Also, I bet Eminem opens with a million plus in '13. After the success of his last album, he will hit 1,000,000 again in one week imo.

It all depends on the success of his first single. That really helped him for Recovery. "Not Afraid" had gathered a sizeable fanbase and "Love the Way You Lie" had HUGE hype. That really helped him out with album sales. As long as his lead single is successful, he should get 700k or even 800k. 1 million is a stretch.

Depends if his label gets Domino's on board.

If Eminem can release a song like Love the Way You Lie as the 1st single leading up to the album release I can most def. see him doing a million plus. If that song was released as his 1st single instead of Not Afraid I would've easily seen that for him.

She'll be #2 for the year. Strong contender for #1 next year. I can't think of any threats next year besides Gaga, obviously depending on what material she releases, which is sounding to be more mainstream than BTW.

It's amazing how many different conversations Eminem can be brought into lately. I'm as excited as the next person about whenever his next solo album is but that's rarely either here nor there.
This week is all about Taylor. I'm not a fan. But I respect that she can sell 1.2 million in her first week. I think the album is ambitious and shows, at least to me, that she has personality and isn't in it for the same song over and over again. Looking into the long term like many of us are with this album, I don't think it will match up with the last album's success because I can't help but feel like the support from country fans will be less than stellar compared to her other albums. Plus, with her pop singles sounding like they are, I also don't think she can release all of them and have them all do well because, while it's new for Taylor, it's not new for pop music so her pop fans may not be buying up the albums after a bit. This is just my own projection so there's no need to jump down my throat about it because I'm not predicting the end of the world will fall at Taylor's feet. It's simply a wait and see game. Either way, congrats!

I think Taylor will have quite a bit of success on country radio and with country fans this era in all honesty. "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" aside, there are several album cuts that could be released to country radio and do really well ("Begin Again" is already doing really well on the format).
The album isn't as dramatic of a shift as some are making it out to be (it isn't even as pop as some are making it out to be); I'm not referring to you Max, but just in general. I think people are allowing a few blatantly pop tracks to define the album's genre (when in actuality it's a hybrid between pop/country and other genres). For some reason many just have to stick an album into one specific category and are uncomfortable with it being allocated to different genres. Red is not a country album. Red is not a pop album. Straying off topic a bit there I realize. haha

Fearless sold 3.2 million in 2009 (year after release) to be #1 for the year.

I can't find sales but it was #2 on the Billboard 200. SN had no pop support, so I'm sure that will help Red.

All of her numbers are impressive, but the fact that her debut had first week sales of 39k and went on to sell over 5 million and be in the top 10 of two different years is very impressive.

Shania 3 times I know there's more As far as artists with three or more Diamond awards go, I think the only ones are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Garth Brooks and Shania Twain. You might include Whitney Houston in that last if you count soundtrack to The Bodyguard as one of her albums. I think Brooks, Twain and Zeppelin are the only artists who have achieved three Diamond certified albums consecutively (and I'm quite confident that Garth Brooks exceeds that tally). Of course, one would be well-advised to keep in mind that some of the records involved were double albums.

We should meention that some of those diamond albums were multi-sets- i.e. Billy Joel's GH, Shania Twain's Up! etc. etc.

slw, is your list of diamond albums only for the Soundscan era? Michael Jackson is notably absent and he should be on there three times as well (Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad).
Oh, and congrats Taylor!

That looks like just a piece of what I posted

^^Bad and Off The Wall are not Diamond. OTW is 7xp. Bad is 8xp.
Having 2 Diamond albums is really no big deal. Why do we continue to discuss this?

areyoureadytojump, since what you posted are SS #s I added a link to your post (sourced #s from Soundscan are allowed, non-sourced are not b/c we don't want anyone thinking it's copyrighted, unreleased information). Just to clarify.
Bad and OTW aren't diamond? Dang, I could have sworn they were. Oh, well. I think Bad is noted in some places as selling 10 million so I guess that's where I got crossed up.
Selling 10 million at any time, even once, is a pretty big deal. I can see why people focus on it, particularly when someone does it twice.

^Well, in any sales climate, 10 million units is a heckuva lot of units. So it's probably a big deal to the record label and acts themselves. :)

Impressive for Taylor and Kendrick Lamar although there's no hit in sight beyond Swimming Pools on his album. I don't know, I think Poetic Justice could do some things. Drake being on it can only help.

And Taylor becomes the first female to have 2 million-selling albums in their first week. Who's next? I see Gaga as the strongest contender. Britney, maybe?

I guess that's expected from an album this universal.. Everyone I know who's heard the album is obsessed!
