I'm not sure if this is the song that's going to do it but I hope so. They have been doing everything right in migrating Kelly into the country genre. They have been introducing Kelly to country slowly and steadily that now she's almost practically a staple (maybe that's stretching it a bit) but I do think the country audience is used to her now and more accepting of her.

A good sign of things to come? The country station in Los Angeles, KKGO, played this a few hours ago. At first, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Sounded SOOO good!

I just caught it on there too. They've played it quite a bit again today after the hourly thing yesterday. I don't know if I'd call this song totally country, but I wouldn't call it not country either. It really doesn't sound out of place in the playlist, at least on this station and it's very catchy. The church bells in the chorus are a nice touch and could've been very cheesy, but they're tastefully done.

I really like this. I think this could be Kelly's big country radio breakthrough; of course, I also thought that about "Don't Rush". This at least sounds more like songs by female artists that are getting played. I could hear Miranda, Carrie or The Band Perry singing something similar. I think this could be huge for her.

The song sounds great, Kelly sings it well (duh!). That's the good. The bad is that the lyrics are quite immature. Or if not immature, just very cliche. It's almost as if the songwriters had this great song that just needed lyrics, and then they came across a poem written by a teenage girl picturing her wedding. The song probably works well as background noise because it's catchy and fun, but I'm not excited about treating a KC song as just background noise.
I just hope this does at least decently on the charts so that Kelly's country career can continue.

I'm not enjoying the song as much as others, maybe it'll grow on me. I want Kelly Clarkson to have a big country hit, which I thought she'd get with Don't Rush, because there just aren't enough female country artists getting the airplay they deserve, besides Taylor, Carrie, and Miranda of course.

I guess her natural audience in that town is the country radio fans. I agree the pop stations don't especially favor her there, but the big HOT AC station (KBIG) does, a lot. KKGO has been pretty good to her over the years, all things considered. I still hear BOY with Reba from time to time, DYWS gets played quite a bit still, they got on the DR bandwagon a little late but did play it and surprisingly, MKIA gets the most play or at least did until TIU dropped. We'll see how this songs plays out, right now they've added it in on regular rotation and are still boasting that they were the first in the country to play it. Hope they keep with it.

I really liked Don't Rush, but this one disappoints me. It certainly has the right sound for commercial success though, I could easily hear someone like the Band Perry doing this one. Kelly's vocals just kill it for me, her voice is just way too pop for my tastes. It's the same problem I had with the country version of Mr. Know It All really, I just hear a pop singer singing a country song. She sounded right at home on Don't Rush though, so I still have hope for her future releases.

While I very much understand what both of you are saying I can't help but feel if Kelly hadn't done a song like this her career on country radio might have stalled. I loved "Don't Rush" but with country radio the way it is today I can see DR barely had a chance. I, at least, have comfort in knowing that this song will get her some more attention on country radio because while it may not have much lyrical depth it is very fun and catchy. The song's production reminds me of Alanis's "You Oughta Know" while the lyrics have hint of Shania Twain quirkiness to it. When I first heard the clip of it I thought it was going to be really bad but after hearing the final version you can't help but like it. The lyrics have no depth but the level of fun on this record makes up for that. I almost want to say that Kelly could be the "Madonna of country music" considering how easy it is for her to switch styles.

I'm surprised that so many of you think this will be a big hit. The verses sound ok, but this hardly sounds country. And the chorus...yikes, it doesn't sound good at all. I want to root for her but I don't see this doing much. Maybe it can go top 30 like "Don't Rush", based off label strength and her name recognition alone, but I think this one will prove to be a very polarizing song to country listeners.

A lot of people seem to say this doesn't sound country, but when it's compared to songs on radio today I fail to see how it is much different, there's rap on country radio now, so this seems within reason of current country.

I think it sounds very similar to something Miranda would sing. I think it has similarities to "Baggage Claim" in style, etc...

Lol at Begin Again not sounding country, but this does. Some people will beat a dead horse even after it's rotted for six months. That said, I love these lyrics (and love the song), I just think it's WAY TOO FAST for country radio (although there are some exceptions, like Josh Gracin's Nothing To Lose).

I hear so much country influences in this that I fail to see why anyone would say it isn't country.
If you want my opinion, "Don't Rush" sounded way more poppy than this does. Actually, "Don't Rush" sounded like a jazz-influenced pop song that just so happened to feature a prominent country/gospel vocalist in the background. "Tie It Up" sounds exactly like something that would be done by Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, or earlier Taylor Swift.

