YOUR ONE-DAYS: Put on your helmets, people; it's time to check out this week's key debuts:
Daft Punk (Columbia) 300-325k The National (4AD) 70-75k Thirty Seconds To Mars (Virgin) 60-65k Darius Rucker (Capitol Nashville) 60-65k French Montana (Bad Boy/Interscope) 45-50k
Oh, and the UMPG staff would like to remind you not to light your fatty with your helmet on, unless you want to get, like, wicked baked. (5/22p)

Awesome sales for Daft Punk! I would've never thought they'd sell that well in their first week.

Awesome numbers for Daft Punk! They might sell over 1 million copies in the first week worldwide (it's set to sell 150k+ in the UK in its debut week).
Also, 30 Seconds To Mars looking to do very similar to their previous album (This Is War opened with 67k I believe). Which is really great considering their current lead single hasn't done as well as their previous!

I figured around 250k for Daft Punk, so this is awesome. Great album as well.
I thought Darius Rucker would be get closer to 100k. His first single flopped, but his latest has been pretty huge on iTunes, other streaming sites, and radio. What a bummer there.
Thirty Seconds To Mars did just about what I had expected. Great for them.
Montana also did about what I had expected.
Great numbers all around except for the slight dip in Darius Rucker predictions

Those Daft Punk numbers are amazing.
Marketing-wise, they positioned themselves in a great spot: They are an established act, coming out with a critically acclaimed studio album after a long break, so the slightly-older-demographic-who-still-buy-CDs will make sure to check them out. But the hot, radio friendly first single and the duo's cool, futuristic-with-a-funky-twist image (which actually fits right into some of the popular themes in today's entertainment) did a great job introducing them to the digital crowd as well. Congrats to their label.

Daft Punk is like the Apple of the music world. Great branding, great marketing, and a great product that appeals to the masses.

Obviously a lot of people here did not see the Billboard article I posted last week. Billboard said 300-350k was very likely based on pre-orders.

Great Gatsby Soundtrack (Interscope) 55-60k
Excellent third week. This should pass The Hunger Games without a struggle, with its next challenger being Les Miserables.

I'm shocked by the success of Daft Punk so far, but I'm not totally surprised. YouTube was not around at all during their early years, so I think a great percentage of their success is due to the viral impact/marketing options at their disposal that they just didnt have before. It's awesome to watch!

The soundtrack is doing better than the movie. The movie's doing better than expected by some, worse than expected by others.. It's at least made back its production budget, and it on its way to making back its marketing budget. I see it being a big DVD seller. WB should be pleased. #offtopic

Daft Pink best not end up with 299K. is that acceptable for Darius Rucker, or a bit of a letdown? Ms. Alecia Moore-Hart's album just keeps on goin'.

is that acceptable for Darius Rucker, or a bit of a letdown? I think it's low.. His last one opened with 101,000, off a much less successful opening single. On the other hand, "Wagon Wheel" is a cover, so maybe it's less apt to actually sell the album?

^Could be- plus, it's diminishing returns for a number of acts as of late.
MTV gave play to Daft Punk back in the day (i.e. "Around the World" was among its top 20 most-played in some weeks). But, yah, not every one had MTV. And while not everyone has computers, YouTube probably reaches more people than MTV did in its heyday.
