Jay Z's 'Magna Carta' Holds At No. 1 On Billboard 200 For Second Week

As expected, Jay Z's Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail holds at No. 1 for a second week on the Billboard 200, selling 129,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan (down 76%). The set debuted atop the list last week with 528,000.

As the set retains the No. 1 crown, it's the first rap album in nearly two years to spend two weeks at No. 1. The last rap album to rack up two weeks in the penthouse was Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV, which led the Billboard 200 on the charts dated Sept. 17 and Sept. 24, 2011.

Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail easily blocks the arriving Sara Bareilles, who bows at No. 2 with The Blessed Unrest, selling 68,000 copies. The singer/songwriter's last full-length studio album, 2010's Kaleidoscope Heart, debuted at No. 1 with a start of 90,000.

Following Bareilles is the latest Kidz Bop album, Kidz Bop 24, entering at No. 3 with 62,000. The popular series—which mostly consists of child-friendly covers of hit songs—has now logged 17 top 10 albums. A No. 1 title still eludes the franchise, which launched in 2001 with the first Kidz Bop album. All of the numbered "Kidz Bop" titles—except for volumes 1-6 and 17—have debuted in the top 10.

Next up, rapper Ace Hood secures his best sales week and highest-charting album, as Trials & Tribulations bows at No. 4 with 34,000. His previous best week was logged with his last entry, 2011's Blood Sweat + Tears, which debuted and peaked at No. 8 with 26,000.

Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times slips 4-5 with 31,000 (down 5%), Imagine Dragons' Night Visions falls a rung to No. 6 with 28,000 (down 15%), and J. Cole's Born Sinner dips 3-7 with 27,000 (down 32%).

The "Teen Beach Movie" soundtrack surfs in with a debut at No. 8 with 25,000, following the much-watched premiere of its companion Disney Channel film. According to Disney Channel, the movie's bow on July 19 earned 8.4 million total viewers, making it the most-watched TV movie this year.

"Teen Beach Movie" is the first non-sequel TV movie soundtrack to debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 since the chart dated July 5, 2008. That week, Disney Channel's first "Camp Rock" soundtrack bowed at No. 3.

Rounding out the top 10 are Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience, which climbs 13-9 with 24,000 (up 33%) and the arriving Cody Simpson, at No. 10. The latter scores his best sales week yet, as Surfers Paradise splashes in with slightly more than 24,000. The set—his second full-length album—is also his highest-charting release.

Simpson's previous high-water mark—both in terms of sales and position—was reached with his first chart entry, 2011's Coast to Coast EP. It debuted and peaked at No. 12 with nearly 24,000. The following year, his debut full-length set, Paradise, reached No. 27 in its premiere frame (15,000).

Over on the Hot Digital Songs chart, there is little movement in the top 10. So little movement, that only four songs shift places—barely. No. 1 again is Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. & Pharrell. The smash single sells another 340,000 downloads, down by 11% for the week. Its total sales now stand at 3.6 million.

Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" holds at No. 2 (208,000; down 3%) while Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" rises 4-3 with 173,000 (though it's down by 4%). Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Timberlake, falls one spot to No. 4 with 166,000 (down 16%).

Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" stays its course at No. 5 with 138,000 (down 13%), Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," featuring Pharrell Williams, is also a non-mover at No. 6 with 132,000 (down 16%). Anna Kendrick's "Cups," from "Pitch Perfect," rises a position to No. 7 with 122,000, the only sales gain in the top 10. (The song is up by 1%.)

Bruno Mars' "Treasure" slips a spot to No. 8 with 116,000 (down 11%), followed by two titles from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. First, their "Same Love," featuring Mary Lambert, holds at No. 9 with 111,000 (down 6%). Then, at No. 10—for another week—is the duo's "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton) with 97,000 (down 15%).

This is the first week since the Feb. 16 chart where the No. 10 title sold fewer than 100,000 copies.

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 21) totaled 4.7 million units, down 6% compared with the sum last week (5 million) and down 12% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.4 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 156.5 million, down 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (167.2 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.84 million downloads, up less than 1% compared with last week (22.78 million) and down 7% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (24.5 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 752.2 million, down 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (773.5 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: Zac Brown Band's Uncaged returned to No. 1 for a second week, selling a mere 48,000 (down 38%). The top debut was Gaslight Anthem's Handwritten, which started at No. 3 with 40,000.