My point is that Kelly's vocals do not sound country at all, whereas both Carrie and Miranda definitely do, so yes I definitely do think either one of those ladies would turn in a much more 'country' performance of TIU.
This doesn't seem that far removed from some of Kelly's past material, and I thought the point of her releasing songs to country radio was because she wanted to show off a country side of herself. But so far the releases have only been somewhat country-ish. And while many other female country singers (as well as males and groups) incorporate pop and rock into their music as well, they started their careers country. Kelly is gonna face resistance because she's not a country singer. Therefore, I don't think this will do much more than DR did. There will be people (radio folks and fans) that won't like this at all, and so that's why I think if Kelly wants to cater to country radio, her country singles need to be further towards the country end of the spectrum in order to gain acceptance.
I really do like her but this is a big swing and miss for me. Her voice sounds quite grating on the chorus; I just don't think the phrasing fits her style, and the production really seems to be clashing with her voice.

I don't understand how Kelly's non-throaty non-nasal non-twangy vocals can be called inappropriate for Country music when Trisha Yearwood's open clear non-throaty non-nasal non-twangy vocals are called by some the best in Country music. If Country radio doesn't appreciate an incredibly great emotive singing voice then imo Kelly is doomed on that format. I just don't get it I guess.

It's not just about twang. It's about tone and phrasing more than anything, and to my ears, Kelly continues to sound very pop/rock here, especially with her phrasing. She does have a great emotive voice but I don't think this is the right song at all for her to try to cater to country radio.

Thanks for your input jhomes87. I still don't get it though, especially that part about the phrasing. The song is wordy and she has to fit the words in somehow. I don't know how she could have sung it any differently to fit all the words in or how your examples of Miranda or Carrie could have fit the words in any differently and therefore make it sound Country (phrasing wise, that is). I'm so lost about the country music world. Hopefully I'll figure it out eventually..lol.
eta: I hope you don't feel I'm being argumentative because I'm not. I truly want to understand, and I can't so far.

I like Kelly a lot personally, her voice and although some of her offerings (like her last one-Baby Don't Rush) had a country vibe, I also don't feel this has a country sound whatsoever- very pop through and through.

I'm slightly biased, but I've heard this on the radio probably 8-10 times since Tuesday and honestly, it really doesn't sound out of place in the playlist. DR did, this doesn't. I think it'll do better than DR did, but it's not going to stick around for 6 months like that song did. I know there's a lot of competition on the charts right now and I don't follow them close enough to give a real educated guess, I'd like to say this will be her T20 song and beyond thrilled if it went T15 but I don't know if that's even feasible. I really do like her but this is a big swing and miss for me. Her voice sounds quite grating on the chorus; I just don't think the phrasing fits her style, and the production really seems to be clashing with her voice. Well, she's also said one of the reasons (and I'm sure there were behind the scenes stuff going on too) she held off as long as she did to do anything on this side was because she wasn't sure that people would like the type of stuff she wanted to do. She said at the time that she wanted to do more bluesy rock, which I think this and AGLT both fall under, and not big-time pop country. DR was far more 80's-90's and r&b country influenced, than anything current. More than anything, I think that is the side of her she wanted to show off rather than straight up country country country. Sonically and subject wise, she'd never be able to release anything like this or DR to any other format. She'd face resistance any which way she she decided to go, might as well try it by being slightly different from the others.

I actually love that she's just making the kind of music that interests her sonically when it comes to her country releases, between this and Don't Rush and Ain't Gonna Like This. I only hope she has the same freedom with her pop stuff on her next album, as it seems like when it comes to her pop singles, they tend to be more formulaic and trend-chasing (or, more often, chasing the success of her own catalog) than organic and true to her style. I don't see this as being worlds away from Miranda Lambert/The Band Perry/Carrie Underwood, and I don't buy the "it's not country" delivery stance as anything more than opinion, rather than fact, but that's just me.

This sounds like something Pink would offer to country radio. That said, this is a great song. I know this will be huge for Kelly if promoted properly.

I agree with the first part of your sentence but as for the second part, I don't see anyone questioning the "country-ness" of the song as trying to pass it off as fact. Saying the song isn't country is no less an opinion than saying it is. We could dismiss most posts around here as opinion because it's a message board meant for discussion. I personally feel the recorded version gives me less of a country vibe than the live version. The effects placed on her vocals in the verses do not help. The natural country phrasing that comes through when she's talking seems mostly hidden on the recorded track. As you suggest, I think the song itself isn't far removed from something like Done or Better Dig Two from The Band Perry. I still think it fits in on country radio and will still be a hit. And it's up there with Breakaway and Because Of You among my favorite KC songs.
