www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1556577/the-band-perry-and-tyler-the-creator-aiming-for-top-three-on-billboard-200The Band Perry and Tyler, the Creator Aiming for Top Three on Billboard 200 Chart By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 05, 2013 8:22 PM EDT While Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" is set for a third straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, a number of new arrivals should grace the top 10. The Band Perry's sophomore album, "Pioneer," is on course for a No. 2 bow and Tyler, the Creator's "Wolf" could start at No. 3. The albums may sell a respective 110,000 and 80,000 by the end of the tracking week on April 7, according to industry sources. The arrivals will represent career-highs for each act -- both in sales and chart position. The Band Perry's self-titled debut bowed and peaked at No. 4 in 2010 with 53,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The country trio's smash set has gone on to sell 1.5 million in the U.S. and was the No. 6 best-selling country album of 2011. Tyler, the Creator's last release, "Goblin," debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 2011 off a 45,000 start. Meanwhile, Timberlake's "20/20" could sell around 150,000 copies. If it holds at No. 1, it will be the first album by a male artist to spend its first three weeks on the chart at No. 1 since 2010. Eminem's "Recovery" was the last to do so -- holding atop the list for its first five weeks (July 10 - Aug. 7). The returning New Kids on the Block should see its tenth album, fittingly titled "10," debut in the top 10 with around 45,000. Their last studio release was 2008's "The Block," which debuted and peaked at No. 2 off a 95,000 launch. The group returned in 2011 with the collaborative greatest hits album "NKOTBSB" (with Backstreet Boys). It bowed at No. 7 with 40,000. The final top 10 bow next week could come from rock back Killswitch Engage's "Disarm the Descent." The set may move around 45,000 and secure the act its second top 10. It follows 2009's self-titled release, which debuted and peaked at No. 7 with 58,000. On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Timberlake is No. 1 while the Band Perry and Tyler, the Creator are Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. As for the rest of the Building chart's top 10: Blake Shelton's "Based on a True Story" is No. 4, followed by New Kids on the Block's "10," Lil Wayne's "I Am Not a Human Being II" and Killswitch Engage at Nos. 5-7. Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" is No. 8, P!nk's "The Truth About Love" is No. 9, and Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" is No. 10. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 1 Justin Timberlake "The 20/20 Experience" 2 NEW The Band Perry "Pioneer" 3 NEW Tyler, the Creator "Wolf" 4 3 Blake Shelton "Based on a True Story" 5 NEW New Kids on the Block "10" 6 2 Lil Wayne "I Am Not a Human Being II" 7 NEW Killswitch Engage "Disarm the Descent" 8 8 Imagine Dragons "Night Visions" 9 7 P!nk "The Truth About Love" 10 9 Bruno Mars "Unorthodox Jukebox" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

Those aren't bad numbers for New Kids on the Block- what other late 80s/early 90s acts, who had a hot streak for a few years and then dried up in terms of the hits can open with that much? Granted, the group's profile was raised with the backstreet Boys collaboration, but, still.

Bon Jovi, Springsteen just for starters They never really dried up though. In terms of hit singles. I would say so. Neither have had big hits in a while but continue to produce solid album numbers fueled by touring. Which is what they have in common with the New Kids

^I was talking about acts who *emerged* in the late 80s. ;)
Also, the Boss and Bon Jovi command notably larger openings than NKOTB, too.

Those were just examples, I could go on as well.
In general, most of the profitable older acts whose chart singles have dried up continue to generate big album openings on the basis of nostalgia and touring. This includes the "New Kids" (not new and not kids anymore) as well as many others.

I wanna see Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Bobby Brown, Pebbles, Rick Astley, Taylor Dayne, etc. score 40K+ openings.

One would need the touring, exposure, and to release an album.
I included the words 'most of the profitable' in my original post for a reason. These acts all have one thing in common. Succesful tours, emerged more then one decade ago, not currently generating hits and albums open with big numbers(Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi as well as Madonna and others)
I would imagine that Julian Lennon who just turned 50 today would likely flop as well as many others.

^Oh yah- he had like, one hit?
What you say is valid, and as mentioned, NKOTB was smart to hook up with Backstreet Boys. Not that BSB is a hitmaking machine, but it does have a reliable fanbase that gives it semi-decent numbers (for an act who hasn't scored a sustainable hit on some time). Plus, the nostalgia for both acts, too.

Would have thought that TBP's number be higher given their broad appeal. Perhaps pop fans don't buy CDs much?

Why would pop people buy TBP when they haven't had a pop single this era?

Would have thought that TBP's number be higher given their broad appeal. Perhaps pop fans don't buy CDs much? I'd think Carrie Underwood or Keith Urban could be labeled just as "pop" as The Band Perry is. Also, Taylor Swift...yeah, she's kinda doin' well in the CD sales department. TBP will most likely have a very soft 2nd week drop. Their performance of "Done" on the ACM's on Sunday was one of the highlights, and the track is doing exceptionally well on iTunes.

Nice to see Kacey Musgraves up 2% in her third week!! Hope this album sticks around :)
Also: surprised to see Taylor's "Red" all the way down at #29.

^Yes. Outselling Speak Now may not happen...
|
|
|
Post by josh on Apr 9, 2013 20:26:19 GMT -5
Last week Soundscan sales/totals for Taylor's albums:
Red - 25.3k, 3.570m Taylor Swift - 3.2k, 5.339m Speak Now - 3.2k, 4.327m Fearless - 2.891, 6.725m
She has "only" 757k to gain on Speak Now. Given she's likely going to have a re-release (I think I read she had been doing new songs in the studio) that will definitely help her sales, and I think she will pass Speak Now in time. It's odd given her pop success this time around has been huge, yet she's not selling towards her bigger range. Definitely looks like she's somewhat alienated her country fanbase.

Taylor probably has alienated her country fans but it could also be that 22 is killing the album's momentum. Haven't its sales as a single been underwhelming by Taylor standards? Maybe three Max Martin songs in a row was a bit much.

Yeah, "22" sales are pretty low. It's also not doing too well on pop right now. Album sales probably are affected by that, and also the fact that she has no country single out right now from Red, only a featured single.

Great numbers for The Band Perry! The record has grown on me in the past day and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" has the potential to be their pop crossover this go round, assuming it gets released.

Great numbers for The Band Perry! The record has grown on me in the past day and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" has the potential to be their pop crossover this go round, assuming it gets released. "Forever Mine Nevermind" too, I think--if promoted well, I could see them having a big, multi-hit era on pop, let alone country. Alas, that original April 23 adds date for "Better Dig Two" is approaching with no sign that the adds date has stuck and will return, so maybe they're rethinking things.
