:( I thought she would do at least 200k. Was thinking somewhere around 250k, actually. And on top of that, she might get outsold by Rod Stewart? No offense to Rod (legend) or to holiday albums (festive!) but that is not what I want to see right now.
Personally I think TEOF and GOF are both good-to-great albums; the quality of each is not the problem, but that the songs Alicia chose to lead them off were terrible. GOF's chart performance on urban has been misleading (edit for clarification: on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, new formula makes it look like it's more popular than it is). Crappy lead singles will eventually catch up with you.
I feel like the album campaign hasn't been as huge as she normally does either, but I'll admit that is just my own bias and it still doesn't completely excuse the huge drop.

Pulse, always so over dramatic. HITS kept "projecting" 300k. It got fan's hopes up.

She didnt make generic dance-pop like Usher and Chris Brown but lead singles of this album and the last one have been chasing "No One" in the anthemic pop area. Girl should stick to R&B/soul, it's what she's best at and it's what has connected to fans. "No One" was a huge hit but it apparently isn't easy to repeat. Not really surprised by these numbers.

Right. The song isn't catering to pop trends, but it's not Urban enough to appeal to her Urban base either. She's going to end up with a moderate hit at multiple formats instead of a smash anywhere. It's surprising she led up the lead single with another mellow pop song when she has a few other songs on the album that could at least smash at Urban (and give her an "era" at least somewhat similar to her previous one).

Alicia is known for consistency so I'm still putting an asterisk next to her name for now.

lol @ not chasing trends.. lets not forget that song she did with swizz beats...just because it failed to chart. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRG9Rtr6oLEwhat kind of BEP The. E.N.D. tribute?? clearly the public isn't here for her on that front...so making "generic" dance-pop isn't 1 of her options.

She was at the height of her career doing fantastic R&B music (I know "No One" doesn't fit that bill but while it was a massive hit, it was an exception, not the rule, IMO). That's what she should do and those are the kind of first singles she should have, IMO.

These sales are quite underwhelming by Alicia standards, but it isn't the end of the world. I definitely think she should re-evaluate the single strategy though. GOF is pretty much a hate-it-or-love-it type of song, and while Brand New Me (if that was even confirmed as single #2) is lyrically and emotionally strong it's too mellow to become a smash hit.
I don't think promotion is the problem, the girl's been everywhere. It could just be the vet status of an at-the-core R&B artist on her fifth album kicking in, combined with a so-so first single, and declining R&B album sales. Part of me just wanted her to be immune to the decline, lol.
Hope she pulls in at least 200K next week.

"Brand New Me" already went for adds at both Urban and Urban AC. It is the second single.

Thanks to another R&B act, they're making "4"'s opening #s looking that much better. Thank ya, gurl.
On a serious tip though, I can't say I'm too shocked her #s are awful simply b/c she doesn't have a huge Pop nor R&B hit, she's not really doing any massive promotion like her previous eras & let's face it, R&B acts just aren't selling units anymore. Many can argue that this is horrible b/c she is a major artist & she's releasing during the holiday season. Trying to figure out the Urban following will continue to be one unsolved mystery.

Anyone expecting Alicia to do these 300 or 400k was just crazy. 200k was going to be her best shot. She doesn't have a hit on radio (Rihanna does), she didn't release during BF and there are no sales on her album (extreme sales). Her last album was basically a mainstream flop. Etc.
She should be blessed she's getting 150-175k based off of everything

Very surprised, especially considering how Alicia used to have big first week sales in US. I thought she would sell at least 300k, because Beyonce even still had great first week sales with 4 despite RTW was a flop.

It's hard out in these streets for R&B artists. Really, though, this is what she gets for releasing that shit lead single.

I don't know it's really not that bad. Christina and nelly f opened to much much less And they were big artists around the same time as Alicia. Plus girl on fire is growing on radio.

I liked TSWABH (reminds me of college <3) and actually was confused why it never went to POP.

It's hard out in these streets for R&B artists. Really, though, this is what she gets for releasing that s**t lead single. It's hard to say what the real climate for R&B sales is when its biggest stars are either trying to cater to pop markets (Usher, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo), releasing stale material (Trey Songz) or releasing flat-out flops (Beyonce, Mariah Carey) as first singles. (Granted, Beyonce had a great first week with 4) Up-and-comers (Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Weeknd) posted impressive debut weeks with great true-to-form R&B songs. Perhaps on their next records, we'll see them become R&B's next set of headliners.

How many albums debuted with higher weeks in 2011 than Unapologetic?

"Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart" was definitely a hit (just not a crossover hit; same as "Un-thinkable").

How many albums debuted with higher weeks in 2011 than Unapologetic? A lot! Why are people still surprised? Do people here not follow the charts each week? 2012 has been full of disappointing debuts with a few surprises. I keep reading "She'll sell a million." 1 million sellers are very rare now. Only 1 2012 release has sold over 2 million. Only 6 2012 albums have sold over 1 million! That's 7 2012 albums selling over 1 million. There's only 5 weeks left in 2012.

Let's change the subject for a moment:
Here are the albums coming out in the next 3 weeks:
December 4, 2012
Kesha - Warrior Wiz Khalifa - O.N.I.F.C. Melanie Amaro - Truly Gavin DeGraw - Sweeter Live II Divo - Greatest Hits Wayne Wonder - My Way Olly Murs - Right Place, Right Time
December 11, 2012
Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox Green Day - Tre! Big Boi - Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors Game - Jesus Piece Boys Like Girls - Crazy World Lifehouse - Almeria
December 18, 2012
T.I. - Trouble Man Jermaine Paul - Finally
Kesha, Wiz Khalifa and Bruno Mars are the only ones that have a chance to sell over 500k in the long run.

Also T.I. if he gets another hit single later. "Ball" is doing quite well.

Strong hold for Taylor! Rod looks to have this year's top Christmas seller. Good for him.
