I guess the song that is the most iconic and that almost everyone thought was #1 on the Hot 100 was Madonna's "Material Girl", which went to #2.

The last one was the one I was looking for cuz you know ;) I definitely agree with IKYWT, especially how it pretty much ruled airplay for most of February. "You Belong With Me" as well, since it was blocked by "I Gotta Feeling". How the hell did "Fireflies" manage to make #1 on the Hot 100? It didn't peak in airplay until the end of 2009.

"Shake It Off" - Mariah Carey Still mad that didn't hit the top spot. Don't worry, Shake It Off will reach the top off The Hot 100. Expect that it'll be Taylor Swift's Shake It Off.

Taylor Swift-Love Story; You Belong With Me and I Knew You Were Trouble. Ed Sheeran-Sing[This only went top 20 and was hyped to be the "Song Of The Summer"] Miley Cyrus-We Can't Stop[Don't care much for the song but this was everywhere last summer just blocked by Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines"] Selena Gomez-Come And Get It Maroon 5-Payphone

This year, Counting Stars, Problem, and Stay With Me (and All About That Bass if it gets blocked) come to mind.

I guess the song that is the most iconic and that almost everyone thought was #1 on the Hot 100 was Madonna's "Material Girl", which went to #2. I was going to mention this and "Express Yourself". "Material Girl" is especially surprising considering how massive she was at the time! It's one of my least favorites from her but iconic to say the least.

"Gloria" by Laura Branigan. No 2? WTH? Also agree with Lights, Since U Been Gone, Material Girl, Express Yourself, and Counting Stars.

Crazy came so close. It was #2 to Promiscuous, and just as it overtook Promiscuous, London Bridge leapfrogged it to #1.

Just for Coco: I'll pick ALL of Mariah Carey's #2s. If those four went to the top, she would have the most chart toppers on the Hot 100 with 22, pushing the Beatles' total of 20 to second place.

Janet's "Someone to Call My Lover"
I swear that song and video were EVERYWHERE that summer! I heard it at least 1-2 times/day on the radio.
