MUMFORD AND MUSE LEAD THE WAY Mumfords Dominate as WB’s Muse Will be Top Debut
October 3, 2012
Mumford & Sons’ Glassnote album Babel will continue its historic run with a second week at #1 after selling 600k in its first week, a whopping 70% (420k) of them digitally. That places it second to only Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 662k digital downloads back in May 2011, though 460k of those were Amazon MP3 downloads at 99 cents apiece.
The week’s top debut will be Warner Bros. U.K. rockers Muse’s The 2nd Law, which should do between 110-120k, based on first-day sales reports from those retailers not busy stocking up on iPhone 5s.
Grammy-nominated RCA R&B/hip hop hybrid Miguel’s sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream, the follow-up to his acclaimed debut, 2010’s All I Want Is You, should do between 55-60k.
Veteran RCA Canadian rock band Three Days Grace’s Transit of Venus, their fourth studio album overall, looks to be in the 50-55k target range, on the heels of their #1 Active Rock smash, “Chalk Outline.”
Another from the North Country, multi-Grammy winning Verve jazz pianist Diana Krall returns with Glad Rag Doll, her eleventh studio album, a T Bone Burnett-produced selection of standards “as imagined for the 21st century,” which should do in the 45-50k range.
Syco/Columbia America’s Got Talent finalist Jackie Evancho has her third studio album coming, Songs from the Silver Screen, a selection of movie-related songs, which debuts with 35-40k.
Syco/Epic X Factor UK Top 4 finisher Cher Lloyd’s Sticks & Stones, fueled by the platinum single, “Want U Back,” will do between 30-35k, a tribute to her loyal gang of followers, dubbed “Brats.”
Veteran platinum Eleven Seven punk-rockers Papa Roach’s The Connection, the eighth studio recording in their 15-year career, should get off to a start of 18-21k
Atlantic teen pop star Cody Simpson’s debut album, Paradise, will debut with 15-18k.
Legacy’s new Heart album, Fanatic, will have first-week sales of between 14-17k.
eOne hi-hop artist DJ Drama, T.I.’s DJ, should do in the same 14-17k area for his latest, Quality Street Music.
Album sales were up 5% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and down 4% year to date.
Track sales were down 2% vs. last week, up 13% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date, crossing the one billion mark this week.
TEA sales were up 3% vs. last week, up 5% vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.

Cher Lloyd matching Carly Rae's sales is kind of impressive (or sad for Carly, depending how you look at it).
I was hoping for more for Three Days Grace, but they've always had good legs with their albums.

I wanted Miguel to do more. I hope the majority of album being out way before October didn't hurt him. Ugh

Wonder where Mumford will end up...hopefully more than 200k.
Good but not great for Muse, same for Miguel.

I'm actually surprised by Miguel's numbers here. I thought he would hit closer to 100k (at least 70k), but, as someone pointed out, putting out 1/2 of your album early might not be the best idea.
Then again, I had no idea what the release date was for his album until last week. I knew it was soon (given the success of "Adorn"), but it snuck up on me.
It should have longevity though. It's an impeccable album. Much better than his last (which was quite good).

It would be great for Mumford and Sons to have a 200k+ second week. With the right promotion, this album could be one of the biggest sellers through the end of the year. I'm not sure what they have coming up but it would be wise for them to stay visible all the way to their inevitable Grammy performance.

If Mumford & Sons has a typical 70% fall, that would be ~180k. Right?
They could squeeze in 200k. I hope...

Singles sales does not always translate to album sales
In this case it could relate to the core fans of the song. There are more people capable of buying a single song than there are buying an entire album.
The Nickelodeon crowd are more likley to be interested in just the song and may not have enough money for the whole album

Nothing on Blake Shelton? Surely his Christmas album released yesterday will do more than 15k in its 1st week...I know it'll probably not be really 'big' until later in the year yet, but I figured it'd do more than 15k...

