metacritic.com/music/fear-of-a-blank-planet/porcupine-tree , but they haven't released an album since 2009, so it's hard to gauge. Rolling Stone voted Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory to be the best progressive rock album of all time. Loudwire voted Images and Words best metal album of all time in its annual Metal Madness tournament. Their song "On the Backs of Angels" got a Grammy nod.

^Metacritic is just one (small) measure of acclaim. On year-end/all-time best-of lists, the band has not fared all that well. Same for Dream Theater.

Wasn't the Loudwire feature a reader-/site-visitor poll? And the RS list is good, but note that it's a genre list (and RS isn't a progressive-metal outlet, so that list wouldn't be on Acclaimed Music). The only DT album on the AM site is Images & Words, and it's bubbling under the top 3,000 albums.
As for the Grammys- well, that's also not the best measure, but AM does include nominees for the bigger categories, Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
The AM site isn't the be-all, end-all (nothing would be), but it's about as close as an outlet could get, given the amount of lists included.

Porcupine Tree have made so many great albums and so many great songs, but they were mostly underground until 2002.

I'm all for Chic being inducted, but it's getting a little ridiculous. Why won't the voters induct them?

Is it that many acts on the ballot itself? Five-seven get inducted, so that seems like a lot.

There have been 16 acts on the ballot for the past several induction cycles.

Guess my long-term memory is being compromised. With so many nods, Chic will get in. It's funny, though, to see some acts go years without even a nomination, and then get in with their first (like, Neil Diamond and Heart).

One would hope that with Nile Rodgers' recent Grammy successes that he would be a shoo in already.

What does Chic have other than "Good Times" and maybe "Le Freak" to merit inclusion? Of course, The Ronettes got in off "Be My Baby" and pretty much nothing else.

^And Percy Sledge off "When a Man Loves a Woman." I mean, these acts have had numerous releases (Ronettes less so, it looks), but not so much in terms of number of hits. That's not what the hall is about, anyway, so...

The Pixies need to get in, and so do King Crimson and The Cure.

Cher came out of the Phil Spector era and still isn't inducted either.

I'm not a member of the HOF committee or the voting body, so I have no answers for that jeng. :) Maybe they see the impact of those songs as THAT large, who knows.

If it only takes 1 influential hit, Mariah Carey should be more than a lock. "Vision of Love" is the most influential song of all-time vocally, "Fantasy" with ODB" was obviously influential, and "AIWFCIY" is loved by mainstream and indie audiences.
Cher hasn't been inducted either? Wow. I really don't get their definition of "rock" with acts like Cher, Janet Jackson, and Whitney excluded, while Donna Summer, Gladys Knight, and Madonna have been inducted.

If Whitney Houston hasn't been nominated/inducted as of yet, I don't think Mimi's a lock- at least soon after becoming eligible.