Jay Z’s Magna Carta…Holy Grail logs its second week at #1 on The Billboard 200. It’s the first rap album to stay on top for two weeks since Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV in the summer of 2011. Magna Carta sold another 129K copies this week, bringing its two-week total to 658K. That’s the biggest two-week total for a rap album since Drake’s Take Care sold 804K copies in its first two weeks in the fall of 2011.

Jay Z has logged 23 weeks at #1 on The Billboard 200 over the course of his career, which is the third highest tally among rappers. He’s behind Eminem (29 weeks) and M.C. Hammer, who spent 24 weeks at #1 in 1990—all with one blockbuster album, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ’Em.

The news isn’t as good for Jay Z’s frequent collaborator Kanye West, whose Yeezus drops from #6 to #18 in its fifth week. Unless the album returns to the top 10, its four-week run in the top 10 will stand as West’s briefest. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had held that title, with five weeks in the top 10.

Ironically, many music critics have raved about West’s album and have dismissed Jay Z’s. Entertainment Weekly’s Ray Rahman gave West’s album an A- and Jay Z’s album a C+. (EW’s Kyle Anderson took an even dimmer view of Jay Z’s album, giving it a D.) Rolling Stone gave West’s album 4-1/2 stars and Jay Z’s album just three stars. Of course, this isn’t the first time that music critics and album buyers have seen things differently.

Jay Z’s album sold 70K digital copies this week, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the second week. It has sold 419K digital copies to date. It’s already Jay’s third-best-selling digital album, following Watch The Throne (with West, 778K) and The Blueprint 3 (464K).

Sara Smiles: Sara Bareilles’ third major-label album, Blessed Unrest, debuts at #2. All three of these albums have made the top 10. Little Voice peaked at #7 in February 2008. Kaleidoscope Heart debuted at #1 in September 2010.

Kidz Bop Kids’ Kidz Bop 24 debuts at #3. This is the 17th volume in this series to reach the top 10. Only one franchise in music history has spawned more top 10 albums. That’s the Now franchise, which has sent 51 volumes into the top 10. The first Kidz Bop installment to reach the top 10 was Kidz Bop 7 in February 2005. All but one installment since then has made the top 10.

Ace Hood’s fourth studio album, Trials & Tribulations, debuts at #4. It’s his second top 10 album in a row. Blood, Sweat + Tears hit #8 in August 2011.

Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times dips from #4 to #5. It holds at #1 on Top Country Albums for the fifth week. It’s the first album by a duo to log five or more weeks at #1 on the country chart since Sugarland’s Love On The Inside, which spent six weeks on top in the summer of 2008. It’s the first debut album to log five or more weeks at #1 on the country chart since Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day, which spent six weeks on top in 2011.

J. Cole’s sophomore album, Born Sinner, which drops from #3 to #7, tops the 500K mark in sales in its fifth week. J. Cole’s first album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, took 16 weeks to reach 500K. Born Sinner is the 18th album to sell 500K copies in 2013. (I want to reach out and change that title to Born Winner.)

The Teen Beach Movie soundtrack debuts at #8. It’s #1 on Top Soundtracks. The made-for-TV movie drew 8.4 million viewers Friday night, making it the Disney Channel’s most watched original movie in four years. The musical is the Disney Channel’s fifth-most-watched original movie. (The channel’s ratings champ is High School Musical 2, which drew a remarkable 17.2 million viewers in its 2007 debut.)

Cody Simpson’s second studio album, Surfer’s Paradise, debuts at #10. It’s the 16-year old Aussie heartthrob’s first top 10 album. An EP, Coast To Coast, hit #12 in 2011. His first full-length, Paradise, reached #27 in 2012. Surfer’s Paradise is the first album with a variation of the word “surf” in its title to crack the top 10 since The Beach Boys scored in 1963 with Surfin’ U.S.A. (#2 in July) and Surfer Girl (#7 in November.)