I'm still a little shocked by Carly's poor sales. I had a feeling that she would end up being more of a singles artist than an albums artist, but I fully expected her to sell more than she did. Solid numbers for Cher.

The last 2 albums I bought were Babel and Born This Way. Both digital. Why am I so mnstrm? Mumford and Sons are going to go platinum soon. I wouldn't think their type of music would sell so much, but it's looking to be one of the biggest sellers in a while. Good for them!

Muse, Miguel Albums Aiming for Top of Next Week's Billboard 200 Chart October 03, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles Rock band Muse and R&B singer Miguel are aiming for the top five on next week Billboard 200 albums chart, while reigning kings Mumford & Sons should hold the top slot for a second week. Mumford & Sons' second album, "Babel," will seemingly fend off any competition for the No. 1 position after its whopping 600,000 start this past week (according to Nielsen SoundScan). While we don't have a prediction for what "Babel" will shift in its sophomore frame, it's highly unlikely any of this week's new releases will bump the set out of the penthouse. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Oct. 10. Muse's "The 2nd Law" seems primed for a start in the No. 2 slot, with perhaps 110,000 sold, according to industry forecasters. It may mark the highest rank for the band on the tally, but not its best sales week. So far, Muse's highest sales frame came when its last studio release, "The Resistance" (2009), entered at a career-high No. 3 with 128,000. Miguel is looking to debut in the No. 3 position with his sophomore set, "Kaleidoscope Dream." The album could sell around 50,000 by the end of the tracking week on Oct. 7. The singer's debut, "All I Want Is You" (2010), racked 45 weeks on the chart, rising to a peak of No. 37 on the May 24, 2011 chart. Other albums primed for a high entry next week include Diana Krall's "Glad Rag Doll," Three Days Grace's "Lost In You" and Jackie Evancho's "Songs From the Silver Screen." Cher Lloyd matching Carly Rae's sales is kind of impressive (or sad for Carly, depending how you look at it). I don't know why so many people thought Carly would sell more. We are several years past the time when one or even two hit songs will guarantee a big opening, unless you've managed to develop a strong personality to grab people's attention and/or came off American Idol and have a mammoth fanbase already built in. Carly doesn't have that strong of a public persona yet, and I really don't even count Good Time in her favor b/c that's being pushed as Owl City's song, and I don't think it's been heavily pushed as a main feature on her own album. And I like most of Kiss a lot, but her voice isn't immediately distinctive so it's possible for someone to hear the song and not know it's her on it. I think she'll do fine in the long run though b/c it's a very radio friendly album and she's got plenty of single choices to extend her era's longevity. Longish way of saying I think that is pretty impressive for Cher Lloyd. "Want U Back" is pretty similar to Karmin's sound (in fact I find Cher's overall appeal to be much in the same vein as Karmin's) and is about the same size hit as "Brokenhearted," but Karmin opened with just 19k. I wish Miguel had opened up with more but 60-70k is what I was expecting from him anyway, so I'm not terribly disappointed. I think his era will have legs too b/c it's an excellent album. I don't think the digital preview strategy really hurt him much, it's just that it probably didn't help any b/c his core audience (contemporary r&b) isn't really known for being big on buying digitally. So the strategy was wasted a bit on them. Had someone like Mumford & Sons or Gaga used this idea however, things might have gone a bit differently.

As reference, Heart's last album opened with 27,000.

Not horrible numbers for Diana Krall but I think her last studio album was over 100K.

I wish Mumford was higher but what can you do after a 600k opening?
Ouch for No Doubt & Green Day! Maybe those concert bundles were included for GD?
Adele already above Lupe.

Miguel is trending upwards it seems. Maybe 70k is not out of reach?

The Green Day and No Doubt albums are in big trouble.
Both might not scan 500k.

^If it was February or something, I'd agree. But with the holidays coming up I can see them making it to 500k eventually. The Green Day album might struggle to since it looks to have a steeper drop but I think No Doubt will make it to that mark.
