There is no point. The random extras are just seat fillers. As to the number of extras this week...Well, last weekend was a holiday. Perhaps the script was a bit thin. Best potential excuse I can offer.

I'd help to fill in the missing songs, but I won't have time to listen until tomorrow. The closure of Yes.com makes our job a bit harder.

Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me" (featuring Big Sean) was the last optional extra, between #3 and 2. Seems rather redundant with "Beauty and a Beat" in there as well.

These types of extras seem to follow a pattern. They are recent droppers that haven't gone recurrent yet. In other words, they're not likely to turn up in a couple of years in an optional segment, so enjoy them one last time.

Someone said they were gonna play "Harlem Shake" the week after it fell off, but I'm still waiting to hear it.

The first optional segment this week is "Hollaback Girl."

Especially as such songs generally weren't big hits to start with, so they're not likely to get much recurrent play or be widely remembered in a few years (or less).

"Harlem Shake" got more Breakout and On the Verge airings than it did as an actual part of the chart. The one week it charted (at #40) it was cut down to barely two minutes, which literally must be one of the shortest AT40 chart runs of all time.

In the realm of useless trivia, if "Suit and Tie" hangs on at #19 again next week, then it would get an AT40 jackpot (19-19-19). I think "Just Give Me a Reason" gets a sort of honorable mention here, with a string of 1's (1-1-11), since 1-1-1 is obviously not possible. Meanwhile, there are 9 current or former #1's on the chart; there would have been 10 if "Die Young" had held on a couple more weeks (but the last two weeks we've had Ke$ha extras even without any charting songs from her.)

Actually, the version they played today didn't have Big Sean. I think they're using the HAC-friendly version so it works well on both shows.

I hadn't noticed this, but it really does seem VERY strange. Also they're frustrating us by not giving us enough
jackpots.
Wow at the 11 extras this week. The 2 "The" songs are back-to-back and a lot of songs are on the move again. This is
the first time I've heard Ellen K. say "let's get back to the countdown".  Thanks to "your votes" about half the
chart has featured artists.
BTW, are contiguous US residents perhaps just a little too close together?

That's what I thought.

So why would American Top 40 be "frustrating us" by not giving us any of those? Any occurrence of a jackpot is always going to be purely coincidental. Unless they are manipulating the chart, which suggests that richie is in favour of that! :o