Incidentally, Simpson is the third artist with that surname to crack the top 10, following sisters Jessica Simpson and Ashlee Simpson.

Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines album debuts at #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. It’s his first #1 in that country. His only previous album to make the U.K. chart was The Evolution Of Robin Thicke, which peaked at #30 in 2007. The Blurred Lines album is due for release in the U.S. on July 30. The title track, which features T.I. + Pharrell, holds at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the eighth week. It sold 340K copies this week. Will it also hold at #1 for the seventh week on the Hot 100? Here’s the low-down on this week’s top 10 albums.

The Top Five: Jay Z’s Magna Carta…Holy Grail holds at #1 for the second week (129K)…Sara Bareilles’ Blessed Unrest debuts at #2 (68K). It’s her third top 10 album…Kidz Bop Kids’ Kidz Bop 24 debuts at #3 (62K). This is the 17th volume in this series to reach the top 10…Ace Hood’s Trials & Tribulations debuts at #4 (34K). It’s his second top 10 album… Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Good Times dips from #4 to #5 in its 33rd week (31K). This is its eighth week in the top 10.

The Second Five: Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions dips from #5 to #6 its 46th week (28K). This is its 15th week in the top 10…J. Cole’s Born Sinner drops from #3 to #7 in its fifth week (27K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… The Teen Beach Movie soundtrack debuts at #8 (25K)…Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience rebounds from #13 to #9 in its 18th week (24K). This is its 15th week in the top 10…Cody Simpson’s Surfer’s Paradise debuts at #10 (24K). It’s his first top 10 album.

As noted above, Kanye West’s Yeezus drops from #6 to #18. Five other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Ciara’s Ciara drops from #2 to #20. Wale’s The Gifted drops from #7 to #15. Skylar Grey’s Don’t Look Down plummets from #8 to #69. Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories drops from #9 to #14. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist drops from #10 to #12.

Matt Nathanson’s eighth studio album, Last Of The Great Pretenders, debuts at #16. It’s his second top 20 album in a row. Modern Love hit #17 in 2011. (Oddly, the Pretenders had a hit album in 1994 titled Last Of The Independents.)…Sick Puppies’ third U.S. album, Connect, debuts at #17. It’s their first top 30 album.

Pitch Perfect drops from #12 to #19 in its 39th week. It’s the highest-ranking soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie for the 21st week. Anna Kendrick’s sleeper hit “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” has ranked #10 on the Hot 100 the last two weeks.

Pet Shop Boys’ Electric debuts at #26. It’s the veteran pop/dance duo’s 12th studio album. All have had one-word titles. (Two had one-syllable titles: Please and Yes.)

Ronald Isley’s This Song Is For You debuts at #27. It’s the highest-charting of his three solo albums. Here I Am (a collabo with Burt Bacharach) reached #73. Mr. I hit #50. The Isley Brothers first charted in September 1962 with Twist & Shout. The title song became a #2 hit for the Beatles in April 1964. The Isleys first cracked the top 30 in May 1969 with It’s Our Thing. That album contained the #2 hit “It’s Your Thing.”

Bob Marley & the Wailers’ 1984 compilation Legend drops from #33 to #57 its 277th week on the chart. Legend holds at #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the fourth straight week. This marks the first time it has been #1 for four or more weeks in a row since 2004. This is its 118th week on top of that chart (in the Nielsen SoundScan era). The album has sold 11,374,000 copies since January 1991, which makes it the #9 best-seller of the Nielsen SoundScan era. CDs account for 77% of that total. Cassettes account for 16%, digital sales for 6%. Vinyl accounts for less than 1%.

Mindless Behavior’s Mindless Behavior: All Around The World holds at #1 on Top Music Videos for the second week.

Coming Attractions: Selena Gomez’s solo debut album Stars Dance is expected to be next week’s top new entry. Also due: the multi-artist Rich Gang compilation, an eponymous album by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Marc Anthony’s 3.0, We Came As Romans’ Tracing Back Roots, the Rolling Stones’ iTunes exclusive Hyde Park Live and the Smurfs 2 soundtrack.

