Yeah, what I meant by "may" need the asterisk is that I wasn't sure if he actually sold over 1 million albums, or if he just sold 1 million discs (which would mean ~500k albums, give or take one of the discs possibly selling more than the other). Some would have no problem with that - I personally don't care - but others would argue it's a "cheat." The only thing I found on how the RIAA certifies multiple-disc albums is this: ( Double Live is 100 minutes and 11 seconds long, lmao) Garth's wiki says he is certified 21x platinum but then has album sales at 10.5 million, I just wasn't sure if BB also applied this rule when talking about his opening week numbers. While searching on it, I did come across this old Idolator writeup that claimed Garth tried to use Soundscan's double-disc rule several times in a failed attempt to pass the Beatles for most certified act. I don't know how true that is though. Well, he is/was the only active artist that had the chance to. But The Beatles are an active seller, and at this point Garth can only settle for two

SoundScan and the RIAA are completely separate, though, and the discs have never been available individually as far as I know.

The prediction thread for T.Swift... ...Look, Kendrick Lamar is killing, didn't know his buzz was that huge! Amazon MP3 is selling his album for $5 this week, wonder how much of an impact that will have

Regarding Garth Brooks Double Live, the Walmart box set (which this album was a part of) was not reported to Soundscan. This may account for the discrepancy between RIAA totals and Suondscan totals

If Garth got 2x plat, how can the first week number be 1,085,37 3? Garth Brooks takes another spot in the record books, with Garth Brooks Double Live achieving the best first-week sales of any album in American music history. According to Soundscan, the 2-CD set sold 1,085,373 units in its first week. (NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1998) www.musicfanclubs.org/garthoholic/news/11-25-98.html

Soundscan has always counted multi-disc releases as a single sale.
RIAA typically counts "number of discs" sold when certifying.

I've created a mess and I think I'm more confused now than I was before. SoundScan counted DL as a single sale of 1,085,373. He has sold 1M that week, not 500K like you thought. RIAA later certified it twice that amount since it's a double disc album.

The 21 million units for RIAA would equate to 10.5 million sets
Soundscan has this at 6 million
Looks like the Walmart set probably sold 3 million
(since certs at 2002 was 15x and in 2006 it jumped to 21x)
The other 1.5 can be attributed to either record clubs or that Soundscan was less accurate in 2000 than it is today.

Wow based on early reviews/sales both of this week's releases may well become Album of the Year nominees.

I think Meek Mill will also do well, in the range of maybe 150-200K next week. His buzz is pretty crazy as well, though critically I don't think he will come close.

Elvis wasn't going after The Beatles' RIAA total.
He wanted to be the best selling male RIAA artist which he was for some time until Elvis' label started re-certifying his albums. Elvis is still in the lead.
More Garth trickery: He released a 2 cd/1 dvd album a few years ago. It's has sold over 1.7 million, but is certified 5xp. How? Garth might have convinced the RIAA to count the dvd as a cd. B.S.

I'm confident Speak Now would have gotten a nomination had they not waited. The album had lost all its buzz by then and her debuting with 1 million copies was actually a huge deal.

I remember this being a big controversy. There was talk about it being over certified because Garth did not want "Come On Over" to be considered the top selling country album of all time.

Especially since, unlike with Fearless, Speak Now wasn't the sales story of its Grammy year. I could see the Grammys championing Red as a 'comeback' of sorts, even though we know that word is ridiculous in regard to Taylor's career. But yes, this is one of 3 albums that have been released so far that may be part of the Grammy 2014 discussion (with Jason Aldean and Kendrick Lamar).

I kinda feel like Aldean will be a Country Album force, but not in the general field.
I also feel like Speak Now besides being overshadowed by 21 had votes siphoned off by 21. They were both 20something females with actual talent, previous Record of the Year noms and multiple wins, albums that sold millions of copies, and out-of-the-norm crossover success and longevity especially with AC support behind them. Most predictions I saw before the noms were announced had Taylor & Kanye in 2nd/3rd or 3rd/2nd positions.

NEXT WEEK'S TOP 15: A big part of our job, these days, is coming up with new ways to think about how many records Taylor Swift is selling. So grok this: This week, Big Machine's big Red monster will likely sell more than the rest of the Top 50 albums combined. It may, in fact, have the biggest opening since 2005, when 50 Cent's The Massacre lived up to its name with a 1.14m bow. It's also due for the second-largest first week ever for a female artist, trailing only Britney Spears' massive "Oops ... I Did It Again," which opened with 1.319m way back in 2000. Here's how the field looks with the weekend looming:
* Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 1.15-1.25m * Kendrick Lamar (Aftermath/Interscope) 235-245k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 135-145k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 55-60k * Tony Bennett (Columbia) 30-35k P!nk (RCA) 25-30k Brandy (RCA) 21-24k * Stone Sour (Roadrunner) 21-24k * Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 19-22k Little Big Town (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 19-22k Scotty McCreery (Mercury Nashville/19/Interscope) 19-22k Adele (XL/Columbia) 19-22k * Gary Clark, Jr. (Warner Bros.) 18k-21k Miguel (RCA) 18-21k * Swedish House Mafia (Astralwerks) 17-20k
* Debuts
We'll be back with more ways to understand how huge Red is as soon as possible. (10/25p)

This is great to hear, hopefully she'll cross the 1.2kk mark. Who would have thought she would be selling more than Speak Now with her later cd? I certainly didn't. The only downside to this all is that she won't be able to be the best selling artist or have the best selling album of the year, since it's pretty much a lock for Adele. Still, great figures.

Have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating: Garth Brooks' Double Live achieved the first 1m+ debut in the SoundScan era because for that week, a mass merchant account reported sales for a nine-day period (the regular Saturday-Friday, and then also that Saturday-Sunday), as overall album sales were up 27% from the prior week. The account then got on the same Monday-Sunday reporting period that all other sales reporters had. Without that adjustment for that week, Double Live wouldn't have topped 1 million, per Billboard. So, if that change would have happened after that album debuted, Swift would be the only country act to top 1m in weekly sales in the SS era.