Chart Moves: Pet Shop Boys Score Highest Charting Album In Nearly 20 Years

This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Jay Z held at No. 1 for a second week as "Magna Carta… Holy Grail" sold another 129,000 copies (down 76%). He easily barred the arriving Sara Bareilles from a second No. 1 album as her "The Blessed Unrest" started at No. 2 with 68,000.

Outside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 there were a number of movers and shakers, as usual. Let's take a look at some of them…

-- Pet Shop Boys, "Electric" (No. 26): The veteran pop/dance duo returns with its 17th charting set, "Electric," debuting at No. 26. It's their highest-ranking effort in nearly 20 years. The pair went higher with 1993's "Very," which debuted and peaked at No. 20 on the Oct. 23, 1993, chart. Only three Pet Shop Boys albums have charted higher than "Electric": "Very," 1987's "Actually" (No. 25) and 1986's "Please" (No. 7).

In other good news, "Electric's" debut sales week (11,000) surpasses the first-week bow of its last release, 2012's "Elysium" (7,000).

"Electric" is the act's first independently released album and was issued through its own x2 label via Kobalt Label Services. In the United States, Pet Shop Boys had previously released albums through an array of different labels, including EMI, Atlantic, Parlophone/London-Sire, Sanctuary, Rhino and Astralwerks.

“Electric” was produced by Stuart Price and has also spun off the hit single "Vocal." The track rises 31-25 on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart this week and is Pet Shop Boys' 37th Dance hit.

-- P!nk, "The Truth About Love" (No. 24): As the album spends its 44th (consecutive!) week in the top 40 on the Billboard 200, it ties 2008’s "Funhouse" for P!nk's second-longest run in the top 40. Only her second album, "M!ssundaztood," spent a longer time in the region: 64 weeks in 2001-03.

This week, "The Truth About Love" is pushed back 22-24 with 12,000 sold -- despite a 12% sales gain.

-- Court Yard Hounds, "Amelita" (No. 70): The second album by the duo -- Dixie Chicks' Martie Maguire and Emily Robison -- starts with far less (5,000) than its first release: the duo’s self-titled 2010 debut launched at No. 7 with 61,000. All three Chicks have charted this year, following singer Natalie Maines' arrival with her solo debut Mother (No. 17, May 25).

-- Jason Isbell, "Southeastern" (No. 80): After an interview on NPR's "Fresh Air" (July 17), the album jets back onto the list at No. 80 with a 126% gain. The profile was repeated as part of the "Fresh Air Weekend" program on July 20.

-- Various Artists, "Melo O Hawaii: Songs of Hawaii" (No. 84): Starbucks' restocking of this 2011 compilation prompts its best sales week (4,000, up from essentially no units the previous week) since the week ending April 3, 2011. Perhaps unsurprisingly, more total copies of the album have been sold in Honolulu (7,000) than in any other U.S. city.

-- Phil Collins, "Hits" (No. 146): The singer's only greatest hits album (barring a ballads collection) was released in 1998 and has proven to be a remarkably consistent seller. Of its 772 weeks on sale, it has fallen below 1,000 in weekly sales only 28 times. Of its 3.5 million total sales, 60,000 have been logged this year.

This week, "Hits" rises from No. 181 to No. 146, marking its 111th week on the chart.

There were reports about the lowest sales week in August 2010, but I came across something a month later (Sept. 25, 2010 chart) that reported 4.8 million (rounded total), and it being the lowest weekly sales sum.

Blake Shelton Nets First Million-Selling Album

This week, Blake Shelton's "Red River Blue" becomes his first million-selling album.

The country singer's set, which re-enters the Billboard 200 chart at No. 194 with a little more than 2,000 sold for the week (up 12%), according to Nielsen SoundScan, just creeps past the 1 million mark. The July 2011 release became his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200, when it debuted at the top slot.

"Red River Blue" spawned four hit singles on the Country Airplay chart, all of which reached No. 1: "Honey Bee," "God Gave Me You," "Drink on It" and "Over."

In other good news for Shelton, his current album, "Based on a True Story," is his fastest-selling release yet. In its 17 chart weeks, it has sold 763,000 copies. Comparatively, "Red River Blue," his last studio set, moved just 381,000 in its first 17 weeks.
